Wondering if a traditional sauna is better than an infrared sauna? The Finnish tradition of having a hot rock sauna of over 170 - 200F degrees and the many research studies on PubMed proving the health benefits of sauna, can now be matched with an infrared sauna hybrid. This video goes over how you can add a traditional sauna heater to any infrared sauna (or any type of sauna for that matter) for just a few hundred dollars. If high heat is important to you, you can now have it quickly and easily in any sauna configuration you want.

Quick question. I just ordered the two seater from Matt Wise over at radiant health. He said this would not work due to the sauna shutting off based on going above the thermometer reading? I think I wrote that right. He basically said the sauna cuts off, so using a secondary heating source that exceeds the set temp it should be getting would seasonally override it and shut it off. But I’m pretty sure you stayed here you could run both simultaneously? Please share your thoughts if you find time. Regards

Swedish sauna never fixed my chronic shoulder pain. Far infa red healed it in two sessions. The more I used it the better it feels, today my shoulder doesn’t even click and is flexible and doesn’t hurt at all. I find it really helps my bones as I’m older now. I also find it’s easier to breathe in it as well.

I just installed a 3KW traditional sauna heater in my 2 person IR sauna. Running it off a separate 240V 16 amp circuit (Australia). Very quick at heating up and great results. I haven't tried to run both at same time yet. Thanks for your content.

"I recently installed the Vevor 6kw 240v heater in my two-person infrared sauna. Before the installation, my sauna would only reach a temperature of 130F after an hour. But now, with the new heater, it only takes around 30 minutes for the temperature to go from 60F to 170F, with the highest temperature recorded so far being 201F. I have also splashed water on the rocks without any issues with the radio, lights, or other sauna components. It is important to ensure that the heater and vents have the correct clearances. I extended one side of my sauna by three feet to have more room. Currently, I am working on my own Saunum AirSolo in a DIY style."

Having owned both, the wet sauna experience is far better than the infrared system. The feeling of warm steam on the body is amazing. I now have a gas fired unit and love. True not as flexible as infrared and I don't care which is technically better but I love the wet version. Each to their own...

I’ve been using the RadiantHealth 2H for about a month now. First 2-4 sessions, it took me 10-14 minutes to start sweating, so I was questioning my choice of saunas! Now my sweat starts going strong around 6-8 minutes. Rolling sweat around 12 minutes. Takeaway here is that my body has had to adapt to the stimulus and now responds rather quickly! I’ve added a 250w Therabulb and the heat factor has multiplied!! In addition, I enjoy a light workout/stretch session as it is warming up. My views on traditional saunas have changed. Infrared has been amazing and I think both types of sauna have a place in the healing realm!!

Excellent observation! Yes first becoming acclimated to sweating, then heat acclimation itself. I have more videos we recorded on this… major point is people think in traditional sauna the heat suffering they go through when pouring water on the rock is an intense sweat… but not really. Some of it is an accumulation of humidity being created, with infrared, every single drop in that sauna came from you. It’s just the mechanics of radiant heat vs heating the air really. I too share your experience, and keep going back to infrared even after having both. Yes the bulbs are awesome to shorten preheat time too don’t you think!?

Yes to infrared... there is a reason a sports PT will use infrared to treat tissue damage. It's been around for a long time and works. I am very intrigued by the hybrid approach. I like the traditional sauna with moisture but also want the benefit of the deeper tissue heating affect. I stumbled on this channel doing research to build an indoor sauna. I also own a construction company. We recently completed custom sauna installs in several large residence remodels. Thanks for the insightful information.

I like the idea of a hybrid. I had an IR first. It maxed out about 135, I would sweat but it had no effect on my BP or anything. That one kept burning up its control unit so I bought a traditional 4 person with 6k or 9k heater (I forget) but within two weeks my BP was averaging down 20 points. It regularly runs about 210 after 30 minutes. I rarely pour water on the rocks. I think lining the walls with IR panels may be easier with a traditional but obviously more expensive

Traditional sauna is great if you have space dedicated for it and its good to do for 1 time a week. Infrared sauna you can do more often and you can setup it up in your garage. Also what you can do with traditional sauna is get some rocks and a container where you can heat up those rocks then place heavy duty tent over those rucks but make sure you putout fire and coals :) so use both :)

I have a question, I have an infrared sauna currently, used to have steam ones in a couple other houses before and realized that's what I prefer. I want to get a steam one again and I was wondering about adding a heater like you did, conveniently my sauna is literally next to my electrical panel. I assume running it with just heat would be fine but if I wanted to ladle water over the rocks and add steam into the equation, would it damage the infrared panels and the control panel inside? If it could work that would be amazing and I would not have to buy or build another sauna.

I don't know how the algorithm works, but I've just got a 4 person health mate IR sauna that I'm planning to install a 3kw heater into and your video popped up. Currently the sauna temp tops out at 50deg C, but i do get a good sweat on after 20-30 minutes. Really hoping to get a real sauna experience and not damage the cabin in the process. Hybrid seems a really attractive option, but i did have to run a couple of 20A lines to have both operational simultaneously. I'm wary of overriding safety temp cut outs though

As a Finnish person I thought I'd mention something. I appreciate your hands on approach and experimentation but to me a Finnish sauna is NOT primarily a steam sauna. It's up to the individual to decide how much steam they want to use. Some people in Finland think you shouldn't use steam at all and only use drea heat from the stove. Most people use the steam tho so I get it but I think steam saunas are a totally different thing as in Roman or "Turkish" saunas. What makes a Finnish sauna is the ability to ADJUST the moisture aka steam but also run it totally dry whereas "steam saunas," can't do that. Another thing is I actually prefer fire and wood heated saunas which are a lot more traditional but I also think they are just better. It's hard to explain how but you should just try it and see it for yourself. Thanks for the video. 🙂👍

Yeah, so I have been wanting to build a hybrid sauna for a long time so that my clients, and myself could get the benefits from both styles of heat. However, I cannot find anywhere an infrared sauna that doesn't turn off the panels at temps above 150F. So when the external heater kicks on and gets the sauna up to 151F, the panels are no longer running and thus the sauna is not functioning as a hybrid, it is only a traditional at that point. Maybe the sensor should be removed or modified? Put in a cup of cold water? Ideas?

What they have in common is that they are all the same size, same material and tourmaline stones in the panels. - The first option differs in that it has mica panels, an EMF of 0 mgs and heats up to 75 degrees. (therasage/firzone brand) The second option has mica panels, an EMF of 3-5 mgs and heats up to 75 degrees. Traditional saunas produce as much if not more IR radiation than IR saunas alone; the stove (~500 degrees), the structure (~150 degrees), and the air (150-200 degrees) all emit IR radiation in spectrums from at least 1 to 100 um all at higher power levels and more directions than anything you can generate with less than a 4KW emitters/heaters. So traditional sauna's are already IR saunas. You do you, but it is pretty obvious a tiny wood, glue, and plastic box inside your house is a different thing than a traditional sauna. I know not everyone can access a traditional sauna all the time but if you have been in one then you know the difference. It is way more than the temperature or the type/amount of radiation. The real problem with modern sauna's is they suffer from the side affects of capitalism (not saying it is always a bad thing). You don't have to feel the wood, fit it, smell it, drip your blood and sweat and time into it. No one is sitting around using their Mom's sauna blanket. The cheap IR saunas are disposable and poorly thought out to make money, not make the user want to keep it forever. You don't have to work for it. A real sauna is one you have earned. If all you have is a sauna blanket and that makes you feel good, that is really all that matters, but there is no reason to argue that is the same as a traditional sauna.
@john99776
@john99776 7 ай бұрын
I think you're right about traditional saunas producing infrared like IR saunas. This is something that's left out of the conversation most of the time. The reason that I'm happy with my IR sauna is that it replicates the helpful infrared WITHOUT the unnecessary bulky construction, high energy consumption, hot air discomfort and skin and lung irritation of a traditional sauna. OF COURSE traditional saunas are tried and proven for their benefits - before the advent of IR heaters they were the only game in town. But the reason that they worked was the beneficial infrared that's emitted by any heater. Sitting around a campfire warms by infrared, too - not by heating the air in the wilderness. If someone wants to sit in high heat, that's their business, but there's no reason to think that high air temperature is necessary for the health benefits attributable to sauna use. Now that we have a way to generate infrared without a lot of waste and discomfort, I'm happy to use an IR sauna.

Sauna Rooms are inferior to an Infrared Sauna Blanket. The reason why an Infrared Sauna Blanket is Superior to any Sauna room is because you get the best possible Infrared Ray treatment. Infrared Rays are extremely Healthy for your body. With an Infrared Sauna Blanket you get 360 degrees of Infrared Rays Penetrating your body an inch and a half deep. This is extremely healthy. It is unhealthy to have the temperature above 160 degrees when using an Infrared Sauna Blanket. I guess you need 200 degrees for an Infrared Sauna Room because the Infrared Sauna Rays are further away from your body than in an Infrared Sauna Blanket. In the Blanket the Rays are laying against what you are wearing. I wear a Sauna Suit, it is an extremely thin and breathable Nylon material, inside my Infrared Sauna Blanket.
