Just ordered that SO.4 microphone! I'll do a part 2 as soon as it arrives :)

I was about to subscribe to not miss that, and I noticed I'm already subscribed. Now I'm very confused and kinda disappointed that I couldn't sub. Maybe I'll unsub so I can resub...

This is awesome! I generally will layer additional recordings to fill in that frequency gap when pitching. I can see how recording with an ultrasonic mic can speed up workflow and give a more natural sound compared to adding the frequencies artificially.

Very curious about those cheaper alternatives! Seems like a great way to speed up the workflow

ohh boy, the crispiness of the second mic pitched 2 octaves down sounds so good! Thanks for sharing!

It's crazy how a lame scream can sound so good just pitched two octaves down with this mic!

I'd love to see how those cheaper mics sound. I'm interested in recording rats communicating with each other and pitching it down since they pretty much only communicate in the ultrasonic and humans can't hear them.

What a cool idea! That mic should be here soon!

I was watching your other video when I got notification about a new one lol I'll use that opportunity to say a big thanks for all you do for the community, you're amazing! I was shocked when I discovered your contend, because I've a big fan of HLD since 2017, when I didn't even know I'll be working as a sound designer. And I loved the sounds of that game even then! So, very surprising to discover that sound designer of one of your favorite games makes such videos haha By the way, you look a bit tired in this vid, hope you remember to get enough rest :D

so much good in here, man! loooooove the funky font choice; the graphics illustrating squashing down the total audio frequencies and their relationship to audio human hearing was just 😚👌a'suh'gooooood! videos like this that setup a problem/situation/curiosity and then immediately give results in the A/B fashion: invaluable Deeeeeefinitely into seeing a Pt2 (Feat. SO.4)! That price alone for ultrasonic capabilities is maaad. And definitely +1 to free sounds in the newsletter you sweet, sweet generous cinnamon dost crunch 🦃🤙

Far as cheaper mics go, LOM’s Usi and similar models have very nice high frequency response. Admittedly not as high as the Sanken but there’s plenty of highs (even though I have windbubbles permanently attached to mine).

This is my first time hearing about the SO.4 so I'm pretty intrigued about the follow-up on that! My go-to ultrasonic mic on a budget has been the Clippy Ultra XLR, got myself a stereo pair and is absolutely incredible for recording crazy sound sources. The only caveat from my experience is the sensitivity is on the higher scale (some sounds with high transient spikes like banging chains together can clip the mic recording regardless of gain at times). But apart from that, I've been having so much fun recording everything around my house and anywhere I go with it!
@felix_sfx_felixАй бұрын
Could recording at 32 bit float avoid this clipping?

I have a Sanken and I found out that indeed zoom recorders have a high cut at the end of the spectrum beginning at 70kHz, but using my sound devices mixpre mk2 showed that it goes up to 96Khz without that high cut. Few articles mention that small difference (none as my search goes)... but for sound design at this level it is good to know that.
@AkashThakkarAudioКүн бұрын
Good to know the Mixpre2 doesn't have that cut!

I have been using the SO.4s for a lot of recordings over the past 2 years, and although i haven't tried the Sanken myself, i can safely say they sound really nice. I don't think they go as high as the Sanken would, but for the price it's a not brainer. Only problem is they are omni, and sometimes (for close range foley, especially in environments where the accoustic cannot be controled) it's not very convenient.

The "Sennheiser MKH 8020" or the "Earthworks M50" are also quite good. The noisefloor is a different issue, though.

@FlamboyantJeeringАй бұрын
Ohhhh a tough question, but a fair one
@gustavsoundАй бұрын
Cool! But isn't the better quality from pitched down material due to more samples in the hearable content, rather than frequencies above the human hearing actually being recorded? For this you would need to set the AAF on your ADC to where the nyquist frequency is - but maybe you can do that on a Zoom H4 ? Curious to know if you can! please let me know !
@AkashThakkarAudioАй бұрын
Great question! First, no, can't do it on an H4 alas! At least not the current ones! There are still the same number of samples in the audible content across both mics, considering they're both recorded at 192KHZ! I'll try and make that more clear visually in Part 2 inside of iZotope to make easier to parse!
@gustavsoundАй бұрын
@@AkashThakkarAudio Oh yeah sorry I meant the F3 you're using here, not h4. :) If there's a fixed analog aaf somewhere before the ad conversion maybe the crispy sounds are in fact other things I assume. In the process of getting to the bottom of how these devices are configured atm :) happy to continue the discussion elsewhere if you'd like. peace!
