Well. Considering most diesel golfs that have basic mods can smoke like this or considered to have an issue you wouldnt expect it to have 350bhp when theyd never make that out of the factory so yeah I'd say a sleeper.

I know plenty of people with 120-140bhp MK5 Jettas, Golfs, Leons & 306 TDIs that smoke like fuck due to a reek map. Smoke doesn't mean it's got power.. It's easily achieved by any bell end who wants to dump unburnt diesel into their exhaust regardless of power level.

The weight is a killer on these cars though, I was surprised at the mid 5s for 0-60 for all that power. Mines only got like 150hp/250ft pounds but it's in a car that weighs close to half of a Mk4. Years back I built a mechanical TDI and it did about the same in the 0-60 ,with a traction-less 14 flat in the 1/4 at 100mph. It was in a mk1,which saves like 1000 pounds on a mk4 right off the bat. Definitely take the Mk4 for comfort and long drives over a mk1 though.

It's easy to exaggerate figures when you're building cars. I thought I was at least £12k into my MK2 Golf Resto-Mod with a fully built 1.8t hybrid turbo. Because I went piece by piece each time I bought something I felt like it was costing so much when in reality it was less than £100 per week. Reminding myself of all the times buying parts breaking my heart led me to believe I was well over the 10k mark.. But when I took the time and tallied up every expense and reciept that I had written down on my notepad, I was surprised to find that I barely spent 6k on the entire thing.

Had a 2001 Jetta TDI (ALH engine code, which was predecessor to the PD). I completely rebuilt it. - VNT 17/26 Kerma Turbo - Stage 2 Cam - DLC Race 520 injectors - PD150 intake - 11mm Injection Pump - Lift pump in the tank - PD150 Race Pipe on intake - PD150 pistons and rods - Lightened the Crank - 3bar map sensor - Tacotaco side mount intercooler - Custom stainless intake piping - 3" turbo back exhaust with resonator and no muffler - VW O2M 6speed transmission - 20lbs Spec single mass flywheel and 6puck race clutch - Custom Rocketchip tune by JSRMonster In the end, I was making about 236HP and 460ft/Torque at the wheels... Would light up the tires in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, then chirp 4th..... (did have problem with head Lift though LOL)

andrew wright - Yeah it sounds interesting I would love too see it how it unfolds tho. I think the diesels torque will jump the petrol and then the longer revs at the top end will claw back 🤔
