I used a pair of these professionally for some big name clients for years when they first came out. Loved them. The touch screen works great in the menus too. We phased them out when we finally jumped to 4k with the A7Rii when it had just come out but kept our FS-100's for a few more years. Now, Ive got several modern cameras but wanted a simple 1080 cam for podcasting. Something I could leave set up in a studio and that doesn't have a record limit. I picked one of these FS-100's up last summer (2023) for $300! It works great and honestly, I like the retro cinema camera look and the image quality, its not perfect but it has character. Would also consider using for live events with the right lens. When shooting interviews, I would stack them with a 50mm on one, and an 85mm on the other. Wide and tight with correct eyeline, even with a teleprompter. A neat workaround in the 1080 days before 4k changed the need for that. Id say if you can get one cheap, try it, if its not for you, sell it.

I had this camera for years. And my advice DON'T EVEN TRY TO BUY IT in 2024. It's terrible by today's standart. Colors are awful, it's impossible to tweak it right. Codec is terrible, huge blochiness in going on the moving objects, posterising, not enough color info. Bad dynamic range, messy shadows, no highlight roll-off. And there is very weird banding on a contrasty vertical lines. The only good thing in it is a preamps.

Dang. Memory lane right here. Shot on these in high school. This was the year our high school got a huge money grant for the first time in like 20 years and our film teacher bought 2 FS100’s, an FS700, Zeiss CP.2’s, a RED Scarlett, and a RED Epic Mysterium-X. Loved these things and shot on them all the time, I remember the color being kind of washed out but we didn’t really have any concept of color grading back then. We shot some weddings, motocross, off road racing with these things, I remember them having some weird banding in low light.

I can't speak for the budget of the other two films, but Kon-Tiki was one of the most expensive Norwegian feature films ever made at the time. I've been a photographer since 2016 and started doing some video stuff for clients in 2020. Then my business turned full into video instead of photos, the thing is, I just bought my first camera for video (XH2S because I love Fujifilm), and all this time I did videos with my Fuji X-T20 which only have 4k, 30 fps, 8 bit, no log, no raw, nothing. And believe me, I'm super picky with the final quality but I tried always to get 100% from my gear. The thing is we usually think we need the best camera out there, 4k 120 fps, raw, or 6.2k open gate blah blah blah, and the truth is with today's softwares (specially Davinci) we can have the full potential from our gear. This is what I got from this video; yes lenses are important, cameras, all your gear but we need to realize that we can get the full potential of things and could be better than what we imagine.

Did you know that Phillip Bloom was brought in to help design this camera? The inspiration for the design for based on the DSLR boom at the time. Videographers main input was they wanted a camera that had the advantages of a DSLR type body, but sorta blend it with a cinema camera with all the controls on the body. And BTW I still have my FS100, although it is finally giving up the ghost so I did have to retire it to my collector shelf.

I shot a feature “Things I Do for Money” and dozens of short films and music videos on the FS700 recording raw to the Odyssey 7Q. Incredible set up and still is. You could do raw 4K up to 120fps and 2K 240fps. And even do 480 and 960 fps internal but it looked pretty trash. But it was still 480 and 960 fps! I ended up upgrading to a decade-old Red Epic Dragon 6K. I have a thing for older cameras that just work so well.

Hi Zach, Love your segment about older cinema cameras, please don‘t stop.🙃 Just wanted to say that „Kon Tiki“ was not shot on the fs100. It was shot mainly on the Alexa Plus and the Red One MX, only some plates and 2nd unit shots were done on the fs100 and also you missed out mentioning that the camera you used is not the complete design. It‘s missing the side and top handle, which makes it pretts ergonomic. Keep creative mate.👋🏻

The people who insist that you can't get anything spectacular out of this camera are the same kind of gearheads who dismissed the stunning evidence of Kendy Ty's early short films, made with a primeval Canon T2i and one lens. It's not the camera, it's the cameraman. Finding the sweet spot of a given camera, lens or sensor takes patience, time and careful exploration. Throw your charts away. There are sub-$200 mirrorless cameras that can produce cinematic beauty beyond even what's in this video when paired with vintage lenses, ND's, careful exposure and patience. And that's without even hacking them to shoot RAW. BE BRAVE, mffkrs!!!

The only reason you would wanna use it is because of its actually really great mic preamps and battery life (one huge npf can literaly last a day). In fact, still using it for cheap streaming of conferences and stuff like that, where u need something robust and reliable more than something pretty. Something similar in format/price but waaay better is the fs700 (if you have an atomos): the 4k raw out of that is incredibly good for a camera so old: crazy sharp, deep colors and plenty of dynamic range.

The FS100 will solve that. both cameras will make a great A/B duo... only problem its is just HD. Having more than HD its great for youtube as it allows to punch in your footage. so maybe using an AI upscaler? will it be too time consuming? will it match the non upscaled footage?
