Time and memory.
Perhaps, the two most fundamental aspects of human existence.
While it is very important to avoid generalising about the longest continual
culture on the face of the Earth, over 50,000 years old, time and memory
take on very unique dimensions in spirituality of the First Nations People of
Australia.

Before Europeans arrived in Australia, the population of First Australians
was split into 250 individual nations, many of which were in alliance with
one another, and within each nation there existed separate, often related
clans, from as few as 5 or 6 to as many as 30 or 40.
Each nation had its
own language, and a few had several.
At the heart of any First Australians conception of time is The Dreamtime,
often translated in just two of the 250 plus First Nations languages as
Tjukurrpa or Alcheringa.
Among the many diverse Australian First Nations there is a shared
understanding of time and space as being intricately interwoven with the
Dreamtime.
The Dreamtime: A Time Beyond Time
In the Western worldview, time is mostly perceived as linear, marked by
past, present, and future.
However, within Australian First Nations cultures, time takes on a
fundamentally different character.

I'd like to suggest that you do a playlist for aboriginal australian related vids. cos thats what i wanted to find after watching this video! My art teacher introduced me to the concept of dreamtime. It was very badly described unsurprisingly XD Im still struggling a lil bit to wrap my head around, but it helps i recently watched a science time doc which described time as a river, the past exists at the sametime as now, our great-great-great grandparents exist. Its just they are in a different place we cannot access with current tech. The river o time carries us forwards, we visibly change and call it ageing. My old idea of dreamtime was that it was in the past, solidly and of a time of myth and legend, thus vague as dreams often are. I did consider several times in my adult years that the dreamtime could refer to a sort of 'pre-consciousness' when we were more inter-connected with nature, before we divorced ourselves off from it. I think we've done this several times, not just with the advent of agriculture, but say with cooking our food, making tools.

I'm a 74 year old retired science/mathematics teacher. When I did my teacher training at Queensland University, Australia we had a lecture from two Aboriginal elders (aunties) about the aboriginals in Australia. At the end of the lecture I was embarrassed to be a white person. Also the history I was taught at school in the 1950's and 1960's, regarding Aboriginals, was absolute rubbish. The knowledge we've lost through disrespect of Aboriginal culture is tragic. Sir David Attenborough did research on an Aboriginal dreamtime story and compared it to scientific knowledge and it matched perfectly. More studies like this should be done! Our Australian Aboriginals are, not only our national treacures, but treasures for the world.

I live in Australia and I’ve never heard this simple explanation of the aboriginal concept of time, though there are plenty of Dreamtime stories about how this or that came into existence which sound much like fairytales. Thank you so very much for this easy to understand explanation of time, it helps me to better understand this beautiful, disenfranchised people and encourages me to want to know them better!! It's true from Ramana Maharishi's point of being. Going by his testimonial will serve as a good anti-anxiety pill for a spiritual seeker trying to figure out existence. Listening to his words will not make one enligtened. Unless all questions and doubts about one's existence drops off one is bound to suffering. As existence is a live phenomenon and all knowledge is always of the past, no matter if they are profound or non sensical. To be completely aware of the ongoing live phenomenon is enlightenment and no matter what words of wisdom one may hear, unless one dwells into existence nothing is bound to alter.

I have to speak up as an old guy full of book learning as well as life experience. We humans have been granted a great privilege, but that comes with great responsibility. When humans, not Europeans, arrived in North America,South America and Australia,a whole lot of species went extinct. We have a horrible knack for setting Nature out of balance. I believe that every species has Intrinsic Worth We just plain have to do better with our responsibilities to ourselves and our fellow creatures.

Deeply fascinating. This makes my own research even more clear; delving into creation, instantaneity, persistence and time which overlaps one's concept of Responsibility. In the spiritual realm, it seems that the perfections were extruded through a template which added a rainbow of imperfections. * Unconditional Love (which brings us together) was extruded to become space (which separates us). * Perfect Responsibility (which addresses the "instant" of creation and the ontological relationship of spirit with that creation), was extruded to become time (which forsakes our connection to a creation through the dimension of Darkness). * Utter Humility (which does not "demand" but "allows") was extruded to become energy (which boasts the force to make things happen; E=mc^2, money, hubris). * Fearless Confidence (which is the basis of Cause-and-Free Will) was extruded to become mass (which traps "self" in deterministic Cause-and-Effect). When someone experiences a *_traumatic_* event, they tend to withdraw *_awareness_* from the visible (Light) making it invisible (Darkness). And this is *_not_* electromagnetic radiation, though that can be a useful analogy. By this, an individual creates anti-Responsibility which is like the individual has put creation on automatic; a useful analogy to this being the phenomenon of *_intertia._* When an individual reclaims *_Responsibility_* for the trauma, this removes the apparent time element from that "instant" of creation, setting the person free, as Christ once described it. Another way the Dreamtime perspective overlaps my own research involves the Relativistic aspect of velocity, energy and time. According to Einstein, when something approaches the velocity of light (in a vacuum), time slows down. A mass will require an infinite amount of energy to reach that velocity without protection, but light itself already travels at this velocity, and begs the question: Does light actually travel? If there is zero time from the perspective of light, it is at both the source and the destination at the same instant. But because our "selves" have been extruded into imperfection (dichotomous, action-reaction ego), we sense the time it takes for light to travel from source to destination. In the Judaeo-Christian Bible, Genesis 1.3, God said, Let there be light, but again, this is not electromagnetic radiation, but simple, spiritual awareness. It seems from the perspective of spirit, all of Genesis 1 was outside of time, and God "resting" is what added the time dimension. And the instantiation (perception) of time was the *_First Trauma._* Very interesting, indeed. 😎♥✝🇺🇸💯 REFERENCES: *_The Logical Christian_* (hardcover) *_Trinity Treason: How the church betrayed its flock with the only unforgivable sin_* (hardcover, paperback, ebook) *_The Bible's Hidden Wisdom: God's Reason for Noah's Flood_* (hardcover, paperback, ebook) *_Meaning and Context: Creation_* (hardcover, paperback, ebook) *_Enemies of Christ_* (hardcover, paperback, ebook) *_The Science of Miracles_* (hardcover, paperback, ebook) *_Four Elements of God_* (hardcover, paperback, ebook) *_Proof of God_* (hardcover, paperback, ebook) *_The Art of Forgiveness_* (hardcover, paperback, ebook) *_Dumb Genius: How intelligence is sometimes its own worst enemy_* (hardcover, paperback, ebook)

I always found it interesting how as you go down the size scale, time speeds up. And if you go up the size scale, time slows down. But at the same time, the smallest and largest scales loop back to the speed of light and beyond. It seems to me like proof that all time scales exist within the infinite possibilities here and now, all playing out at the speed of light. Ultimately, nothing ever got created. Everything was, is, and will always be unfolding now. I can’t find the point in which the infinite first manifested something, but it seems like there is no point in time that time got created. I could just sit in the infinite here now forever.

Non-existence cannot exist. Even if non-existence DOES exist, it doesn’t. I’ve been intrigued for years by the time/size correlation as well! @@lmclrain Time only exists in the mind and spirit of the physical body, the mind and spirit is separate from the flesh. The mind and spirit did make up said Time that we call the 24 hrs in a day and clocks to read the time, but without the life of the flesh, time really doesn’t exist, it’s just the present, or the “I AM”. While the mind is the universe, and the spirit represents the individual, as the physical body dies we are given back to the universe in pure consciousness. Our energy becomes one with the rest of the universe where anything is possible. Remember we are just passing through, now some would say living in the reality of this world 🌎 is heaven, some would call it hell, when it’s really both, the bible does mention a war in the heavens and angels and demons were both cast out, that’s the best description of reality, of what we see on this plane of existence, for what ever reason we die in the realm of existence it would clearly represent being cast out of heaven, just so the spirit can learn how to better serve itself and know that they can make changes in their lives. The 2 sides to life, one is the subconscious or reality, and the other is pure consciousness, and there is the unconscious mind. We live our lives not knowing, but we operate off of 95 % of our subconscious minds, the rest is the unconscious, and after the death happens we turn into the consciousness.

Thank you for sharing this "timely" information. 🙂 Ancient wisdom is a gift that in the near future will come to be valued and recognized by a greater portion of our world for its roots in the truth about our reality. I've always felt time is a personal experience, fluid in its expression and yet a foundational platform for all who agreed to experience the construct. It is a created design/playground for consciousness. I really liked the way the Aboriginal people called out the whole "mindfulness movement" to look at The Now from a different perspective. No disrespect, and all spiritual paths have their waystations, mindfulness practice being one of them, and there is value in that stage, but there is a deeper relationship with Creation and embracing the Infinite Now of Being by simply loving "being" is the next step.

As a Buddhist practitioner I completely agree with you on the limitations of mindfulness. Mindfulness training do contribute to the insight practice and is extensively used on the Buddhist path. However, also a mindful fixation can become a major hindrance when we move on into more subtle stages along the path. To be fair, the moment of “now” is never to be understood as something truly existent for a Buddhist practitioner. The notion of time evaporates when the mind is able to rest effortlessly in the present moment without formulation of any concepts of any kind. Just pure awareness. Which ironically is called “ordinary mind or knowing” in the Buddhist Mahamudra tradition. It is called ordinary because it is what is left when all conceptualisations and the even most subtle types of clinging have evaporated. The reason the Buddha didn’t answer the question on how the world was created is because he had completely transcended all concepts such as time and creation and silence is the most profound answer to that question. In the Buddhist tradition this is what awakening means. It is the irreversible state of complete understanding of reality. Which is a state utterly free of any elaborations and conceptualisations. When the mind has arrived at the stage of no longer finding answers and all fixations have lost its grip on the mind it has then arrived on the brink of the real truth. Mindfulness practice is just one among many tools with which the effortless state of non-abiding wakefulness is accomplished. If it leads to an increased ability for focus and openness without clinging mindfulness training is a very useful tool in the toolbox.

Listening to that bit near the end, how Australia’s first peoples were encyclopedias of natural knowledge… Then thinking of humanity’s future (or one possible future), in which we venture out among the stars to roam, explore, colonize, etc… I wonder how possible it is, that man could survive once having separated himself from nature. I mean, most things we need can be “synthesized” once we understand it… but we are killing nature off, faster than we are managing to understand it. We are not even close to understanding nature. How can we ever be so arrogant as to assume that we would “pack” enough of it, to take with us “off world” when we do go out to explore the cosmos?

In Buddhism "nowness" is also referred to as the "fourth moment". No wonder the guy knows the concept if he studied Buddhism. Frankly I haven't seen it as clearly presented anywhere else. It is a primary concept in Buddhism very much related to the notion of suchness. Everybody experiences it but so far i've seen openly, logically, and clearly discussed in Buddhist philosophy. And these concepts apply to all of us as experiencers of reality. That understanding probably arose with self-awareness.

Stop lying. We are not Africans. We are the indigenous people of the world. The Americas are the oldest civilizations on the planet because agriculture started here along with monumental architecture. The idea that socalled nonblack people are qualified to speak on human origins is laughable when we consider the fact that they are not human and have only been on the planet for six to ten thousand years according to science and our records. I am fascinated by the fact that inorganic beings feel qualified to tell us who we are, and when we are, and where we come from. Human origins have nothing to do with anyone else but Black people. We are the only indigenous people on the planet despite what our enemies say. I'm white and I say so is a demonic savage pathology. If socalled nonblack people were sincere in their pursuit of ultimate truth, they would ask the very people who were brought into being by Divine Cosmic forces. We built pyramids as a way to say to others, if you can't equal or surpass our genius, please be silent and learn. So-called nonblack people have no history or heritage of inventing civilization and culture on their own. Their history is not about higher consciousness but lies, cannibalism, psychopathic entitlement, and death. This is why our planet is doing everything possible to restore the right balance to OUR planet by restricting the birth rate of the enemies of Nature, herselg. Do you really think Mother Nature forgot about slavery, lynching, and the destruction of Her children? The birth rate tells us She is not going to allow people who have shown that they are literally incapable of living in peace and producing justice are not fit to live on planet Earth. Karma is universal law despite I'm white and I say so. Shalawam from the descendants of Sambo. 😊

It’s quite fascinating how they developed techniques to optimise their memory. It makes sense given that written records were not used, but still fascinating. Also developing ability to conceive of time as imaginary or non-real seems inconceivable to modern technology/science centred mind, given obvious utility to conceive of time as real, for example psychological advantage in planning for the future and adhering to goals. It’s quite sad that to integrate authentic conception of time is at odds with modern life.

The absence of the concept of time may sound romantic, as it removes the pressure to prepare for something ahead or the pressure to keep up with time or with others. But it is disastrous to an entire culture. You have to prepare for the coming winter, or the coming monsoon, or the coming dry spell. Even in Australia there are distinct seasons. This lack of awareness of time, prevented the Aborigines from advancing, so that they were completely unprepared for the arrival of the Europeans.

That's a common misconception when people first hear of this idea. In no shape of form is this concept telling you to stop planning. Plan, but plan right now, in this very moment. Don't let your mind go to 20 different places, be here and do your work. This not only increases focus but also betters the quality of life.

@@abhattab When “potential” is experienced, creation happens. Some people say we live in a matrix, or a holographic universe. A better analogy would be, that we are living “as a reflection”. As a reflection of infinite timeless potential.(the ONE) ONE cannot know the color of ONE’s eyes without observing ONEself in a reflection. Until then, only the potential of color exists. The reflection gives the illusion that two exist, thus giving ONE the ability to observe itself. To experience, to bring into existence, to realize the color of ONE’s eyes. Creation, is “potential” realizing itself into existence, through reflection. “TIME” is the mirror, or feature as you say.

If we are not experiencing it all first hand, there is a window or a middle-man inbetween us and it. Either we are following teachers or scriptures, we are following just another feeling towards the same thing that we are experiencing ourselves right here in this now, in our slightly different but still same imperfect now. And when learning any kind of passed down information no matter where on the spectrum of truth it is ranging, we are by doing so un-learning ourselves to put ourselves under & add on someone else's innerstanding, which with time are going to make us, our inner being, into more of a copy than an actual self. Life is live, feel, learn and re-remember and the life that we live is the teacher itself, where by living it we should be growing into living books of knowledge, if we actually live it for ourselves. We are both the teacher and the student, as we are both the observer and the one who project the whole moving picture that we see infront of us and dive into each new day when we open our eyes and the camera is again for us, rolling. On top of this, we are each others mirrors as well, reflecting all that greatness but also all that inner work that we should be doing. So really, we should be grateful for all interaction with life as there is a teacher in absolutely everything. When breaking it down, all we truly have is our energy and together with our energy all we truly need in this life is good health, good morals and a fine-tuned instrument, as in us, to express ourselves properly with, in order to free our minds. Let the caged bird fly. Follow no one who wishes followers but the one's who encourage you to live your life for you and to walk your own path. Only by doing so we'll truly know who we are and what we are truly here for. We have it all, need only ourselves and we need no middle-men to stay connected to source. We are all born out of it and were given a slightly different perspective to take in the experience with for a reason. So not to fall for false light. Saying that though, one can not escape what one are not first aware of. We are all god's until it finds a way to change the mind. 🌄

The Aboriginal conception of time has parallels to modern quantum theory. Their understanding of time as non-linear, it express itself as either visible or nonvisible. The big bang hypothesis does not suggest that there was nothing then something. It proposes that the universe has expanded rapidly from an infinitely tiny, hot, and dens central point, kind of like an explosion in laman terms hence the misnomer big bang. Time is relative to matter so if all matter is infinitely condensed, time is too argo a concept of before this big bang does not make sense, but it didn't come from nothing.

Hello. Love this. As pointed out this knowledge is in danger of disappearing. So I appreciate your effort in passing it along these modern internet songlines. In Canada, "Indigenous People" or "First Nations" are umbrella terms (among others), for people who's ancestors were on the land before the arrival on colonial settlers across the country. But locally, in each region, these people have specific names for their people and nations. Is that not so in Australia? At the top there was mention of 250+ nations, have the names of these nations been erased? And is there an umbrella term that folks in that part of the world that unite those many separate cultures? Hardly anyone in Canada says, "First Canadians" anymore because it's understood that Canada is a colonial construct that Indigenous People predate. I noticed that most of concepts outlined in the video that were attributed to Australian Indigenous People were in English. Are the native names of these ideas also erased? I'm just curious because I don't know and also if these were choices. One last thing, did you already make a video detailing the concept of Beginner's Mind? I feel like a lot of people in comments might find it useful. Thanks for your work! Peace from Tkaronto.

The "beginning of time" was the appearance of a rotating crescent on Saturn because it was backlit by our current sun. This progression allowed the indexing of time. Creation stories are generally not about the emergence of time, but about a kind of phase shift in the life of the solar system that was cataclysmic. Clearly this could not have been a story about the beginning of everything, but a reference to specific witnessed events which became an archetype.
