One of the highlights of the trip was the voice on the tannoy that said something like, "... and if you look to port you will see the masts of the SS Richard Montgomery that sank in 1944 carrying 6000 tons of munitions. For those who need a comparison, I believe the English authorities believe the blast would be quite similar in destructive power as the Halifax explosion in 1917. Yes, the English do have quite to worry about with the SS Richard Montgomery. For those who don't know, the Halifax Explosion happened when two ships collided in the Halifax harbor, and one of the two ships was transporting a large amount of various explosives for the war.
@neuralmute2 жыл бұрын
That's just what I was thinking of when he said 6000 tons. That's roughly the same as the amount of munitions the Mont Blanc was carrying when she exploded in Halifax harbour and destroyed half the city. The Montgomery causing an explosion even half as big would be a major disaster.

I live on the North shore of the mouth of the Thames Estuary. The Montgomery is a source of significant concern here. Sheerness, on the other side of the Estuary is closer, but Southend-On-Sea, the UKs newest city, which is also the borough in which I live, is larger and consists of an enormous quantity of high value property, business and residential, on its coast line, all of which would be under immediate threat of damage from any explosion. That damage, depending on the conditions concerned, could involve broken windows, flying debris causing secondary damage to structures and life, enormous damage to the local economy via destruction or intense damage to tourist spots, and thats before you even consider any damage done to the nearby refinery site, that has potential to be a threat to the whole county if it were to go up. To say the least of it, its a hazard alright. I think part of the procrastination that has occurred on the topic is that, despite experts being called in several times to look the wreck over, no one has come up with a good plan to safely dismantle the wreck, in such a way as to guarantee or even reasonably expect to successfully disassemble and render safe, the site, without causing an explosion in the attempt. Owing to the enormous age and degeneration of the wreck itself, and the instability of the now waterlogged explosives, the slightest disturbance could potentially set off a truly catastrophic event, in one of the busier shipping lanes in the world. The Thames may be less of a cargo hub than it used to be, but its still a vital artery for trade and cargo all the same, and the work to dismantle the wreck, naturally, isn't something we could reasonably expect to be done while ships full of valuable cargo still travel through the Estuary. Between the risk to business, and the enormous risk to life and infrastructure that even the smallest mistake represents, its actually pretty easy to see why no one will take responsibility and see something finally done about it. No one wants to be the mouse that knocks over the oil lamp, no one wants to be the soldier that triggers the IED, and no parliamentarian or councillor wants to be the one to take responsibility for, potentially, two vast, smoking craters in or around the Estuary and its surrounds. Billions of pounds of damage could be done in the time it takes to sneeze. Its no small task.

The reasons is what nations, produced what explosives? A lot of the allied munitions (1930's through 40's) was an organic based explosive and thus over time does degrade or rot away. Whereas the Axis munitions relied heavily on synthetic based explosives, this changed towards the end of the 2nd world war with the Allies using more and more synthetic based munitions. Before the RDX days. So disposal at sea was seen as a viable safe option as Allied munitions would degrade over time, but as with many things in life there are cravats to this and not all munitions where made in the same vein, but explains the reputation of British bombs used by the RAF being under powered by weight when compared to a comparable say German Bomb. However in the case of the shipwreck in the Thames that ship was carrying bombs and anti-aircraft munitions destined for the USAF, plus 76 mm tank rounds hard to pin down the manufacturing types as around that time there was 2 different process's going on from 2 big chemical plants/ munition factories handling the bulk of that production.

My take on "blue eyes people in media": 1) people with blue eyes are generally rated higher on "beautyness" 2) we generally like to talk with beautifull people so positive feedback in social interactions gives blue-eyed people bigger openness to those interactions 3) it is more likely that blue-eyed person will start a YT channel becouse of positive self image and previous experiences in SI PS: I read somewhere that blue eyed-people are perceived as prettier becouse their black pupils are more visible than on a darker shade. Again, other people see better unconscious body language of "blue-eyed ones" and so give them more positive feedback in return. e.g. brown eyed people are "harder to read" and so positive feedback is smaller in comparison

I'm referring to the thousands of sarcophagi, dumped in the deep oceans all around the world, for decades, with radioactive waste. What I know is that procedure was considered at the time, a "temporary solution" by the countries involved in developing atomic bombs and enriching Uranium, and that those containers/sarcophagi/coffins were built to " live" for about a hundred years. They are at various depths and, some of them, have been reported to start spilling radioactivity already. Nobody talks about this problem anymore. Eventually, all of them are going to release their poison. Would be nice if you talk about the subject. I already used ChatGPT to try to understand what can and should be done and the scenario is terrifying... Happy Christmas and a very good New Year!

First, ChatGPT is interesting, but should not be used as a source of information or to recommend a course of action. Second, context is important. The total amount of radioactivity put into those undersea dumping grounds is less than 1% of what was released from Chernobyl, and less than 1% of 1% of what was released through global nuclear testing. Not that the dumping grounds are a great thing to have around, but you don't need to actively worry about it; practically speaking its release isn't enough to create a big problem.

If you think the Richard Montgomery is bad, just look up Sellafield in the north west of England. It is one of the most radioactive places on Earth. It was the site of the windscale fire, one of the worst nuclear accidents in history, where nuclear material was emitted into the atmosphere and spread over the north of England. It was also a nuclear reprocessing plant for nearly 70 years, and a nuclear material dumping ground for the world. Much of the nuclear material was simply dumped into massive open lakes and left. This water remains warm year-round, meaning that birds took to bathing in it, which resulted in nuclear bird poo being spread around the area, so they now hire people to shoot at birds going near the lake. The whole 650 acre, >1,000 building complex is a shambles and it’s unbelievable that this stuff is just left there.

I live in Southend on sea.. As kids, we spent SOOO many days climbing on the Montongery.. And in it.. We had no idea how dangerous it was until we grew up.. When the tide goes out, you can walk to it.

Having now learned about the SS Montgomery now as well, it makes me wonder how a explosion from it would compare to that of the Halifax explosion that leveled a great chunk of the city...

Awesome. Can't wait to watch this one. I live 50 miles away. There's some really interesting forts close by, left over from WW2. Worth reading about if you're interested. Look up "Redsands sea forts"

I live aboard a boat on a Thames tidal creek about 7 miles from the wreck. If it exploded the bang would be immense but the wave depends on the tidal state. The Thames estuary almost dries out at low water and only leaves a deep water shipping channel in the middle. The rest are miles of mudflats. Also checkout Mulberry Harbor which was being towed out of the estuary part of the D-day landings. It met the same fate and is in the same area. The Red Sands Forts and Shoeberry Boom are WW2 relics also worth a look.

Happy Holidays Joe!! I've been following ITER and NIF. It's interesting to note that ITER is built to produce grid power, but will only be .7 efficient. The NIF reaction isn't designed to produce power, but is the only one to reach positive energy production with about 1.5x input. Also, ITER had a fairly serious problem with a defective containment wall which is going to set the project back.

Those figures are misleading and do not account for ALL the input power. They think they can make up new numbers by just subtracting the laser power required for inertial confinement and then tell everyone they are getting a +1x input, which they are definitely not. Sabine Hossenfelder covered this in a recent vid.
