@TubeYou Its not point arguing with you, I keep saying something you keep saying other things that have nothing to do with what we discussed previously. You don't seem to understand that US has no reason to keep their army in their yard and they keep it all over the world, including Europe. Few comments ago you were saying that US did everything and EU did nothing, now you keep telling me stories of NATO and the countries that take part in it. If you paid more attention in the video you would see that the reason why the debris was left out is cause the engineers didn't predict the fact that the ice would shift faster than they predicted, then suddenly they packed their shit and got home without cleaning their mess thinking it would be no biggie if their left their debris behind. Obviously this has been proved to not be the case and someone needs to clean that shit up. Its pretty clear who is to blame here.

It's curious that the Seeker made it look like the base was a friendly cooperation between Denmark and U.S., whereas many news stories about this base highlight a controversy: > The Danish government had taken a stand against nuclear weapons and would never condone a nuclear base on Greenland. But in 1957, an American ambassador, Val Peterson, made an official overture to the Danish prime minister, H.C. Hansen. If-just say-the US had nuclear weapons in Greenland, would the Danish government want to know? Five days later, the prime minister had a response: “I do not think that your remarks give rise to any comments from my side,” And: > In this case, they had gone ahead with construction of the camp outside of the designated areas, without Denmark’s approval as required by the 1951 Defence Agreement. It was, as Peterson described it, “a dreadful blunder” from the American’s side. The application had been sent earlier that year, but contrary to custom, Denmark had yet to respond.

@yumri46 жыл бұрын
yeah but it most likely is not as easy as dig it up then dispose of it. The most effective use of disposable would be to use the PCB as nuke power plant fuel. It will not get very hot though also not produce a lot of energy either. It however will atomize everything into parts that will not harm the environment. Another one will be to take it apart 1 atom at a time and repurpose those atoms into something else. For example make a diamond to then be made into a drill head or a gem stone for a ring out of PCB with the P and the B being made into other things that are useful. Taking stuff apart 1 atom at a time probably is time consuming to separate all the atoms from one another and not lose any of them in the process. The thing will be who gets the output of the process as when you make a huck of useless toxic stuff into a lot of variable stuff from applying alot of energy and pressure to it who owns the output? By no means will this one be cheap but it will get rid of all the stuff that is a ozone containment.

@@aandre311 I agree with you that the radio active waste needs to be handled differently from the other waste products down there. Most likely the route of just sending it into a far away star is not a valid solution either. So why not break it all down into non-radioactive materials on Earth? It is costly and will not be a net positive of energy but will get rid of the radioactive materials. The resulting stuff most likely will be gases. IF you capture those gases and when they are in the form that you can then use a lab to turn then into something useful then why not? besides for them being the most expensive form of what they turn into of course.

I like how they try to make all of the 'tons of waste' sound like it's 'scary nuclear waste'. When none of the nuclear waste was actually left there. They left the coolant water, but the fuel is solid ceramic encased in zirconium or other metal. The only thing that would cause the water to be 'radioactive' is neutrons hitting the hydrogen in the water and become tritium or deuterium. Deuterium is more or less stable. The ocean has a ton of it - though it is diffuse compared with hydrogen. Tritium meanwhile has a half-life of 12.3 years, (so it's already halved itself more than 4 times by now.) and more importantly, poses no risk to humans. Tritium beta decays, and with such a low amount of energy that it can't penetrate your clothes or the top few dead layers of skin in any meaningful amount. And it has no bio-loading. If you drink or inhale it, it will not concentrate in one part of the body, and it will get flushed out of the body with a half-life of about 10 days. Eating a banana exposes you to more radiation. Which means that 'toxic waste' is really just the diesel fuel. And... well: duh! So basically, we have an underground base made of sheet metal run by a nuclear reactor. They took the nuclear reactor out and left the base. And now there is a terrible, scary possibility that what amounts to an abandoned farm with a few tractor full of diesel is going to emerge from the ice. This is pretty pathetic. A cool story, but really pathetic that they spend all this effort trying to make things sound scary and try to make it sound like climate change is going to turn Greenland into a Nuclear wasteland.

Why don't most channels on youtube ever explain why a video is being re-uploaded. At least mention it in the description, for fock sake. Don't just leave us in the shadows...
@truthsayer23106 жыл бұрын
LayeredOnions there’s many reasons that could be the cause, demonetization isn’t likely because it would just get demobilized again. It could be the original film/file was corrupted so there where problems in the video and the creator didn’t like it. The original could’ve gotten taken down and KZbin said it was good to be reuploaded as an error on their part. Could’ve been copy right issues. There’s a lot that happens behind the scenes people don’t understand especially at the size of their channel I’m sure they have to manage a lot. I used to be really into KZbin, got a half a million subs, my channel was banned so I went on with my life. Some of us also sign contracts for our channels to partners and can’t disclose certain info which could be revenue/ads/intros/outros/music and even down to the software. These contracts are legally binding and can make a creator go to court and most of us don’t have time. If we make KZbin videos considering the time it takes to edit/film/document/thumbnails. Hope this didn’t ramble to much and helped you understand a bit of it behind the scenes.

@professorquarter6 жыл бұрын
We returned the land (which we payed for) to Denmark following the closure of the base. Since then, Denmark has devolved most internal concerns to its constituent country of Greenland. Regardless, it likely will not be a problem for quite some time, and considering this is merely one site (and in an area of little economic importance at that), realistically no one is going to clean it up.
@lmao27096 жыл бұрын
professorquarter except that if ice melts and nuclear material spills, it won't just contaminate Greenland. If you are familiar with Chernobyl, then I'm guessing it could be like that. Possibly worse. If you aren't familiar with Chernobyl, it was a soviet nuclear power plant in Ukraine ( which didn't have much economical importance ) and it went into meltdown and spread nuclear material all over Europe and Russia (which made the percent of cancer go up a bit for people nearby) If it did go off in Greenland, nuclear material could go into Canada, America, Russia, and Western Europe.
@commonsense316 жыл бұрын
Well given the fact, that you wanted a base there and you built it yourself. Then because American miscalculations, They abandoned the base because it was collapsing leaving everything they built to contaminate the area. But it doesn't matter I know My government is going to pay for it and fix it. And then we also gonna own the new Shipping route opening up because the ice is melting.
@professorquarter6 жыл бұрын
@@lmao2709 It most definitely wouldnt. In Chernobyl, radioactive material was blown into the air by an explosion. There is no actual reactor at this site and even if there was, it wouldnt have been running for years and years. This situation more comparable to a low-level superfund site. It isn't even that bad compared to the majority of sites and it is in the middle of nowhere.
@professorquarter6 жыл бұрын
@@commonsense31 It wasn't just us, the Soviet threat was very real to Denmark and it was for that reason that they accepted our money for the site. We literally gave your government money and gave the land that we payed for back without demanding compensation. And no, it is not going to contaminate a wide area even in a worst case scenario. There is literally nothing around this site for miles upon miles and it isn't even that big to begin with. Yes, radioactive metals and various pollutants could leach into the surrounding area (which is largely devoid of complex life). It wouldnt be alone in this regard, but the environmental and human impact of this given the location would honestly be less than an old abandoned gas station in a populated area. You guys really probably don't need to clean it up. Fix up an old building in Copenhagen instead and you've done more good for humanity.
@commonsense316 жыл бұрын
professorquarter well we are going too. But I’m curious I can’t find any information about the claim that US paid anything for the land. And given the fact that they started building the base before They got approval from the danish government, and that US knew that Denmark would reject any Nuclear weapons or power plants presence in Greenland.

Okay but I'm curious about the costs of not cleaning up. Like if the total contaminants are equal to that left by a plastic bag in the ocean then it probably isnt worth the costs of going to the middle of no wear, sending people under the ice and cleaning up. And yeah there's radioactive water but how much and how dangerous is it?
@bigzcutler15946 жыл бұрын
Lets be honest it wouldnt actually do anything to the environment if left to unthaw. The ocean is massive any nuclear waste or diesel fuel that gets into the water would dissipate and be harmless. We could detonate a nuclear bomb in the ocean and it literally wouldn't do anything.

As a citizen, I agree that the US should be responsible for the cleanup of Camp Century. The nature of the hazardous materials was known from the start and handled as such by personnel. The fact that the materials and structures were abandoned rather than removed makes some sense, given the lack of understanding of nuclear power at the time and that of managing its waste. An incident is inevitable, still the question of when, at this site unless handled properly. Furthermore, this is a fine example of the potential detriments to rapid progression in any project or technology. Careful planning for before and after are essential for stability going forward.

If it quit snowing and is starting to melt it should be really easy to find the base since there were several escape hatches that clearly stood above the snow line when the base was built. Apparently they are lower than the current level of snow, which would make the base hard to find and disprove there argument of the base being exposed from melt. Job security?

I love how quickly the world turns on the USA. yea, we built it...(with help Im sure from the country where its located.) I agree we should be helping to fix the problem... that being said the US did not walk into a different country and build things like this without the agreement and help of the countries they're built within themselves. Countries get "aid" from the USA to allow things like this to happen. Its amazing how quickly they'll accept the "AID" and/or use our country as a police force for those who cannot govern themselves and at the same time complain that we do so.
@commonsense316 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure Denmark never received "AID" from the US, America wanted a base to counter the Old Soviet Union. It was USA that wanted the base, So you are embarrassing yourself with comparing it to a underdeveloped country that receives aid from America. You did built it yourself, Why do you think the scientists have to use sonar to map the entire base. Because USA don't want to give out their Construction plans to Denmark.

After reading a few of the comments below it is amazing how ignorant most of the commenters are about the drivers of this project. This was primarily a NATO initiative funded by US and NATO with the agreement of all parties including Denmark. The decision to abandon it in place was known by all at the time. If Denmark had concerns they could have addressed it themselves but didn't. If NATO wanted to clean it up they could have but didn't. The next 50 years are going to be interesting to watch with the volume of uniformed individuals with questionable educations. It's also fascinating to see all of the hate being released in the comments in this and most other youtube posts. Gives you an insight into the true human condition.

Century was actually a test to see if a small nuclear facility could support a company size military unit. There is much more in Greenland than Camp Century. The largest BMEWS site is or was there and Thule AFB and a Nike Battery was also there. This entire Greenland installation was part of NORAD, not simply a US installation. I do not believe this so called cooling water is reactive. Denmark was very protective about nuclear waste and the US too very careful action to prevent ANY nuclear waste.

The half life of uranium is roughly 26 years. It’s been double that since the 60s. Sure the coolant may still be there but it’s had a significant amount of time for the radioactive material to decay at its natural rate. Will it cause serious issues if released into the ocean, no, it’ll dilute as everything does and will cause less radioactive impact than the sun does on a daily basis. The plastics and diesel fuel are of more concern than radioactive coolant.
