most young jazz musicians miss Sinatra's greatness and even think he's corny but hopefully eventually get it. Sad to say I was one of them 25 yrs ago. Miles knew. I'm glad years of playing ballads got me there Thanks Bob, your a very fine and generous musician.

Bob, my dad (Bernie Kaufman) was a woodwin player with Frank (he was a noted NYC studio cat) for many, many years. I spent a lot of time in the studios with them (he did the "She Shot Me Down" album at the end of Frank's run- several flute solos on opening of some of the Ballards). I am so touched and thrilled to see your pleasure at listening to Sinatra. As you are doing in the video, I listen to every note, probably every day. I had tears watching you appreciate the music. And oh, BTW, you and 'Puppy are quite awesome too. My dad would have liked to have listened to you and played with you. Thanks for the video!

That's an incredible album indeed Bob, and great pick to show Sinatra's phrasing, what a delightful video! The version of "I've Got A Crush On You" on there with the tenor fills gets me everytime. Such smooth and gorgeous playing and these comments of Sinatra throughout... the uncontrolled laughter of the tenor saxophonist after his last line right into the mouthpiece is gold. 😂

That album was always on my top favorites list since I was a kid. I love how you can listen to the tracks in order on the original and it’s like you’re at the show. Even the breaks and Sinatra telling jokes was recorded. Pure gold.

When I was studying trombone I asked my teacher how he learned to phrase so well, and he told me he just played along to all the Frank Sinatra albums he had access to. Some of the best advice I've had.

I just spent last weekend doing a gig of all Crooner tunes, with two singers, and a lot of these songs were recorded by Frank Sinatra. Without a doubt one of the greatest phrasers in all of vocal jazz history. Sinatra At The Sands is one of the greatest jazz albums of all time, and especially Fly Me To The Moon, that is the definitive version. Great video Bob

My favorite Sinatra album. Love how the Basie band kicked him into another gear. As Sinatra ballads go, Make It One for My Baby is pure gold. Also, the shout chorus on Fly Me to the Moon is legendary.

On his recording of 'The September of my years', there's so much to learn from his phrasing and nuance of melody. But the most special moment imo, is his modulation on the word 'and', in the line "and I find.... that I'm smiling gently as I near ......September'" Its simply sublime..

It's such a great learning experience and so awesome when someone breaks down (like you did in this video) the finer brush strokes of some of the Greats. I love this style and Ive heard so many singers and soloists do this, and the best way I could make this concept clear to myself was to view it as "delaying the timing of first few words/syllables/notes of a phrase, yet yet still expressing them fast enough to still manage to catch up to the timing of the last 2 or 3 words/syllables/notes of the phrase" But the way you broke it down here and the examples you used just made this concept as clear and concise as EVER!! 👌 Thank you so much Bob. Interesting fact I found out in research is that although the arrangements are credited to Quincy Jones, there is one uncredited Thad Jones arrangement on the album (Makin' Whoopee). Makes the whole album even better knowing that (for me, at least), but it's sad they didn't really give him much credit.

This was the first Sinatra album I ever bought, I was being economical and wanted the album with the most songs on it. Eventually I collected all of his albums but this is still one of my favorites. Sinatra with a straight up jazz big band is as good as it gets.

I admit, I expected Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, or maybe even Chris Potter, the usual suspects. BUT Frank is genius. I have loved this album for a long time. Frank was all class. I love that you did this video! I’ll be listening again to refresh my musical delight. 😊

Really great video. I'm a big Sinatra fan and you've done a really interesting analysis. Sinatra was a true master of his art, with fantastic pitch and tone and vocal power. This is a great example of how the Real Book is just a skeleton for all musicians to interpret the way they feel the melody and the changes. There's one thing missing from your discussion which I think is very important --- Sinatra's rhythm. He has a way of singing behind the beat, and knowing exactly how to play with the rhythm in a unique way like nobody else. He's like a master conductor of his orchestra, who inspires the best musicians to play their very best on everything he did.

Sinatra had good phrasing from the get go, but his great phrasing came after singing with Nelson Riddle. Yeah, it's hard to beat Q, but Riddle really knew how to arrange for and back a singer. Just ask Linda Ronstadt. Thanks, Bob, for reminding us about how important music interpretation is. It ain't just the notes, it's the spaces.

I used to listen to the album, Where Are You”, by Sinatra with strings, all slow tempo selections including the title piece. I haven’t heard it in years, but I imagine there’s some good phrasing there! Thanks for posting!

Outstanding Video Bob. Phrasing isn't Everything, but, it's Almost Everything. In my Humble Opinion, the Classiest Phrasing in Jazz is Ben Webster, Johnny Hodges, Stan Getz, Paul Desmond, Johnny Smith, Oscar Peterson, Bobby Hackett with the Jackie Gleeson Orchestra, Toots Thielemans, Billie Holiday, and Frank Sinatra. Great video. That bit from "Angel Eyes" may be the best phrasing moment, but Frank's top swagger moment on the album is "Run for cover! . . . Run n hide!" over the trombone ensemble build up to the solo (Al Grey, I think). [Also: was just listening to "Can't Wait for Perfect" again this week. What a great album, Bob. Frank Sinatra remains my 100-year-old mom's favorite crooner. "Ol' Blue Eyes", earned the moniker, "Chairman of the Board" for both his musical skill but also his acting chops. So I'm guessing you also don't have a way to play his LPs? There are lots that can be learned from the old masters. Glad you took some time to notice. And it's not always about speed or noodles, but style and grace.

OMG, this is also one of my absolute faves! “How’d all these people get into my room?” I was first introduced to this album when I was a teenager by my Basie loving uncle….on vinyl!! Took me years to get my own copy on CD (this was the 90s after all). I still remember the excitement when I stumbled across it in a record store, like, hands trembling excitement. 😂 The big question is, have you found the set the Basie band plays before the Sinatra one?

Bob, it is an entirely separate album called Basie at the Sands subtitled Before Frank - it includes the Magic Flea at the most burning tempo ever - that was the tune that used to be played on the breaks for the studio audience for the Johnny Carson tonight show
