To start game 5 with the cup in the building, news broke pre game that the Florida Panthers number 1 player Matthew Tkachuk would be out for the game. With their season on the line, you knew it had to be bad and now we know, it was. We saw Tkachuk make some huge hits these playoffs, but in game 3 of the Stanley cup final, the favour was returned when Kolesar rocked Tkachuk with a great open ice hit after which, Tkachuk was noticeably shook taking a stumble to get up and while he scored the game tying goal to push OT in game 3, game 4 was tough. He reportedly needed help from brother Brady just to be able to get out of bed. Well, after the Vegas Golden Knights took game 5, Paul Maurice came out post game and shared what was really going on.. Matthew Tkachuk was playing with a broken sternum. I cover this and more in todays NHL hockey video

part of the game. NHL is different. having a broken foot or sternum and playing is not the same as playing with a concussion. if players want to play, let them. I have no doubt Tkachuk would have sat earlier if this was regular season, but this is the SCF and there’s no tomorrow.

The Panthers wanted to intimidate all their competition with excessive hitting etc,,almost to the point of bullying. They got back exactly what they gave out in this series and the previous ones. Kudos to the Knights!! Hockey is a hard, tuff sport. It makes no sense in the rhelm of sportsmanship to injure the competitoin inorder to place a win. The Florida style of hockey almost reached to the low level of the Phillies in their hayday!,, This final should have been smart fast entertaining hockey. Paul Maurice's coaching for this type of hockey failed his Florida fans and himself,,,all these injuries should be expected when encountering an equally formidable opponent!

Tough break for the affected players on a human level, but that still means that they should be recovered and ready before or soon after next fall's training camps start.

Based on what Paul Maurice said, this is an SC (sternoclavicular) joint injury. Depending on the details of the injury, it can be quite scary. The clavicle stabilizes and protects. Behind the clavicle are major complexes of nerves and blood vessels. If the injury is a full dislocation and the detached head of the clavicle is pushed inwards behind the sternum, or if the clavicle itself is broken proximally (i.e., close to the sternum), there's a danger of secondary injuries (like internal bleeding) that can actually be life-threatening. Pretty clear that it wasn't one of these worst-case scenarios, but even so, I'm very surprised that the Panthers' medical team cleared him to play on.

I used to work on a frac crew. One night I snapped by distal biceps tendon. It only hurt some for a second or two and my biceps just felt crampy after that. I didn't even know that I ruptured it. Although I heard it, the reported pain is said to be agonizing. For whatever reason it just didn't really hurt. I wanted to keep working but they made me stop for the night. The next morning it was apparent what happened after I got my winter gear off. A😮 doctor confirmed it to the disbelief of everyone because that injury is supposed to be very very painful. All I noticed was a slight decrease in strength. Within 2 days my entire forearm on the bottom was black, blue and red from my wrist to my elbow joint. My point is maybe they should be stopping players with injuries from playing. Just because it's not agonizing pain doesn't mean it isn't serious. I was used to soreness, busted fingers, pain and aches etc so it was just in my nature to think "meh, it's not bad" and try to work through it. Many athletes in contact sports are the same. They're always sore and busted up.

Yeah looks like Tkachuk finally ran into the one player who finally got sick of him being a douchebag, Keegan Kolesar. Tkachuk has checked Eichel, then attempted to strangle Petro with his stick....while Petro was facing him. Kolesar checked Tkachuk so hard he broke his sternum. So I don't think Florida will see Tkachuk for an extended period of time. Fixing a broken sternum is almost the same as open heart surgery. When surgeons suture up the split sternum, they use some very big curved needles, and no rust suture wire. Then they have to suture a pad on top that gets reabsorbed by the body itself.

These guys are causing themselves to have life long complications by playing through things that should be treated asap. Just imagine if Tkachuk took another similar hit while already injured. That could have been the end of his career. Not worth it for the toughness points.

Just to be clear, when it's playing through pain, then yes, that's toughness and they deserve lots of credit for that because hockey is a tough sport. I'm talking about playing through a real injury like this where there's a serious risk of making in significantly worse by playing anyway. In a case like this, the team should not have let Tkachuk play game 4 because they want him back next season and the one after that and so on.

a broken sternum doesn't make sense considering the context. a complete fracture would be impossible to play with, as he would need to be immobilized entirely. even a partial fracture is super dangerous because if he got hit again, a piece of bone could pierce his heart. no trainer or doctor would clear him to play with that injury. either it is something different or they aren't telling the truth. it could be a lot of things, but if not a fracture of some kind, it could be a collapsed or bruised lung.

To win the Cup definitely leaves a mark on your team - both good and bad. Last year, Sam Girard suffered a broken sternum in the playoffs as well. He wanted to keep playing but the Avs' trainers wouldn't let him. Maurice mentions that they're gonna have a tough time even making the playoffs next year, which hits close to home. The Avalanche never were able to get even close to fully healthy this season and it took a late season push to even make the playoffs. It's the price of going for the Cup!

Holy shit ok. You're real. So I've been needing to ask: Do you feel the corruption Bettman employed when you think of your team? How much extra you paid to have less players protectable? How Bettman FORCED the narrative that begas has no chance and isn't stacked af and just has a normal chance like anyone else? You guys don't get snow, either. I'm wondering: Do you even have kid fans who one day want to play on your team? Do you they practice in the desert? I have many more questions.
@vegasrenie
@vegasrenie 10 ай бұрын
The first question about Bettman is just silly. It's leading and irrelevant. Especially since Vegas has just completed their sixth season with only six original players. The expansion process used to develop Vegas is the exact same one used in Seattle for the Kraken. I believe that's why they made it into the playoffs in their second season. It's a winning formula because there is no use in having a new team that can't win or draw in people. We do get snow. Not a lot, admittedly, but if you paid attention you would see that we get a surprising amount of snow because we are high desert, not low desert. For instance, we are in the high Mojave desert where it is not unusual to get snow anywhere from November through February. Occasionally March. In the higher elevations around Mt. Charleston, there could be snow through June. And there was, on June 7th, to be exact. This year, we had a surprising amount of snow because of the unusual precipitation on the West Coast.
@MOW262
@MOW262 10 ай бұрын
@@vegasrenie "No use for a new team unless they make money." Yeah, Bettman isn't interested in growing hockey. He wants money, and is willing to make any new team hyper competitive, not just give them a fair shake and let them work for those first 6 years to earn a playoff spot and MAYBE get into later rounds. A team that starts out of nowhere, literally from scratch, and ventures to the last rounds of the playoffs for years in a row until they eventually win it on their 6th year? Bro I'm from CO but what the fuck about St. Louis? Them finally getting a cup was legend BECAUSE OF THE STRUGGLE. Bettman is ruining the status quo for money. It's a completely relevant question. The only compliment I can possibly offer is that at least he kept the formula for Seattle. Would have rather he WENT BACK TO THE RULES FOR ALL OTHER TEAMS THAT JOINED (Dallas, etc), but at least he's headstrong? Teams are NOT supposed to get to the playoffs round two their second fucking year, and Stanley cup winners after 6. You short sited folk only care about sparkles and fireworks, I swear. The entire league doesn't favor this method as it literally can erase a decade or MORE of hard work by teams like the Wild to get to the playoffs. Maybe spend money on getting us on espn, or closing shit teams THEN opening new franchises. This "buy competitiveness" is corrupt to me. So the answer is no, btw, you get no snow really. 4.19 inches of rain on average and POINT FUCKING zero three inches (000000.03 inches) of snow on average yearly. You should quit listing mountainous regions like that makes up any reasonable portion of where your fanbase lives/where your state's economy functions. I live in Colorado so stop, Buffalo NY exists and you literally likely have never experienced heavy snow and for sure unlikely you've skated a pond. If you like hockey, move to a hockey town. Hockey towns are such because of the fucking fanbase. Dropping gd teams in a desert is a show of greed. That's your team. Greed. You waste my time each game we visit with your fuckoff pageantry. Prayers for your demise.
@vegasrenie
@vegasrenie 10 ай бұрын
@@MOW262 Salty much? The only part of your rant that I agree with is to shut down the shitty teams and give the expansion system room to grow. Of course it's about money. Do you think that somebody is going to go through all of the work to open an expansion team for, what? The fun of it? That is not a surprise. It seems that you are saying that newer teams shouldn't try as much because a lot of older teams haven't won. Either ever or not recently. What kind of logic is that? If the old system didn't allow teams to hit the ground running, then who's fault is that? If the new system allows teams like Vegas and Seattle to become immediately competitive, then it is what it is. I don't see the problem. In addition, there are a lot of reasons why teams aren't making it. Either they're not paying for the talent they need, they are depending upon questionable reasons to not get the people they need (and I acknowledge that sometimes it's the luck of the draw), or their fanbase, such as it is, can't support the team to be able to afford the talent they need. I don't see what that has to do with the expansion system. Maybe you can enlighten me. We get snow. ish. And I already said it wasn't a lot of snow for crissakes. We are not Colorado. Thank goodness because I am allergic to blizzards. I'm originally from Pennsylvania, and my first hockey game was during the Flyers first Stanley Cup run in the 70s, so I'm not exactly a newbie. I already know what "real" snow is and I know how hockey works as well. So like it or not, even if it's repulsive to you and you think it's the most disgusting and corrupt thing ever, Vegas is a hockey town. It has been for a few years now. There are people here from literally all over the United States, and there are always hometown jerseys along with Knights jerseys during games. The fact that we are a draw, people are coming here for vacation anyway, and the hockey team is deeply beloved - our history is something the rest of the hockey world just doesn't understand - may irritate people but that's the simple facts. The Avs will be here in the fall. You need to come to a Knights game and wear an Avs jersey. I guarantee that you will be poked fun at but it will be good natured. There are too many of us from too many other places to take that seriously. The hardest part for me? Trying to decide who to cheer for when the Flyers are in town.

A friend he made in the minors, wouldn't give up and played 10 years in the minors with a couple of cups of coffee in Pittsburg. His friend retired and joined the Edmonton Fire Department. Panthers said time and time again they play a tough physical game, hitting hard. They might not get the injuries each time, but it adds to the wear and tear, so its not surprising. They run the risk when they take this strategy , if you want to play this way, vs skill, its a risk in the playoffs esp if you have a longer run and can lose your key players. Thats something they have to live with and their choice. But Vegas played smart and better. BTW I am not a Vegas supporter

Cant have yer cake and eat it too. Because the simple fact is most of the injuries that Panthers were incurring were self induced... they were physical and bullied(in a good way) the East on their way to the Final. Then attempted to do the same to a far deeper, healthier and BIGGER team welcoming the hits. So... ya want more health? Well its what got em there... they needed the break cuz they were bruising their way. An athlete doesn't need to have a concussion to see the Stanley Cup dangling in front of them and decide to ignore injuries they shouldn't.
