I just got my TA-66 yesterday from Apos. It's my first headphone tube amp. I'm loving it so far paired with HD650s, fed by the DAC in my Shanling EC3. The stock tubes sound great, and they aren't even close to being burned in yet, good soundstage, punchy, tight bass, warm midrange. Male and female vocals both sound excellent. I'm hooked.

Great review, again! I still have the original TA-26, just find that having the on/off switch in front for a tube amp makes more sense. The 6N8P replacements are easier. I have the Sylvania 6SN7GT, Ken-Rad 6SN7GTA, GE 6SN7, a Soviet OTK 6SN7 and my favorite being the Tungsol 6SN7GT Mouse Ears. I find it hard to get more options or better replacement for the 6N5P, only managed to get a Soviet Union 6H5C/6080, GE 6AS7 and Thomson-CSF 6080WA and none really delights me yet. That just means it amplifies the incoming voltage by 18dB which is fairly significant - it's just a touch less than doubling the loudness of the incoming signal.

In an interview Rob Watts mentioned that the licensing cost to use the 4.4 connector was very high and cited it as the reason for not including it in the Mojo 2 to stay within their target for pricing. I wonder if the cost reduction mostly came from not including it on the TA 66. Nice review as always!

So it makes the zmf Verite to show some of its potential and have more wet/ liquid sounding? on any SS amp, VC's decays are way too quick and dry and boring.. I've been hesitating between getting ta-66 or Aune s17 pro for VC closed to have it sound a bit less dry and more enjoyable, maybe more liquid sounding. My previous amps are Singxer sa1, MOJO 2, RU6, and VC sounded very much dry on all of them. 1. Do you think this would make them more pleasant and liquid sounding?. 2. Or you would recommend Aune s17 as a better option? (But it'd be more dry and boring sounding?) For reference, I prefer liquid ~ planar like sounds but I'm stuck with my VC. I would probably choose a good solid state amp for the P2 Pro. They don't really need extra smoothness or warmth. The TA-66 isn't overly rich, but still might not be the best fit with the Sivgas. That's a great little DAC, you may struggle to better its performance. The K11 R2R also had a really good DAC, if you want a great value all-in-one with amp. It won't sound any different to the SU1 but it will give you amp, se and balanced jacks, digital display and RCA out / preamp option, if you later add a separate amp. It doesn't have EQ though, which I use with my headphones. You could just add a Wiim mini for the EQ and streaming and be done (assuming you already have an amp). So many great options out there, have fun with whatever you choose!

Thanks for the wonderful review. I got my TA-66 two days ago and I have listened with HD800s for about 10 hours total with the stock tubes for classical music. It is my first OTL tube amp and I am still learning about the new experience. While I still enjoy the sound, I find that the clarity/detail is somewhat lacking as it has more emphasis on the bass compared to the hybrid Xduoo MT-604 that I have. My question is how I can alter the sound signature slightly by tube rolling to make a bass a bit tighter and increase the treble? Should I try replacing the pre-am (the small) tube first? If yes, what model should I consider? Thank you very much and greetings from Canada!
@PassionforSound2 ай бұрын
Hi Brian, what you're hearing is a very normal character of pure tube amps compared to solid state or hybrid designs. The good news is that both tubes influence what you're hearing so it's worth playing with both. The best bet is to check some reviews for the tubes that can go in each socket, but the power socket (the larger, back tube) has more options available so probably start there with something like a new production Tung Sol 6AS7G like the one I'm using as it's affordable and sounds great.

@Andrew-cp7mc I think I bought the 6AS7G here in Australia as new production stock, but it's been a while. I started with the TA-22 which I quite enjoy, tube-rolling with various 12AU7 tubes. Then I got the TA-26 because I always wanted the Dark Horse but I didn’t want to buy such an old amp and along came the TA-26. I was a little annoyed that xDuoo released an updated version with the pentaconn connector and yes I know it’s the same amp. I would have liked the convenience without the need to use an adapter cable but I need to use an adapter cable for my 4-pin XLR cables anyway. I’ve skipped over all of xDuoo’s subsequent amplifier iterations… until now. I think I just might sell that TA-26. The TA-22? Dunno. I do enjoy having an amp for 12AU7-rolling. BTW I was able to procure a bunch of Russian tubes (and others) for the TA-26 before the Russian war of aggression. Since the war started Russian tubes have become more scarce and with scarcity comes increased prices. Ah who am I kidding? I’ll buy this one and keep all three for a while. Time will tell what I do with them.

I can give my input as I own the TA-22. It's nothing short of phenomenal and easily the best dac/amp I've ever owned, period. I put two Genalex Gold Lion tubes in mine and the presentation is balanced with warmth, rich, and spacious. The stock tubes are good by themselves but I prefer the Gold Lion tubes. I've also tried RCA clear tops which sound more analytical, and Electroharmonix which are the warmest sounding of the sets I've used. It powers my HD 600, and hungrier planars like the Moondrop Para and Moondrop Venus balanced wonderfully. It also drives them great single ended too. My only cons in my use case about the device are as follows: -The menu is a pain to navigate -Class A amplifier generates noticeable heat, so on hot, humid summer days I have to switch back to another solid state amplfier that's more efficient and runs cooler Overall, it has my seal of approval and has my highest recommendation. Apos offers them refurbished which I bought for $415 which makes it an incredible bargain.

@@PassionforSound Have you tried tube rolling the TA-66 with Psvane 6SL7 Art Series using Jemosa 6SL7(6SN7) converter adapter (you can get from AliExpress? Here's my feedback :) I wish I can post you the photos. On the HeadFi forum I had conflictling reports from other people, my first foray into tube rolling, I thought was going to be a costly experiment that went wrong. Thankfully this wasn't so........................phew! Though the Psvane representative alluded to the 6SL7(6SN7) to 6N2 adapter/converter should work in theory because it has the same voltage (6.3v) but slightly higher current. The Royal Mail delivered the adapter today. Excitement and trepidation at the same time, well at least it fits into the 6N2 socket, turned it on, popped on the headphones........Whey Hey ...Rock on Jimmy! I felt like Doctor Frankenstein or Franken-----Steen. Amazing. I can confirm the Jemosa 6LS7 to 6N2 adapter-converter works perfectly and allows you to use Psvane Art Series 6LS7 in the XDUOO TA-66 6N2 socket. I'm getting excellent sound from these tubes. This opens the door for many people who want to tube roll on the TA-66 :) Aesthesics is good too, two large tubes looks better on the eyes, than the generic 6N2 tube, reminds me of a little chipmunk sticking it's head out of golf hole. I've listen to it for only half an hour on my TA-66 and the sound emitting from the Psvane 6SL7 (6SN7) Art Series tube is beautiful. It does require some burning in of course. The Jemosa 6LS7 to 6N2 adapter-converter does what it says on the label. Impressions so far: Silent background More detail Wider sound stage More natural ambience. A little brighter than the generic 6N2 but I think the tube needs to settle and burn in properly. My thoughts: I won't say this has made the sound of the TA-66 double as good but it has improved the sound greatly and for £90 for the cost of Psvane tube, I'd say it's well worth the investment. Final thoughts: Don't waste your time on 12AX7 tube rolling, this is the real deal!

Given that the point to point wiring is just simple metal, doesn’t that imply that any investment in high end cables is worthless? In fact it made me think that in general even printed circuit board interconnect is just copper so how can high end cabling at the end of this chain make a difference? And yet there are many people on places like Head Fi who genuinely believe their nice cables do alter the sound. Thoughts?
@PassionforSound4 ай бұрын
It can seem contradictory for sure, but the final wire that runs to the speakers /headphones / earphones has influence too over things like the degree to which very small signal fluctuations are transmitted and the timing coherency of the signal which is important too. The internal wiring of the devices also matter and it's why higher priced gear often (but not always) sounds better - because the quality of internal components and circuit boards/wiring is better.

More direct wiring paths? The electrical circuit design of point-to-point wiring is not different than using a circuit board, unless they are two different amplifier designs. There "may" be other advantages, but often in a simple circuit like this is often less complicated to use point to point wiring, just like is used in many simple speaker crossovers.
@jaybrodnax4 ай бұрын
Does the size of the "wire" matter? If find it kind of amazing how small tiny traces work, especially when people talk up the benefits of better power cables and headphone cables
@Mark-rw3kw4 ай бұрын
@@jaybrodnax Yes, that is a contradiction. But large cables generate a lot of revenue and a talking about them generates a lot KZbin views and ad revenue. I noticed in this amp, the point-to-point wiring doesn't appear to be copper (and not likely silver), and it is not shielded. Looking at the inside of the amp, it looks like the point-to-point wiring is probably the easiest and cheapest solution for such a simple tube design.
@PassionforSound4 ай бұрын
Traces in circuit boards are also not shielded. The wires in the TA-66 appear to be silver-plated copper. Also, by going point-to-point, each wire can take the most direct possible route to the next component. This reduces the length of the pathways which will improve the circuit by reducing the filtering effects that ALL wiring/traces have on the signal. Less wire/trace equals less filtering equals more transparent circuit.
@Mark-rw3kw4 ай бұрын
@@PassionforSound I maintain that you could not hear the difference (in a blind test) if this amp had a well designed printed circuit board (PCB) vs point to point wiring. Properly designed using copper, a PCB can perform just as well as a point-to-point wiring in an amp. But for a tube design this simple it doesn't need a PCB, and using one would make it harder or more costly to build and harder to do revisions. Also, it appears that a lot of so-called point to point wiring in this amp is going to the output and inputs, which would usually be point to point even if using a PCB.

I recall seeing on a forum that the amp hums until the front tube has been properly burned in. I can confirm that tube burn-in removes the hum through headphones. However, I'm still hearing the hum through my speakers even after 50+ hrs of burn in. The hum is only present when no music is playing. Does anyone else have this issue? Great headphone amp otherwise.
@0rogontorogon4 ай бұрын
Thats correct, tubes require some "burn-in" before they reach peak performance. My guess is that your speakers have a far lower impedance than your headphones do. In my experience preamp tubes are a bit of a lottery regarding hum and/or microphonics. If one hums after completing break in time it will likely hum for the rest of its life. If it annoys you, replace the tube and hope for the best.
