This week, a blood bath went down at the 2022 Russian Figure Skating Championships. Eteri Tutberidze came to dominate the event, yet the crowd booed the scoring of Diana Davis and Gleb Smolkin and was on the side of Elizaveta Tuktamysheva. While Kamila Valieva, Alexandra Trusova and Anna Shcherbakova may be the Olympic Team, was it too much for the public to stomach? Tamara Moskvina's teams of Mishina and Galliamov and Boikova and Kozlovskii defeated Tarasova and Morozov and raised new questions about Russia's strategic in the team event at the 2022 Olympic Games. What about Mikhail Kolyada and Mark Kondratiuk? And is Adelia Petrosyan the future of Team Tutberidze? Why was Sofia Muravieva's score lowered? We break it all down and more of the latest edition of 'This and That.

My highlight was actually Sofia Samodelkina. And Sasha. Trusova has this stubborn maximalist energy when it comes to the athletic part of skating. Adrenalin rush that you do not get from other skaters, which is why people myself included root for her with the flaws in choreo, artistry and inconsistencies. To me, this makes it what it is, a sport. It may be non-perfect but is guaranteed to be exciting and not boring. She is also does not have this “good girl”cheesiness or diva syndrome that many Tut girls have, and seems to have 0 interest in media attention overall.

I also but can’t help but rooting for Trusova despite her lack of actual skating ability and artistry. She just has this energy about her. She’s going to do the maximum she can athletically no matter what anyone says. She definitely seems to be an independent thinker and has personality. She never seems to be overly upset when she falls. She just goes harder next time. She actually really needed a coach to tell her when enough is enough because this injury may have been avoided. She’s under rotating now, which may improve or not, but I still can’t help but root for her. She’s the opposite of Anna, who at this point just comes across as a pathetic little good girl not understanding that what has happened to her was inevitable and she’s about to be tossed aside like yesterday’s trash. It’s very hard to watch.

Samodelkina is by far the most interesting and with the highest potential of the current juniors (the only one who doesn’t skate like a little kid) - but the version of Habanera is a travesty... it’s like a lounge version of some gimmick starbucks cd trend from 20 years ago, by the time the music changes, the boring backbeat has been going on for some three minutes that feel like thirty; can’t imagine how depressing that program must be if she’d skate it with even one mistake

Yep, both Sofias were underscored esp Samodelkina Who skated early and they gave her 76 with a clean short program with a triple axel and excellent skating and presentation. What a noticed with Diana Davis, her partner is a good dancer and their coach taught them well how to disguise Dianas flaws. Almost everything they do is intended to disguise her flaws as something cool. For example, Gleb drags her around, the lifts they do have more about with Gleb's abilities and she let just him throw her in the air (like a corps), but he is doing a lot of work. The twizzels, yes, they are covering that department well, I guess, but, Diana Davis is nowhere near Anabelle Morozov! 3 random thoughts: - Yes, those never-melting ice-cream burrito things! - I also don't think this is over for Liza, by a long shot. I was strongly getting that "we'll see about this..." vibe from her after the event and yeah she didn't look as upset as I was expecting either. She's experienced enough to know what a farce all of this politicking is and there's a greater than probable chance that 1 or both of Anna/Sasha won't survive Euros. Heck, if poppers couldn't help Anna's LP here, does she really have a chance internationally. - Petrosian intrigues me, both her skating and personality. She was getting scores that she's never seen before and had no business getting, but she looked like she felt she totally deserved them and wasn't even surprised. Future Russian Queen here, I think.

If I was part of the Team event selection team, I would have: Ladies - Valieva, Trusova They have the tech to blow away each segment. Valieva for SP and Trusova for LP. Trusova just needs to land 1 or 2 quads to maintain their 1st place. Don't do anything more. Men's - Mark I don't trust Kolyada so I'm putting Mark on the spot. He just needs to skate clean and be shenanigans-free. I'm gonna assume his placement would be between 3rd-4th. It's an expected loss. Pairs- M/G They are consistent and they provide a good 1st/2nd place buffer to support the ladies' lead. Ice Dance - SinKats and StepBuk Why the shit would you want D/S on any segment when they could basically sink the team to silver? Anything could happen in the team event. I am not risking a 5th/6th segment placement to appease her mom.

Yeah a lot of people in Russia are really mad at Anna's scoring. We are not blind. It's just that we feel we can't do anything about it because the federation doesn't care. I almost feel unpatriotic but I hope there will be an upset at the Olympics and we won't get the whole podium. I feel Kami deserves gold if she is clean or almost clean but hopefully at least the bronze goes somewhere else. It's like they think the viewers are blind or something. They roll out this "competition" for us and then think we won't notice that they have predetermined the results beforehand. At least before we felt an element of uncertainty and competition there. This was just a huge F you to the Russian public. The too close to the sun reference was good. I think we all felt something was off here at these nationals.

Mark was an eye opener in the last year's competition between Alina and Zhenya's teams. He was like a gulp of fresh air, very different from the traditional male Russian classic FS school. Very humble but open and funny, he surprised the crowd by delivering clean Quads last year. Then followed few competitions where he wasn't very good, but he was the one to get the 3rd spot for the Russian team heading to OG. So people have a lot to cheer him for, and call him our 'underground'. A bit like Kosta in my view, but more authentic.

We didn't see any face stickers, a jacket thrown at Eteri or a water bottle thrown in Dani G's direction. The ice dancing was criminal. I felt for Zagorski/Guerreiro as their score were being booed. What? Out of all the girls Liza has the worst base value and no 3-3 combo jumps????? She is the weakest Russian. Maiia outscored her with an 80 in tech. They robbed Maiia by giving Liza 64 base value a 14 point GOE boost and she still lost to Maiia!!!!! They overscored Liza. Anna has 3 triple triple combos. Liza had zero. Is David an actual skater? How does he not know this? Tuk is weak sauce. Kaori Sakomoto can easily beat Liza with no ultra-c. That's how weak Liza is if you remove the 3A. If you remove Anna's 4F she's still unreachable. If you remove tuk's 3A (because she fails on them for the last few years. Underotations in her 3A and bad spins at level 3 most times. It is a miracle this season when she reaches level 4). She is the weakest russian. Even Ksenia S. beat her in the short program but they screwed Ksenia in GOE and PCS. Liza sucks and is over scored. Wakaba can beat her too without a 3A at this point. Liza may be a stronger choice IMO at present than Anna. Sasha, I don’t think she will be going because she brought in the ladies quad revolution etc but because she actually brought the quads when needed, at the right time ( the nationals). She can be chaotic and they don’t like that.

I think it was worth it for Tiffany to perform to gain morale and love points and to highlight the absurdity even more. It was gold seeing Nastya Skoptsova crying for her. Also Khudaiberdieva/Bazin said that all teams work hard and want to compete on fair terms - but some teams get special treatment and it is not their own fault but the ones standing behind them. I don't know what I would do if I was a Russian skater on a high level - possibly consider changing nationality.

These nationals will go down as one of the most dramatic in Russian history ever. And to be honest, the most exciting event for me were the men. I couldn't remember the last time I saw our male skaters really fighting for the spot in the Olympic team. Mark was the highlight of the event - he was soo hungry for the win, very glad he won)). Also how unsurprising - Jesus beat Woland 🤣 I would not ever want to rewatch the dance competition. Not even because of the scoring, but rather because I was so afraid for Tiffany during the free. Hope she gets better. And again big shout out to Max Trankov for making the comment of the year after TM's short 😄😘 Speaking of the team event at the Olympics: Pairs - I would put BK for short, MG for free. This way also gold medals for both pairs and hopefully peace will be established. Dance: I would put Stepanova and Bukin for both, but dahh, Diana and Gleb will be put for sure. Men: Kolyada's errors cost the team gold last time, I don't think they would want to jinx it again. Marc and Zhenya - under pressure they can deliver better. Ladies: Valieva for sure, and who can do more from Anna or Sasha. But I feel that at this point Liza will be there to replace on of them. If I were Eteri, I would have only Trusova and Sherbakova in the team, so that nothing happens to the gem Valieva before the ladies event. And so you could walk away with 3 gold medals)). I bet Eteri is still pissed at Kolyada for fucking up last time and this ruining her students chances to walk away with 3 golds.

With the amount of ladies stars Eteri has in her bank, she should hire a professional to produce a pro circuit for them and make him do all the work while she takes credit for it. Regarding the placement at the Olympics in terms of the judging for the Ladies event... I think we are going to see a similar situation like we saw at the Tokyo games with the rhythmic gymnastics placement. I believe the judges will come together and make sure a sweep doesn't happen to make a statement. Kamilla will get gold barring a disaster. Russia will scope up one of the other placements. But I think we are going to see the judges place one of the Japanese girls in either second or third.

An interesting prediction. I find it unlikely, with Russia having their women going 1-2, if not 1+3. Kaori's content is not near high enough, while Wakaba needs to have 3 3As in her programs to even get 3rd place. You Young is not really a contender, even with her 3A, which she tends to fall on now; like Wakaba, she'd need 3 3As fully rotated and landed to be considered in 3rd place.
@1chienandalou
@1chienandalou 2 жыл бұрын
Wakaba has the best programs, and she’s been skating her heart out and her triple axle has been mostly successful. I so hope she’s on at the Olympics and gives the judges an opportunity. Andre Mozalev is my favorite Russian male skater. The FS he did last year -- "The Man With The Harmonica" -- was by far the most interesting of all of the mens' FS. He had three or four good showings. Unfortunately, he had a poor showing at nations and landed in 4th place. He also did quite well during this years grand prix. To me under normal circumstances, it's not a logical decision for RSF to have done what they did to a point where it could actually risk their Olympics results. I can't see Anna especially getting to the Olympics and giving an Olympic level performance. Either this is done so for the national audience as a face saving exercise for Anna and Eteri on paper and Anna will pull out by Olympics anyway. Or they are working around the international judges to the point they think they can get away with it (so it's who cares who domestically gets chosen). Or RSF has little choice because Eteri holds their gold medal in Kamila and Eteri demands her podium sweep. Who knows for sure but it seems even Russian fans of the sport are getting openly sick of it now that they are seeing Eteri bonus affecting their sport domestically. As an aside, I haven't seen it talked about yet but I read about Eteri's interview that Eteri was saying she pushed Diana to do ice dance because she thought Diana was going to be too tall and lose her jumps? Wow was that telling. One standard for her daughter, another for the other girls.

Eteri's juniors and novice skaters are now being beaten nationally and internationally by skaters from plushenko's camp. Cracks are starting to form in her rule over womens skating. This explains why she is using her influence now in other categories (using her influence to power her narrative in media and ice dance). She's realizing that putting her eggs in one basket isn't going to be as effective anymore. The russian public is also slowly turning against her too now after that stunt she pulled for diana.

Zhenia is naturally talented for tv. Imo Alina would be much happier just living her life, but she needs to be in the spotlight to keep making money from shows, ads... I mean... she's not wrong to take advantage of the opportunities now. To me, doesnt look like she really chose to be a TV host, probably eteri got the spot and said "now that's what you're going to do". I hope she can improve over time or at least get more comfortable. She gives me the impression that she's always a little anxious / tense when she's in front of the cameras

If I were Alina I'd become a full-time social media influencer. She should start a KZbin channel, make travel, fitness, beauty vlogs, videos about her pets etc. with lot of sponsorships of course. I'd hire a professional to help with the filming and editing, add Japanese and English subtitles. Plus more content on IG and TikTok. I think she'd be more comfortable with that compared to the TV and ice show stuff.

I’m thinking Maya will stay with Eteri. She could do what Sofia Samodurova did in 18-19 and be the surprise Russian star, especially if Anna and/or Trusova retire or take a year off. For Elizaveta, I don’t think she’s done… yet. I think if Anna or Sasha falter at Europeans, their spot could be in danger. And if Liza is going to get spicy on Instagram, I would say start with a 4T/3A+3T. Then progressively show more difficult quads or combos from there. For Eteri’s empire, if Diana/Gleb and Tarasova/Morozov struggle at the Olympics, how does that reflect on her? Would she continue to venture out or stay where she is most dominant? Pending a successful recovery, could Daria be a potential star in the pairs event?

You brought up a really interesting discussion for the Team Event. Russia has a great chance and so many options, almost too many. But they're a little vulnerable everywhere. Personally - I say keep Kolyada in both. He's not the jump popper he was 4 years ago. And if he pops and loses it for the team, well, tbh they would've lost with any other man (Mark and Evgeni haven't scored well internationally). Give Trusova the short (let her sponsors reward her for an OGM, Eteri will enjoy all that 40% royalty, and rest/protect her by not doing the free. Take the 3A out, score a 77 like she did at Skate America, that'll be enough to overtake Kaori who internationally seems to have been capped at 76 in the SP.), and Kamila the free (she looks generally healthy to handle 3 Olympic performances. Exactly like Zagitova!). Mishina and Galliamov for both, and then it HAS TO BE Sinitsina/Katsalapov for the short (I don't think Team Russia can risk losing so many points in both the rhythm and free dance if it were Stepanova/Bukin in the rhythm dance) and since Eteri already paid for it, Diana/Gleb are the only sure things in the free dance.

I agree, Russia will won’t win in the men’s anyways no matter who they put so kolyada IF he skates clean can score the most points for Russia. I agree with the dance and the ladies but I think for the pairs, tarasova and morozov should do their short, and Mishima and galliamov their free. I KNOW I SOUND CRAZY BUT HEAR ME OUT. Their short program is really beautiful and they have the best elements out of all the 3 Russian pairs. No one can do what they do like them. So just pray pray and pray to god they skate clean and they can easily go above 80 maybe even get an 82 ( like they got at peyongchang ) to ensure the top spot. Plus in the short program they have a shorter time to screw up so just hold your breath for 2:50 and hope they don’t mess up. Then M/G do their free only because they are such a young team who don’t have the experience that T/M do so they could crumble under Olympic pressure which is more pressure than they have ever experienced. Like yulia did in Sochi. She was pretty consistent and nailed both the short and free in the team event then cracked in the individual because of all the pressure and attention that she wasn’t used to. T/M have been to the Olympics before and they performed their sp in the team event and the pairs event PERFECTLY so at least they have the experience. If they do well in the team but blow up in the pairs event it won’t really matter because Russia has M/G and B/K to get 2 medals but if M/G do both portions of the team event then crack under pressure and fail in the pairs, then all we have to rely on is B/K and T/M to get 2 medals and can we really trust T/M to do a clean short AND long? Also we know dimitri usually gets excited and messes up so we can’t really trust him either so then the Chinese will have an easy gold. At least with M/G if they skate clean which they most likely will they have a CHANCE to beat the chinese. B/K and T/M will throw themselves under the bus

Sasha in the short? It doesn’t use her strengths and it doesn’t even have a triple axel advantage (which she should keep out I agree so why would you put her in the short?) Davis in icedance? Idk.. it’s one thing to give them Olympic experience it’s another to humiliate yourself globally like that. They can compete for how low you can go while being inflated in your scores, or how are you can go without causing a riot in the audience I suppose? I can’t buy them they could end up in the top three considering the competition right now. I guess the only thing I agree is Kolyada here. But Russian figure skating seems to be some weird alternate reality or somebody needs to send me what they’re on lol.

Dave, yes on Sasha’s weak skating in the short. That axel was doomed seconds before takeoff due to lack of speed and from there I kept noticing. I hadn’t thought about that being related to her injury, except in a general sense. And in the free after she finished jumps she kinda phoned it in like in the old days, whereas she had brought some more performance recently. I do kinda wonder about all three of these girls lasting the next several weeks but hoping for the best.

To be fair, Sasha has reportedly only been training for the last month or so. I would (rightfully) anticipate that, with that short amount of time, they would work on restoring "enough" of her quads and "good enough" programs, just to get her through Nationals. I bet we'll see a much improved Sasha at Europeans.

@@biscuitcase83 I don’t think it was about focusing, but rather about him stating that they had a slowness beyond what you’re talking about. Well, I just saw that too. Simple as that.I don’t know why you have to defend her like I said something negative. I just observed some thing. She always focuses on her jumps and we were talking about her short program by the way where she fell on her triple axle and the rest are triples that are not problem for Sasha anyway Unless she loses mental focus which was not the issue...Again, I kind of don’t understand why people have to come to the defense of Sacha anytime she’s mentioned. She’s one of my favorites and I’m not gonna be dragged into some sort of argument. It was about a specific comment in the video.

I just saw her performance and my gosh. No offence to her I love her but if I didn’t know anything about skating and who she was, I would never believe that is the same girl who won the Olympics 4 years ago. I just find it hilarious how recently in an interview she said she never announced her retirement and she’s still on a “pause” GIRL😭😭😭😭😭do you really think we believe you’re going to come back when you’re skating like this. But it really is so scary. I couldn’t even recognise it was her because the skating was so bad. Not just the jumps but the actual skating. She looked so slow and was so hunched over. Someone like YUNA ( like you mentioned ) lashed 2 Olympics and she skated in a show in 2019 and still had skating skills of high quality ( although I don’t think she performed any jumps ) her skating was still just as good as when she retired 7 YEARS AGO. AND SHES 30. Alina is still a teenager and she can’t even skate anymore
@1chienandalou
@1chienandalou 2 жыл бұрын
Katarina Witt came back after she retired and even competed at the famous Tonya/Nancy Olympics! I think she may have been in her 30s then. She didn’t medal but she held her own.. I definitely saw her skate in her 30s on stars on ice. The way Alina looks on ice, it looks like she just never skates. Someone who practices all the time, with their career “on pause“ wouldn’t look that rusty indeed. (Minor detail but her posture was always a weak point, and not surprised about it because every time I take a break and my posture goes to a mess too, it seems to always decline in quality somehow). Eteri was saying in some interview how she pushed her body to the limits around the Olympics training hard. Maybe she just had enough of skating after that. Kinda sad but I always have the sense she is done with the whole thing.

@@toxic-low-key-ghost7934 I think the reason is because of her posture and her basic SS was built when she was still developing. When she became an adult, mature women body, ET does not improve on her SS anymore. It's normal that you have to relearn technique and skating when your body change, cause you know you become taller your central of gravity change. In Zagitova's case no one has interest to fix her skating hence what you saw in the gala.
