For everyone who is interested in the context, the truth is that it’s not very much about the age like 90s 2000s or the mentality. Ghost stories sub is far different from the dub. The sub is an actual serious story. The dub version is official but the cast was drunk while recording. The story was such a flop in japan so when this anime came to usa they told the cast to say whatever they wanted to 😂

It didn't necessarily flop in Japan. It did pretty ok, but they thought its too deep in oriental culture to adapt completely for the western audience, so they said "Do as you will, as long as it follows the plot in a way"
