If you just take the baseball bat with the knock back, and maybe the extra proj skill, you're pretty much untouchable - think it's bugged cause the explosions also scale with more projectiles and the knockback

This is true! The more projectiles the more explosions which means more damage

From what I've seen the best upgrades across the board are more projectiles and the increased speed/damage within 5/4/3m ones. They make most of the weapons busted, especially sword and bat. Still not a fan of the boomerang though.
