Very interesting how small issues go to small pieces like small logical port in a TTL chip. Really not small things but you transmit simplicity and shows link between both of them, really nice how to discover effect of a really simple piece of broken electronic.

The "Disk Drive ][" is so simple but so effective. If you compare with the 1541 from Commodore it blows your mind, that was a mini-computer in a case! The "slicing carrots" noise it makes is part of my memory of a little kid! :)

Very nice video Tony. It caught my attention to see the way you tested the 2316 via the adapter. Cool !!!!

Thank you! I am surprised that those programmers don't have a built-in way to do so - even though I understand the 2316 could be configured in different ways by the manufacturer. Still, I was too curious to see which one was bad! Thanks for watching!

Though the time is slim between the Apple IIs There are 2 Euro Plus. The older one requires that Pal Card, the newer one does not. See Noel's Retro Lab on this as he repairs color on a Newer Euro Plus machine and it did not have a card.

If address line 15 is constantly high, simply flash the whole contents into the second half of the chip, keeping the first one clear.
@tony359
@tony359 7 ай бұрын
I thought I did that - even though the first half wasn’t clear but a mirror copy. 🤷‍♂️ I clearly must have made a mistake there!
@MrVipeg
@MrVipeg 7 ай бұрын
@@tony359 Actually, there's no difference what first half of flash contains. Mirror copy there is fine. BTW, you could buy a modern replacement for 27C256: Winbond's 27E257, which is EEPROM. It can make flashing/reflashing so much easier.

So the floppy controller was being recognized on 4 5 6 7 as I understand your video. I wonder what would have happened had you plugged the controller card into slot 0 1 2 3 from the beginning? Would it have auto started? If it did, this fault could have gone unnoticed? Nice work!
@tony359
@tony359 7 ай бұрын
ah good question. I might have not tested that combination - but some software on the Apple II expects the controller in slot 6 (it's hardcoded in the program) so I feel it would have been an issue anyways. Thanks for watching!

Hmm not sure why the diagnostic ROM didn't work right. You used the BIN file from the releases section? (You mentioned you compiled it)
@drgiller
@drgiller 7 ай бұрын
Tony, did I understand you say that it worked correctly on the IIe? I'm at a loss. It looks like the erase and print routines aren't working at all, but the test routine is (and those beep codes were saying no RAM errors were found). We definitely didn't try it on a Europlus but I can't find any reason that would change the behavior. Thanks for trying it out... sorry it didn't work properly for you!

@drgiller - yes I tested it on my //e simply because I wanted to make sure I compiled it ok and it worked, I was aware it’s not tested on that machine but it worked for me. Thank you for making that diagnostic!! It’s going to be super useful in any future project! Even with no summary screen it helped a lot anyways!

@@tony359 We hadn't tested it on the //e but others have and it does seem to work as is (but only tests the lower 48K). I'm just baffled that it worked on your //e (meaning your copy/ROM is good) but behaved so strangely on the europlus. I wonder if it does that on any europlus, and just don't know what would be different. Your feedback is very appreciated and I like your video!

I tested on my //e because I wasn't sure where the ROM had to be saved on my "Rom Replacement" so I copied it multiple time over the ROM chip (a 27C512 I think) until I filled it up :) I remember seeing the summary screen and seeing the RAM test being done. I'd be very happy to help on this, if there are any tests you'd like me to do on the Europlus please do let me know. You can also reach me via Email, the address is on my profile. The TL866 has been superseded by the T48. It's inexpensive, I'd go with the T48 if you don't have one. The TL866 is also still very capable but make sure you don't pay it the full price! :) I've recently upgraded to a T48.

@tony359 3 ай бұрын
it's called XGPro, it comes with the machine (you can download it online). Mind you, I hear there are many copycats online. Which also seem to be working fine. However, the T48 can be purchased directly from the manufacturer at a reasonable price. Good luck! :)
