A strange thing about this is that it's also a way of flood mitigation. The problem with both flood and some kinds of drought is that the water flows away. This is bad for droughts because they need the water to stay around, it's also bad for floods because it tend to all happen at the same time during rains and all that water gathers together as a flood. The techniques for mitigating floods, like catchment areas of ponds vegetation etc, work by stopping the water flowing away, and holding it in place, giving it time to infiltrate and percolate through the earth. Not only does it hold the water on the surface for use, and watering vegetation, it also helps replenish the underground water table. So it's logical that these same techniques can be used in drought areas.

This is the most important knowledge our species has. The fire might have given us progress, but without water, we cannot live.

I'm *trying* to turn our property into a Regenerative Food Forest and utilize these methods. Were we live is basically beach sand but without the ocean. It's darn near impossible to build up actual soil and I used all the different methods (Hugelkultur, Terra Preta etc.) all together along with bentonite clay and other Ammendments. It's working. I have soil now, I have biological life in that soil like Red Wigglers (I had to buy worms because like I said, there was zero biological life). We now have Butterflies, Bees (all 3 kinds), Dragonflies, Hummingbirds, small reptiles like Anoles who eat the garden pests and at least 20 new species of birds that have made our property their permanent homes. We even have a small population of Lightening Bugs and Bats! I'm not even close to being done but what I have done, is absolutely worth it! I also bury fish under my plants and I don't have to fertilize anything for the entire season.

I wouldn't assume there is a single answer for everywhere. It is well known that Local streams, ponds, lakes, and groundwater, can and do dry up if all the rainwater is diverted. That why it is illegal in many areas.

Has anyone been invited to visit the nearest native communities, to find more knowledge? All my anscestors across the Americas thrived, before we discovered Columbus. He was lost. We were fine before then by respecting Mother Earth, and all Mothers on Earth.

Curb cuts are fine if the property is located on a higher elevation. At lower elevations nearer to the creeks and rivers the water that flows off the streets is more and more likely to carry motor oils and other carcinogenic chemicals. Unless there is already a program in place, in a decade or two Tucson will be needing some public health research into cancer rates and other ailments associated with unmonitored water reuse..

The narrator is pronouncing johad like it is transliterated with an English "d" sound, but as you hear the native pronouncing this word, the "d" spelling for Hindi in this position indicates a sound more closely related to the English "r" sound, line johaR, not johaD.
