In the NRL in Australia the MVP (Dally M Award) is done differently. After every game in the season voters vote for the 5 best players on the field, they then get points for that. Whoever has the most points at the end of the season wins. This means if you don't try or rest/injured you won't get the points for each game a miss out on the award. It's a much better system.
@universe.factory Жыл бұрын
It's a better system but probably easier to pull off round by round then with the NBA - though perhaps if some journalists don't watch most games they shouldn't have a vote anyway
@ChillAutos Жыл бұрын
Afl has a similar system. I cant remember the last controversy due to this system. In the Australian Football League (AFL), the Brownlow Medal is awarded to the player who, provided he has not been suspended during the season, receives the most votes from the umpires for being the fairest and best player in games during the home-and-away season. the Brownlow Medal is the most prestigious award in the AFL just incase anyway was wondering.

It didn’t age poorly, because the arguments are still completely the same and valid. Apart from the fact that the USA came with a B team at best, my German team consisted of various NBA players. NBA champions wouldn’t have lost any 7 game series against any non NBA team on the planet, if somewhat healthy.
@resoluteroly8165 Жыл бұрын

@mrvacepadrva81 Жыл бұрын
@fehCrebO except that the argument was never valid to begin with. The title of world champion isn't something you're given. It's something you earn by beating the world (both on the national and club level). Many people have given great examples from other sports, most notably football and Manchester City. We knew they were the best team on Earth long before they won anything. They still had to go out and do it. Just because the Nuggets would almost certainly win such a competition, doesn't mean they get to crown themselves world champions based on that hypothetical. The main reason you actually have to beat the world is that anything can happen on game day which is exactly what the original comment is referring to hence Jimmy's vid aged like fine milk. He is still a legend though.

I think in the same way it is easy to say rebounds can skew this metric and give big men an advantage, it shouldn't be overlooked how important rebounds are to winning a game. The problem is that currently it's easy to rack up incidental rebounds where the ball practically lands in your hands. If there was a way to measure 'contested rebounds' I think this would still apply some weight to a big part of the game without overly favouring big men.

I think this could work but it would have to be tweaked. This are some ideas, but feel free to add more if you want: -Assists are definetely more difficult to get than rebound so multiplying assists x1.5 would kinda even it out -Using totals makes it so that the stats get affected by how many games the player plays which can make it unfair sometimes, so instead use averages and place a minimum of games played to enter -The stats aren't affected by how much their stats contribute to actually winning so an idea could be to take the win % and substract it from the team numbers This are only some ideas, if you want to add or discuss any feel free to, also sorry for any gramatical errors english is not my first language
@eddiee9147 Жыл бұрын
Somehow squeezing in VORP to show how important each player was to the team winning and the value he had while on AND off the court would be useful
@lgilles Жыл бұрын
I’d imagine you could probably weight some statistics with the average for the league. For assists as the example. Let’s say our data set includes all players who have played an eligible number of games or minutes, whatever arbitrary number it might be. And we find that it’s like 3 assists per game. If you remove whichever player that is being scored from the pool’s average, and assign some value that varies with the difference between player APG and “eligible player” average APG you could probably easily find ways of weighting each stat pretty effectively. You’d both be punished for being far below the average on some things, and be greatly rewarded for being the best at other things. Ideally it’d be hard to be the statistical overall best by only dominating 1 or a small number of categories unless it is by incredible margins. Makes me wonder about what my ideal statistical player would look like. I have never really thought about how to effectively determine which contributions are more or less valuable compared with one another before.

Well, can't say that IBM award is that wrong. Yeah there is some bloopers as DeAndre and Gobert, but aside of that, 8 players out of last 20 years actually won both MVP and IBM. And 6 more players were pretty much a close runner-ups. 70% of matching isn't that bad I guess. I think there is a reason to bring this kind of award back (with the adjusted formula of course)

Great video - one point to make, is that the MVP award has contextually changed over the years. One context being, “the most (best) valuable player in the league (on a winning team)!”, and the other being, “the most valuable player to their (winning) team”. IBMs formula was intending to answer who was, “the most valuable player to their team”, by calculating the players impact above the others + winning record. That’s how you can get a result of Dennis Rodman scoring much higher than Jordan, especially when all of the stat categories looked to be equally valued. Put it another way, IBM’s formula calculated that “Dennis Rodman’s impact to the Pistons winning, was greater than anyone else’s impact to their winning team”. But they weren’t saying, Dennis Rodman is a better player than Michael Jordan. Think about how good bulls still did without Jordan, when Pip+Kukoc took over. Sure, they would never have won a championship, but their record was only a few games down from when they had jordan. Winning is a spectrum. That said, I think their formula was pretty inaccurate/fuzzy for that context, i just think that was their context. With that context, it changes the view of the list. It just depends on what you are trying to answer. In many ways, the lost context is why the MVP conversation is so highly debated. No one really knows what we are trying to answer, are we saying the MVP award should go to; the “best” player? Most valuable to their team or league? Player who’s putting up the best numbers + W record? I’m not playing defense attorney for the IBM award or arguing we should make a static formula for players to game, but the NBA should at least frame the context for the award so we can all have the same debate.

Wait hear me out…… what if we do replace the mvp with an algorithm/AI, BUT at the end of every season the voters will have a vote to decide if they wanna override the machine’s pick or not. We can make the override threshold pretty high (like requiring a 2/3 majority or smth) so that it doesn’t happen everytime, but will happen for the obvious cases like Deandre Jordan for example. As long as we have a good algorithm, and a well-adjusted override system, I think it can help make the MVP race less toxic while maintaining the discussions and human element due to the existence of the override vote.

That formula makes a ton of sense if you take the time to look at it.
