Nice to see a review of a car in a base trim. The cars are so expensive these days! The only downsides is I see is the trunk size, Hyundai i30 hatch has got more room, the other being a no touch screen. The other option is Kia Seltos but it has a CVT transmission.

As a current Mazda 3 owner, I have something to complain about the engine. The 2.0 NA engine and the 6-speed automatic gearbox are highly efficient, but the torque does not satisfy the daily use if you drive in a city with many hill roads, such as Brisbane. When climbing onto the hill, you would loose your speed which forces you to press the accelerator harder, more fuel is used as a result of that. Compared to Golf MK7, the DSG gearbox is more fuel efficient, and the Turbocharged engine is also more punchy, making it easier to maintain the speed of climbing a hill without pressing too much accelerator.

Note to self. I should have purchased the 2.5 litre engine. I got the G20 touring in 2023. Just lacks the grunt. I would think I purchased luxury if I had that engine. Otherwise I like the car. If I was looking at the CX-30 id probably go the next model up, Just a personal preference. But the one thing I must say is regarding the Mazda 6 speed gearbox, and it's changing sequences. I bought a CX-3 Back when that car was enjoying it's first year on the market and initially I was wrapped in it. But then it's auto gearbox started to not perform to well. Over revving when barely accelerating and when I go to give it a bit more chilli it over reves and barely moves. I addressed it to Mazda and they weren't that helpful which was not amusing. So I'm overall left with a car with a dodgy gearbox or I put myself in debt to get a new car. Sorry for a bit of a rant but this has been my first bad experience with Mazda. Hopefully they have improved the problem. Great review John as always
@philip4193 Жыл бұрын
I've heard similar stories to yours; evidently the dealers can do a re-flash on the transmission software to help with this, and can even dial things in to your specific needs (ie: retarding kick-down sensitivity and setting upshift rev parameters, etc).

I average 7.2l/100km over a similar mix of city and freeway driving. My car has done 5000 km hers 12,000 km. I never knew why until I sat in the car with her. She floors it from stop at lights and round a bouts, and stays on throttle right up to lights before braking hard. I explained to her about the Skyactiv-G engine running on both otto and atkinson cycles using VVT. Otto on heavy loads when being heavy on the throttle tapping into the power, and atkinson on light loads when being gentler on throttle. Otto cycle uses about 30% more fuel. Just goes to show how small changes to the way one drives can have a big influence on fuel economy (all other variables being equal).
