Modding 101, use low tack(like painter's) tape to cover the surface you're about to cut. Helps reduce debris and easy to draw your lines on.

its not just modding 101, just general pro tip when cutting metal. Heck, i do it for anything that i cut with a small cut off wheel
@tomsparks2294 Жыл бұрын
Just curious how would it reduce debris, the tape would reduce debris if it were double sided, the cuttings would stick to that but single sided tape you already have the glue side stuck to the metal, if anything you are increasing the debris as you are cutting more material ie metal and also tape. The reason I use tape when cutting is that marking lines to cut on is easier and if you slip and the cutting wheel jumps out of the cut you may avoid scratchs if they are light enough and don't cut thru the tape.
@jakobvanklinken Жыл бұрын
@@tomsparks2294its more about how much of that debris accumulates to the sides of the cut - that is what produces a shitty edge. When you tape down the material, there is less material jumping out of the cut to the sides, becoming accumulated debris on the sides. The only thing the material can do is is either be taken out of the cut by the blade, or stay under the tape to the sides. So it's not so much about catching stuff thats flying away, but more about keeping it from curling off to the sides to the sides in the first place. Of course because tape is still soft material you still have some amount of debris accumulating around your cut, but this is the idea and it works relatively well.

Personally I don't see how Paul's criticism is an issue at all, unless it's a really small and older small form factor case I don't see the cables not fitting, the cooling is just false advertising and has nothing to do with the approach itself, and as far as compatibility goes would they still not use the same power connectors anyway?

I think one of the issues is going to be the cases - and not just to adopt "a" standard. Right now, I can fit mATX, ATX, maybe "eATX" in the same case. But with the connectors on the back, they'd all need to be cut out in different areas - which means multiple cases for multiple motherboard sizes, not just one that can be used for many (unless they find a way to cluster them all in the back in the same area, which I can see causing other MB design problems.)
@inquisitormuchly3199 Жыл бұрын
This. The main reason why this will not be adopted nor deployed to the masses. Full ATX cases are attractive to many seasoned and new builders because of re-usability and compatibility to smaller boards (M-ATX and M-ITX) should there be a need for one in the future. Heck... the same goes for M-ATX cases for M-ITX use cases. If cut outs for different board sizes are made (for example) on future cases to adopt such standards of having rear connectors, it will affect the structural sturdiness of the internal frame that holds the motherboard - we all know that enthusiast CPU coolers and GPUs aren't getting any lighter. Lastly, building on APE boards will cause for the motherboard to bend more when installing CPU blocks and memory - the connectors just sticks out. Whereas, the current standard still bends mobos but not THAT much.
@GonePh1shing Жыл бұрын
Yep, this needs to be rolled into a new ATX revision if it's going to see wide adoption.
@MsDestroyer900 Жыл бұрын
I think it could be reasonable to have the holes be cutouts like with those metal GPU strips at the back of most cases. Then you can push them out as needed for the mobo you're going to use.
@coopercummings8370 Жыл бұрын
@@inquisitormuchly3199 I don't expext that to be a major issue, mATX is the same width as ATX, the board is just shorter, but the power connectors are never on the bottom anyways, so that doesn't really affect much of anything. If they put holes along the bottom edge of where an m-atx board would go for front panel, usb, etc. it would be covered when an ATX board is used, and there are already holes along the bottom edge of where an ATX board goes so that doesn't really change things. It would make it so if you put an itx board in a full atx case there are some additional unsightly holes visible, but how many people are actually putting itx boards in full atx cases and care about appearance anyways? You pay a premium for the ITX board and you lose out on a lot of features and connectivity vs matx or atx, so you probably aren't buying an itx board unless you are going to put it in an itx case anyways.
@SianaGearz Жыл бұрын
I think there's a way around this. You can just standardise a thicker backplate where just about all the material is cut away and only the few bits remain that are needed to hold the standoffs, and the connections between them. The mainboard manufacturer is then free to use all the rest of the area to place connectors where needed.
@dil6969 Жыл бұрын
I think the point we're at currently with cable management is very good. I distinctly remember the nightmare I went through cable managing my OG Antec 900 with a non-modular PSU. These days, most competent mid-tower cases are chocked full of cable management options that make building a clean PC pretty easy. Dealing with the backside takes time if you care, but it's generally only something you do once a year at most. I see way too many compatibility nightmares with this new configuration. Plus, a few cables on the top side has absolutely no meaningful effect on airflow.

What would be MUCH better is if they put all connectors along the edges of the board and have the entire board sit recessed into the tray so the visible tray walls are flush with the board height (hard to standardise that though), hiding all cables without the need for angled adapters OR extra space in the rear. Kind of how they currently do in some cases with the SATA cable area, whereby the right hand side chamber wall is slightly raised so the cables come out sideways rather than straight up, but just extend the walls to butt up to the board edge and set a standardised board height eg 2cm.

The obvious answer is for the mobo backplates to be a standardised "mesh" wide enough to fit all the standoffs. Call it about an inch wide strip both sides of the standoffs. Should be wide enough to maintain its integrity even with cheap stamped and rolled steel. Then, within that area, the connectors can be wherever they like. So can any m2 devices. Call it ATX '23 or something. (I like the idea of using years for versions)

If money were no object, I would update my NAS setup, to max TB size of 4 or 6 bays. User friendly not rack. If CPU/Ram could be updated on it to max. Make it cooled on a laptop cooling tray. Then get a themed desktop, I have a cyberpower laptop and its ok, but I recently started using NAS to run games off of. And well, its a space saver when my Firecuda SSHD died on me. Only 8 yrs to die but it had a good run. The dreams I have. Are huge. I wish money was never a issue. Epic video as always Linus!

So I'm trying to figure out if all they did was install the connectors from the back. In which case you could theoretically do this yourself with any board.

Hard white plastic tubing meant for water cooling would look good to dress that PCIe power cable. You could also bend it U-shaped to have it dump out the bottom/backside of the pipe. Hard to explain in text.

I wish that this was more common. Yes it clearly has downsides, but the biggest upside is that it's so much easier to see all your connectors. Me as someone who sometimes does something with hardware (occasional maintenance, replace cooler, at times build my own PC once every few years), I dread doing anything with cables in that chaotic mess in the front. Now that cooling pads/blocks are becoming more popular, even my tiny fingers have issues reach some cables or plugs. Just give me the backside for all cables. For all I care we go for more square builds where the motherboard is laying flat, but with the PSU+cables below it in a way where you can easily access all off them without having to route them to the front through tiny spaces. and somehow now make them get stuck in anything. Maybe this way cables can become shorter so I don't have half the cable length of what I actually use, requiring less cable management in general. I get why cases and motherboards are the way they are, but perhaps it's time to deviate from the standard "tower" concept with the motherboard being vertical, and make more use of the vertical space, with the bottom being a "maintenance shaft" for the plugs, cables, and all the other stuff you don't want to see.

Im with paul. It was really take a step backwards when it comes to case compatibility and even more cable issues with sockets and bending and not seating.

I am never going to buy a new computer case... or power supply if I can possibly get away with it. I picked up an Antec P-160 case with window back in 2003... yes 20 years ago and still use this same case in my main system. My Creative Labs Inspire 5200 speakers I picked up in 2004. I love these things. I also still use my Antec EarthWatts 650w power supply I bought back in 2008... 15 years ago... the same time I bought my Western Digital 1TB hard drive I still use as my boot drive. I picked up my LG Super-Multi Blue Blu-ray burner back in 2010. I have a newer Ryzen 5 6600, ASRock B550, Radeon 6650XT, 4x4GB DDR4 3200 I picked 5 years ago, a WD 4TB I use for system backups is probably 3 years old, and a WB 1TB NVME gen 3 is likely 1-2 years old. My system is a Frankenstein of old and new parts. I have never formatted the hard drive and re-installed Windows since I bought the drive. I originally ran Windows XP Pro. I upgraded it (not a fresh install) to Windows 7 Pro, and later upgraded it to Windows 10. I have been building my own systems for over 35 years. My first real PC of my own was a 386 SX25, but the first PC my oldest brother bought was a TRS-80 Model 1 back in 1977 when I was 8. Another broth got a TRS-80 Color Computer when I was 11, my oldest brother got a 286 12.5Mhz system when I was 16. But really my first experience with a computer was my dad bringing home (likely around 1974) a teletype machine from work with the printer (no monitor) and a phone coupler. It connected to the main frame at GTE where he worked. He would print out calendrers using character string art and we would play a game called Hunt the Wumpus that was made back in 1973. I did buy a new off the shelf system in 1997... a Cyrix PR200 by ABS and it sucked so bad. I had to format the hard drive and re-install DOS 6.0 and Windows 3.1 about every 6 months. It was slow as dirt too. It did have a CD-ROM though and a 15" color monitor that did something like 1280 × 1024 resolution. I upgraded it to an AMD K6-2 350Mhz and have been AMD since then. The only retail computer I ever bought after that Cyrix was a laptop made by a subsidiary of Best Buy in 2004. It was an Intel system but more importantly it had an Nvidia GeForce4 MX420 and could run Call of Duty: United Offensive on it fine, a DVD drive, and Windows XP. I think I actually still have it in the basement somewhere. The battery died about 12 years ago.

The biggest issues I see are that expansion is a pain, there's a lot of wasted space, and if this catches on it might fragment the market. But this isn't a bad idea if everything is purpose-built.

The case I use unfortunately could never be modified to fit a motherboard like that as there is another motherboard on the other side of the main motherboard as it's a dual Jumbo motherboard case from Thermaltake. The biggest roadblock is to get both motherboard makers and case makers on board and standardize a layout but that could be difficult when you have very different size motherboards out there and can't always just put all the connectors on the opposite side. I do like the concept.

There are a lot background story about this motherboard, aside from It's aesthetic and easy to do cable management: Chinese buyers attends to buy pre-builds from online shops (online market are individual shop based instead of goods based like Amazon) Ancient Ape have a pretty big shop in the market and he is a big streamer so he can convince case & board manufacture (like Asus msi and SAMA) to produce such thing, it will be highlighted in his store and in his vids, sells will be at least 30K or so, btw the price are about the same with normal mATX board or case mATX and the case have around 70% share on DIY market in China, only volume like this can back such a starter, other boards like YTX may come out if this sells good. And if reaction is good, other manufacture will naturally follow the standard. The board was his dream to create a cable-less computer, this are the best result for an individual can do.

It does look clean but it looks kinda dull now. I saw another comment to make hardline wiring and honestly I would like to see that. Why would you want to hide your water cooling? Make the wires similar to the cooling and that would hopefully look good!

Again a great video! for the Power of the videocard i really liked the solution of asus's hidden connector concept where they put the power connector behind the pci-e connector on the card and motherboard!! really love to see a combination of this becomming a standard

I am just waiting for CASES to have all the power conduits built in and MBs just plug into them. The only cables you will need would be for things like GPUs. If the board makers can decided on a standard layout we could be seeing DIY PC building be easier than ever.

only change to the build i would suggest is getting the 90 degree adapters for all the connectors so that you can do them a bit more flush. should make cable management a bit easier.
