The Spring Beauty Miner Bee (Andrena erigeniae) is a native pollen specialist bee that feeds on the pollen of Virginia Spring Beauty (Claytonia virginica). A beautiful spring ephemeral plant which typically grows in wooded areas or more open grassy areas, this adaptable plant is great for your landscape.
It was exciting to see this bee in person for the first time! When we say "save the bees", these are the ones we should be focusing on!

I planted a bunch of native wildflowers last summer and now I have all kinds of ground nesting bees! I've neve been aware of these bees before but now I love them! Leave open ground for them to nest.

I just noticed these flowers in my yard in northern DE this year and wondered about them, so you have no idea how happy your video made me! Thank you for all your great info!

That’s so awesome! Glad they showed up in your yard. My friend’s property is absolutely covered with them, so they let me dig up some plants for my yard last year. They came back and are doing so well this spring!

I was kinda shocked and disappointed when I learned that the honey bee we know and love is actually the "European Honey Bee" and isn't native to North America.

Me too, I feel like no one knows that the one bee they think of is European here in the US and that save the bees does not mean that bee.. it's the others that really need our help

We can all encourage our local governments to plant more natives and nativars as well as encourage rights of way to be seeded with native wildflowers. If we lose our native pollinators and insects, we also lose our songbirds as these insects are important sources of food for birds.

I dont think spring beauty is on the radar of most native plant enthusiasts, definitely worth a change. I remember seeing them in yards once in a while (ones converted from forest) growing up ... not anymore. People bulldoze first and ask questions later. :(

Many plants are a necessity for many species of native bees, mainly plants that grow one year, die off and leave old canes behind and grow more stems. These stems hollow out and create ideal nurseries for many bees and wasps. Youve seen this in action if youve ever seen mud crammed into a hole in an item, like a screwhole on things like leafblowers

I doubt Spring Beauties are available commercially. Spring Beauties, while perennial plants, are ephemeral with a short growing period in early spring. They spend the rest of the year if dormant bullets underground.

They're available, but you have to order them from specialist growers online like Prairie Moon Nursery. The Mt.Cuba Center has popularized them a good bit, so the demand for Spring Beauties is growing.

In a way. Honey bees are "pollen hogs" - they take a lot of it and of many kinds (not specialists).

Hey man- I still think about this video 3 months since I first saw it and I just came across it once again. How do I figure out what species of flowers/plants my native bee populations depend on so I can plant them in my yard to remove most of my grass?

Jarrod Fowler's website is a tremendous resource. It lists a lot of native specialist bees and their host plants. On his homepage, scroll down to the publications section, and look for your region of the US: jarrodfowler.com/
