For some reason I find "old school" math books easier to comprehend. I would love to see more of those.

It’s the way they are structured, the depth of material they cover, and how they explain the theorems and present and solve the problems which makes them so great to learn from. Not necessarily that they dumbed down the material, but unlike modern textbooks which contain a lot of fluff and hardly focus on the explanations themselves and more on the visuals, old school textbooks were just more comprehensive and easier to digest/focus on. Understanding is often key in mathematics I would say, which a good explanation and great examples can often do the trick.

Prior to Carr’s synopsis, Ramanujan had devoured S.L. Loney. He also studied Edward’s Differential Calculus and Hardy’s “Orders of Infinity” besides Benjamin’s text on Integral calculus. These books were studied by him while in India prior to leaving for England.

@@TheMathSorcerer Your welcome! Check out Vance. It is the book I used to self taught myself algebra when I was 12. It is proof based and some of the topics come from abs algebra and analysis. I think it is good for serious precalc students Kuratowski is also amazing. It is proof based and might be a great introduction to analysis. His book were the standards for maths back in the days. Coddington is a hard one. It only focused on the THEORY. At least you have exposed to analysis because Coddington assumed you know lebesgue integral and some theorem from complex analysis. Those 3 are unique hard books in elementary college mathematics.

Honestly a LOT of the examples used are fallacies (especially the "one guy getting confused" section). While it's easy to dismiss them, they are very important when it comes to knowledge. Debating that knowledge often comes from these fallacies. Such as if blank is true, then this is true. It's very fascinating when looking at the communication and knowledge angle (the white horse example is a personal favorite of mine. I recommend looking up the history.)

Nah that’s just the best way to learn. It’s insane to me that math is the assumption that we’re “finding” solutions. Solutions literally always exist regardless of time/space/conditions, they’re a priori to us “finding” them. I’m way more curious about how the solutions are able to be found out rather than being presented a conditional problem for a specific rule, arithmetic, or algebra. Math education is redundant and almost arbitrary as long as we present conditional problems without assuming a prior solution to the problem or method.

In fact, Namagiri - a goddess of India - gave Ramanuja the truly advanced expressions while he slept or in deep trance, which is why he had issues later trying to prove it. Before you scoff, these deities do indeed exist, and can transmit their knowledge to their devotees, when appropriate. It's a fact. "The total number of minds in the universe is one." Schrödinger also stated that “consciousness cannot be accounted for in physical terms. For consciousness is absolutely fundamental. It cannot be accounted for in terms of anything else”. This view came from The Bhagavad Gita, when Krishna tells of the involution of the material universe. This is ancient wisdom.
