He didn’t “spend all his time” checking on whether or not he was late. You dial a number, or check a time sheet which takes 2 seconds, and he most likely only even did that a couple of times, because he fired him so he wouldn’t have to waste any more time on it whatsoever.

My dad had a rule that if his managers decided to fire anyone or someone on their team quit, the manager had to do their job until there was a trained replacement. It was 100% enforced. Effectively cut out the petty firing.

@@fdm2155 Fact is, literally nobody is that valuable. People disappear every day, whether because they quit or are terminated. The company picks up and moves on almost immediately. No, they don’t waste time caring about what they may have lost.Their focus is on either refilling the position or shifting existing positions to cover the work that was done by the person no longer there. It’s a business and people who expect that the boss is going to sit in the corner and cry because they lost a good person need to grow up and have a date with reality.

It’s more that you fired an employee, who you’d spent money and months training up (presumably), and now you’re going to be incredibly short staffed… because he was late twice. In most contracts there’s no obligation to work more hours than it states - meaning the manager likely just gave himself the position of having to cover all of those shifts whilst hiring. It’s incredibly short sighted.

Brakes went out on my car. My boss would pick me up and take me home. He even towed my car to the mechanics to have my brakes repaired. Offered me a loan and said I could pay it back over time but I had enough cash on hand to cover it.

You wanna figure up the cost of that taxi to and from work? It's a better deal to just have several running and maintained vehicles. If one surprises you, just go to the next. Weather isn't cooperating? Try a different vehicle. I've got a vehicle for almost every situation I can reasonably find myself in lol. Because that's what a person who lives in the sticks does. Prepare for problems. It's a costly lifestyle but it assures reliability.

I once worked for a company that gave people points (for lateness and sickness but for all sorts of reasons ) once you reached a certain level of points you was out but the problem was their was no wat to get rid of the points so eventually everyone would end up getting too many points and then get sacked what ended up happening as soon as people reached about 50% of their point quota they started looking for a new job and then left the company ended up replacing their entire work force over a few years some people reached 50% of the quota before they finished training

As a manager, I was once asked to do a presentation for other managers explaining my next to zero employee turnover. I honestly didn't get it but after some digging around they all had some sort of strike system where they fired and disciplined people like that. I ran a very tight ship but I've always recognized that life happens outside of work and treated people like people. To me it was just natural it never occurred to me to fire a good employee because he was 5 minutes late for the 3rd time that year but company wide I was an anomaly.

A proper Bradford Scale should operate on a rolling 12 months and only be used as a guide to identify issues such as persistent absence! Follow up should include finding out why and seeing if accommodation can be made! It should never be X number of strikes and out!

i had a former coworker that honestly did need to be fired, but even when she didn't call show up my manager still tried calling her going "Look just tell me what's going on. you're not fired yet, but we need to know" it was nicer than she deserved (this coworker asked for time off, the person doing the schedule just didn't put her name on the schedule for the week and she assumed it meant she was fired...she wasn't. someone was just lazy doing the schedule)

The car I was using (had borrowed it from a friend) broke down on my way to work on my second day at one job. I phoned in and apologised. I was supposed to be getting training. I was about half a day late. Everyone was super chilled out about it and told me not to worry as it wasn’t anything I could have expected.

My son worked at a big brand store and had to take some unexpected time off while his dad was dying. They gave him points because he had to call in the weekend his dad passed away. You get so many points and you are fired. One day he thought he was working an 8hr shift and took an hour lunch but was actually working a 7 hr shift and should have taken a half hour lunch. His manager said that would probably be 2 points and he knew that would put him over so he quit. They freaked because they didn't have anyone so they told him they wouldn't give him the points but he decided to still quit. Lessons learned for that manager. Dumb asses!!!

At a job where I worked for ten years, a former colleague became my boss. Funnily enough, he transformed into a mini Hitler obsessed with control. He started harassing people ,me included, to a point where I sought legal advice. That scared him. Once I left, for three years I saw ads popping up searching for an employee with my exact job description. Eventually he was fired because he had caused the departure of many trusted, good workers.

I got a written warning because I booked the morning off to visit my father in hospital and he died while I was with him. I contacted work to tell them what was going on. I had to stay the whole day to help my family. But I failed to update my holiday record within 5 days, because my father died. So they gave me a written warning. They did the same thing when I attended the funeral home and it overran by one hour. We parted company not long after that and the day I left was extraordinary, it was like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. Nobody needs to work for toxic companies and people.

OH, my gosh! I wonder if this Matt was the person I was working with. It happened 3 weeks ago, he was fired on a friday, due to "poor work performance" and he showed up late twice that week because he was sick and his car broke down. I AM NOT KIDDING! Like, we all loved this man, he was our hardest worker, and he was given the boot Friday morning at 11:30 am. The people that fired him, they apparently didn't go through HR to fire him, and our HR director is soooo mad about it. Was it that Matt? By the way, the boss that fired him does absolutely nothing and he shows up late everyday and pisses the team off, just about everyday.

I work at a place with a "point system" 12 points, you're gone. Call out is one point, on a holiday its two. Late is a half a point. If you are sick or out for a week, with a doctor note, its one point. Points fall off at the 90 day mark from getting the point. Lots of wiggle room. I am homeless and have no car. I have been at that job for 3 years, no call outs, no points and i have 3 kids that 2 of which have bdays on holidays. No excuses if even i can make it.

I have them at work now. You only statt when you get to log on. Not when you have to scan through the turnstiles or after you walk into the building or after you scan through the gates, after you scan through the door or after you get up on the next floor or after you put all your PED in a locker ofr after you scan through the nedlxt door to then walk the length of the building to get to you desk. Takes about 8-10minutes each way from the first entry point to your desk. If you add the walk from the carpark its now 15 each way. 2025 will be work to rule. If its not in my taskings it wont be done

Matt is better off. I had the best employee that missed her first week of work. She told me their car battery blew up on her husband's face. Now since I didn't know her and we didn't have phones that could send pictures she could only prove it with hospital receipts, but I didn't ask for them, just went by her word. When her husband recovered enough to take care of himself she turned out to be the best employee. Bosses need to realize that life events happen. I once missed a week at a new job as well, I had the Flu two B, was so sick and I did not get fired.
