Dude I bought a rx8 4 months ago that flooded day 2 of having it. Your videos and a few others are the only reason I didn't sell it right after. Love and hate relationship right now but more love then hate and can't wait to have it at 100%
@joeyvega89914 ай бұрын
I heard the primary cause of flooding is either shutting off the engine cold or at a high rmp, shut off the car after it's warm and the idle sits at around 900 rpm. I love my Rx8 rn but yah I'd admit it's a little pain especially if you daily and drive it really hard but it's worth it. Can't wait til he gets the hybrid done I need a reliable source before I swap mine 😂

Looking forward to the results. I'm going to be building 2 RX8 engines. One of them will be hybrid, but I'm going to machine the rotors for RX7 apex seals. Playing with the idea of just cleaning up the stock intakes and using a semi pp approach to better match the flow of the exhaust without needing to bridgeport. In Japan right now but I'll be back home in August to start machining and hopefully starting them in September.

3:30. Actually, there will be more heat on that apex seal due to exhaust flow in that area. That's why the seal eventually warped with Mazda Trix over time. Now, for your short term experiment, you may be good for a little while.
@williamporter74955 ай бұрын
The heat on exhaust ports on renesis is due to 90° exhaust path. Put traditional along side renesis, more flow, less heat. Simple
@rotaryperfection5 ай бұрын
@williamporter7495 You're missing the point. When you add PP exhaust to the shorter Renesis apex seal, you increase the heat on the apex seal itself, with the seal now being exposed to the open exhaust port. Without the PP exhaust, it keeps that shorter apex seal cooler. Now you will releave some of the heat on the side seals, but that heat now goes to the apex seal due to PP exhaust exit. During development, the new 8C range extender in the MX-30, Mazda had a problem with the normal Renesis sized 2mm apex seals warping due to the higher heat from the increased compression ratio. Mazda had to engineer thicker 2.5mm seals to fix the problem. Keep in mind that the 8C doesn't even have PP exhaust.

My question with the hybrid builds is is it worth it? The problem with the Renesis seems to be that the performance ceiling is low at about 400-450hp through forced induction which then severely reduces the reliability. If a hybrid motor can increase the performance and reliability ceiling then it would be worthwhile but if all a hybrid motor does is increase complexity without any gains what's the point? Assuming it can be done, why bother? That's the question that needs to be answered I think.

@rotaryperfection6 ай бұрын
Yea but for how many miles and were you racing? Over the long term, you're still exposing the thinner apex seal to additional heat of the peripheral exhaust port. More heat on the thinner seal, it will eventually warp. This is what Mazda Trix experienced.
@Yorchoice16 ай бұрын
We still testing in the Dino so far. We have not blown it up.
@nobodyspecial50266 ай бұрын
There are two factors 1. The shallower beam on the Renesis apex seal warps much easier. 2. The shallower apex slot in the Renesis rotor wallows out quicker. It was a mistake that Mazda and RX8 owners paid for greatly. A Renesis engine will never sustain 120+ psig compression long term with them. Reusing Renesis rotors with any notable mileage on them is a guarantee to never achieving optimum compression. But in the land of youboob, 30 seconds of attention harlotry = long term success. .

REsurface those housings. Pour oil on them and watch it bead up. pour oil on them after it has been resurfaced, not milled, and the oil will have retention. It's like not honing your cylinders or reusing brake rotors and not resurfacing them. It is even worse because of all the seals in the rotary. I'm not sure why that is a lost art on the rotary community.
@kevinobrien30636 ай бұрын
That a hard one, you would have to try this on a new from factory plate to see how the oil is retained. There is a lot more oil being injected in a rotor engine than a piston one so does it matter. How fast does it take to get to the polished look after lapping . I think the engine runs most of it life on the polish look after break in. If you lap the plates you loose the nitriding so is why the oil in retained.
@Liquorpuss6 ай бұрын
@@kevinobrien3063 The nitride coating is .003-.005 in thickness. Resurfacing takes off .001 or less. Just a lap not a mill. Allows for proper seal break in as well as oil retention which matter on the overall surface wear regardless how much oil is injected. AT what point do the plates become polished in appearance is a good question.

Nobody who knows what they are talking about are saying that the engine won't work. It's simply just not going to magically give you any more horsepower than a good stock renesis engine, and then you lose all driveability because the exhaust port adds a ton of overlap, which the renesis is not designed for. There are NA hybrid builds with dyno graphs out there and they don't get any more power than a fresh stock engine. If you go turbo it will still be just simply worse than a REW motor swap for the same reasons above. Hybrids have no low end torque and you don't get any usable power until you get past like 5500 rpm. I can't wait for you to get to the same conclusion that everyone else does when the engine is running (because it will run, just not how you think). Everytime someone does a hybrid they post a video it running. Then it either disappears from the internet, or they switch to an REW, and there is a good reason for that.
