Not sure if you noticed, but a list of spells fern asks frieren about included: A spell to derust statues and a spell to make grapes sour. The derust in episde 2 for Himmels statue and in episode 3 Eisen says his favorite food is sour grapes.

Although the Japanese prononciation of Eisen from Frieren does sound the same and would be romanized identically it is written with Katakana "アイゼン" as expected of non Japanese words.

The time of Himmels death is used as a staple and turning point for Frieren and her journey! Instead of wandering around Apathetically after his death she is choosing to learn about humans instead of regretting she knew more about her comrades but instead trying her best to learn from their point of view and guidance even after their death almost like they live through her and the memories they had together.

Noticed in the flash back where eisen said "I like sour grapes sourer the better" it all links bro, thats why she got the spell to makes grapes sour , himmel likes flower fields so she got the spell for that, heiter likes to drink so she got the spell to make warm tea in hopes he'll quit drinking alcohol, it all links togather, she's just not showing it.

Welcome to the rabbit hole that is Sousou no Frieren. I hope you really enjoy this anime series! A lot of modern Japanese fantasy is tailored after the Lord of the Rings. Frieren is very Tokeinesque, so Elves are nearly immortal, Dwarves like a few hundred years and humans 70-90 years. Just a few things if no one else has mentioned it; this anime is really about paying attention to little details, as small things make emotional impacts later in series. For instance, the reason why Frieren bought a hair clip that had a butterfly design was because the first time Fern showed Heiter her magic, she made an illusion of glowing butterflies. You DO learn why Frieren has a habit of collecting spells, and it all starts with her master, who is revealed in Episode 4 and you learn way more about her in the penultimate mid-season episode 10. There is a thought that since Preists are the onlky ones who can effectively use holy magic (dispelling and resisting curses, casting blessings and healing) that they are also granted longer lives than normal. It's speculated that Heiter passed away when he was over 100. Every name in Frieren is a German word and they have meaning. There is a school of thought that this whole story is Frieren's reminiscence, since people are named for concepts that encapsulates a memory/impression, rather than normal German names. Frieren - Freezing Himmel - Sky or Heaven - pay attention to the times they show the Sky, as it almost always refers to Himmel or the memory of him Heiter - Jolly - Heiter is shown in future flashbacks as deflecting difficult emotional stress with humour or self-deprecation. Both are Shonen manga that have women mangakas, and both start with loss. Both are praised for it's excellent characterization, emotional intensity and touching sentimentalism. Lastly, the series is named "Sousou no Frieren." While this has often been translated as "Frieren The Slayer" that is INCORRECT. "Sousou no" is the act of "sending off" as in a funeral. So while the manga title may be translated as "Frieren, the Final Farewell to the Dead" since that's more literary, the more exact translation is "Frieren the Undertaker." This has more than one meaning, but the two most common interpretations is that we learn that Elves in Frieren are essentially immortal, so Frieren will eventually "send off" all her non-elven friends. The second meaning is to "see someone off" is also a euphemism for killing and is Frieren is first identified by a demon as the titular character.

good write up. Its stated later that dwarfs live for about 300 years, but Old Man Voll is about 400. I thought Himmel and Heiter were about the same age and Himmel I think passed in his 70s and I think this means Heiter passed around 90+. But its not clear to me how old they were when the started on their question. I figured late 20s.

It's not speculated that Heiter died at over 100 yo but known. When they finished their 10 adventure Heither was in his early 30s. 50 years pass and he meets Frieren again. After this another 20 years pass and Frieren meetd Fern and Heiter. After 4 years of Fern growing and mastering magic he collapses and is bedridden. From here only less than a year pased and he dies. So you have 30+50+ 20+4+1 = aprox 105 years old

I think, what Frieren meant in Episode 4 when she said "It was a MERE 10-years adventure" is different from what she said in Episode 1. In episode 1, I think she meant it in a literal way like it was nothing. In episode 4, I think she meant that their sweet time adventuring together will ONLY take another 10-years, making her feel sad that it's just going to be FUN yet only for a short amount of time.

My take is that they refer to time as "Himmel's passing" because it's in Frieren's perspective. For someone who didn't have any sense of time due to her lifespan, time only started to have meaning when Himmel passed and she realized how important it is

Elf lifespans vary from series to series. Some have them living for several 100 years, others have them be immortal or nearly so. We don't know how long elves can live in this series. Dwarfs can live for about 300 years. I expect human lifespans to be about the same as us. I think Himmel and Heiter are about the same age as they grew up together. I think others worked out that Himmel passed in his 70s and Heiter in his 90s. We know that Frieren is over 1000 but not exactly. She meet Flamme 1000 years ago.

Hi, about English tittle, "Beyond Journey's End", Japanese original tittle is "Sou-sou no Frieren", you see at the opening credit. 1st Kanji-letter; Sou means 'funeral',' burial' and 'to send someone into the grave'. 2nd Kanji-letter means 'to send'. i.e., "Frieren, sending off'er at the funeral" and another meaning is "Frieren, the sender into the grave". which is "the slayer".
