Honestly, this might be one of my favorite albums from the Gorillaz. I love the melancholy feel from most of these songs with Skinny Ape being one of my favorites. I get most people expect high energy "Feel Good Inc/Clint Eastwood" sounding songs, but I'm always happy to hear "Melancholy Hill/The Lost Chord" chill vibes.

I’ve been obsessed with some of the singles. New Gold, Cracker Island, and Skinny Ape are absolute bangers. I enjoy the rest of the album too, I might need to spend a bit more time with it though, I’ve only listened to it once. Possession Island was a beautiful closer. I can’t see it becoming one of my favourite Gorillaz albums, but it’s still a great listen and I’ll come back to it many times. I’m itching for a Song Machine season 2 though…hopefully next year 🤞

The singles kill the experience of the album. We hear the singles so much that when is time to listen to the album we skip the singles that we heard a thousand times and we are left with a few tracks only and the album feels empty. Specially when the album has half of the tracks as singles.

I TOTALLY Agree With you on the fact that this record took a effing long ass time to come out. I’m still scratching my head over that one. I think I heard about it from iTunes early last summer, and I remember my first thought, “ 7 months???? We have to wait 7 months?” My only real interest in was the fact that my ALL TIME FAVORITE ARTIST, STEVIE NICKS is a guest on one of the tracks. And every week I would check iTunes to see if “Oil” would be released early. Sadly no. But OMG! It’s a masterpiece if ever there was one!! As a lifelong fan of Stevie’s, I knew I would love her contribution, but wasn’t sure if I would love the song itself. But it’s AMAZING!! I listened to the rest of the record and really liked it, but “Oil” is BY FAR my favorite song!!! Yes That is Stevie Nicks, THE QUEEN OF ALL THINGS!!! ❤❤❤❤❤

I'm generally impressed by how often Damon manages to impress me every time. This album may be the first one it doesn't deliver what I expected. In terms of narration I'm scared for what is to come. Because the theme trough the album seems to be a seize of will. A defeat from the problems and indifference for what is to come. With 2D stating that he is on the one percent and asking forgiveness because it couldn't deliver on his promises. We may be (I'm serious this time may be real) at the end of Gorillaz and Damon musical career. If you translate lyrics from tormento is the downfall and accepting that defeat, and proclaiming it could do more but chooses to abandon the cause and enjoy love and life. Which explains why we go to more instrumentals and sadder songs after that.

@@ARTV- you just didn't like the album. It's fine. When you get it that this is a pop album through and through (something Gorillaz always avoided doing) you realise how the commentary is set. I like The Now Now but as you said it didn't have any hook that made people relate to it. Cracker Island is about a less than plastic reality. A virtual ideological world where white people (or anyone with a high social status) get stuck into a cult like spiral. We see that in crypto scams, the backlash with nfts and "motivational speakers" that are mostly straight cis gender males. The Now Now was a bit less focused. But every song on Cracker Island is good story. It's just purposefully less varied, therefore Damon sees this as the first pop album for Gorillaz, something which he says he never achieved before. Although I agree with you that Tormenta is really not my cup of tea. It's not a bad song, but it doesn't feel that much of a Gorillaz hit. Something you can bet it was intentional

The title is making me chuckle, I feel bad about it tho, but I can't help it 😭 I would've took that opportunity too tho. Around half of the tracks I really like (sorry, Skinny Ape is underrated), the rest I'm a little meh about. But I'm with you about Tormenta being the worst track on the record, it feels like it should be on a different album entirely. I'd probably give a 7, but that's just my opinion. Bad Bunny is blasted 25/8 where I live so to say I'm sick of his music would be an understatement, and while I knew I wouldn't like his feature in this new Gorillaz albums, what I didn't expect was how low effort the song was on Damon Albarn's part, its a boring, half-assed nothing burger that feels like Damon Albarn just added vocals and the synth melody to a Bad Bunny outtake. And it befuddles me how MILLIONS of people, including so called critics just uncritically eat up whatever Bad Bunny drops.

Tbh ... this may be my least favourite Gorillaz Album (maybe a bit better than the Fall but I didn't listen to that album all that much so I can't really say which is better). Humanz and The Now Now weren't their strongest records but at least they had somewhat of a red line and an idea behind it that made it feel cohesive. CI has the theme of cults and from what I got it tries to compare cult culture with technology and us being addicted to the digital space - at least in some of the songs. Could have been kinda interesting but in reality it sounded like a few synth pop songs that really rarely tried to expand on that. I also get island music vibes from most of the songs which is a nice touch - since we are on Cracker Island - could've also been expanded and experimented on more (even though I'm not the biggest Island music fan but Gorillaz often win me over even if they do some weird shit). This album is alright. There's nothing offensive in the sound of the album, very poppy, very dreamy, kinda kitchy. It's the kind of music you can run in the background and no one is really offended by it. Some may even like it but I doubt someone will be mind blown by this. For me it's a 6/10. Kinda middle of the road with some nice ideas here and there. Kinda sad, was really hyped for this album.

I dunno man, I didn't like it the first time I listened to it... but then I started to actually stop to listen to hits like Baby Queen, Oil, Crocodillaz, Controllah and Possession Island. Even Skinny Little Ape grew on me. Also the singles are outstanding. Silent Running is breath taking and exciting, New Gold is way better than people give it credit, and Cracker Island is just insane in the best Gorillaz way. Nothing beats Demon Days and Plastic Beach. But you can't look at albuns that are mostly perfect and expect the band to maintain this godlike level of quality. Humanz was such a difficult album to make and was mostly in order to make money to refund the band, The Now Now was lackluster but way underrated imo and Cracker Island is a peak perfomance when it comes to this new more poppy phase after plastic beach.

I agree with most of what you say, but as for good music as Zoe makes, the lead is also not really a person you want more in the spotlight, being an alcoholic and drug addict, especially with most of his fans being underaged girls. Just to recall he made a tribute to Gustavo Cerati, and was clearly high and just barely mumbling the words across, not an uncommon thing for artists, but to do that when you're tributing perhaps latin America's most respected artist is pretty distasteful. As well as the idea of "oh I'm latin so I have to apologize for this person being represented" being the most cringe thing ever. Apologize for cartels or something that does actually matter and not just something that isn't your personal preference.

2017- Gorillaz fan here. I agree, this was a bit underwhelming. But I still enjoyed most of it. (Tormenta was the exception, it's so forgettable.)

I actually didn't care for this album compared to the last two. I felt that leaned into a more pop vibe than hip hop vibe. Just not my thing, but hey if ya like it that's all good.

tarantula was actually my favorite song on the album, but hey, to each there own, i also think that tormenta should just be shortened to torment, cuz thats what it is

there are some bangers here, definitely, i ADORE cracker island and have listened to it for hours on repeat. Skinny ape, silent running, and new gold i like too. but overall...this entire album feels almost, one note. Damon didn't push the boundaries on what these genres of music can do. and, really, i feel like that is where Damon shines. he shines when he pushes and keeps pushing tracks to go beyond where anyone can even dream of pushing these types of songs. i like the quiet tone of this album, i like a few songs on this album. but it didnt blow my mind away with these tracks like some tracks from his other albums have done. but idk, i thought this way with other albums too and when i kept listening to them they turned out to be some of my favorite albums from gorllaz. but however, i would say i hate bad bunny's song. its one of the few songs that i have hated from gorllaz (if you don't count the fall, every single song on there i hate). if they had removed that song i don't think any of us would've complained.

kinda disagree with you again I really love this album and it might be an all time favorite Gorillaz album for me. But yes Silent Running is the best and Bad Bunny's and Tarantulla aren't great. I do think you're more accurate on this review than the This Is Why review tho ;)

Demon Days is my favorite album by Gorillaz. Thus album is a "eh" 6/10 for me. It felt too safe for me and didn't do anything to make go "wow!"

Couldn't disagree more. I think Cracker Island and The Now Now are right up there with Plastic Beach. With that being said, I agree. The Bad Bunny track is the worst on the album.

Ironically I like all but one song in the first half (sorry Tired Influencer) and only liked one song (Skinny Ape) in the second half. A lot of the second half feels like they’re kinda just going through the motions until it ends sort of with a thud. It’s not bad but to me there’s only about an EP’s worth of stuff I really dig on it.

Tormenta is probably the worst song ever made by the Gorillaz and Humanz isn't a bad album, there's lots of good tracks, I don't think people ever gave it a chance because of that nail to chalkboard autotuned regae man on satanz barz.

I’m kinda surprised how polarizing this record seems to be for people. For me this album is jam packed with bangers, it’s kind of like a more upbeat version of The Now Now. The grooves on Tarantula, Oil, and Silent Running are absolutely infectious, some of their catchiest tunes ever. Granted, for people looking for more “out there” and “unique” songs from Gorillaz, I’d say Skinny Ape and Tormenta satisfy that criteria. It’s not one of their best records or ambitious records, but for me it’s consistently enjoyable and fun. The lyrics aren’t exactly empty either, I find them to be more substantial than their previous efforts. Tarantula being my favorite, the bass and production on that song goes dummy hard with a super catchy hook. Least favorite is probably Baby Queen, it kinda just sounds like a boring The Now Now B side and a worse version of Sorcererz.

In my opinion the album feels like you mentioned very half-baked and almost like a B-sides, I do agree that they dragged the release for this album for too long, it was one I wasn't really looking forward to tbh, I kind of understood what the album would be once the third single dropped, So I kept my expectations very low, It ended up being better than I expected but gets no better than a 6/10, I'll try to give it another listen but I just feel like after that this album should just be pushed to the side and think of it as a side project, I also believed that the band Inner Wave has done this album but better. The track Cracker Island was a banger tho. Also, I find that the Album title, cover, and even some of the tracks also had little effort into them.
