The people of Karelia were completely Finns, they were evacuated when Russia annexed those areas and in Finland so-called were prepared for Karelia. front-line men's houses and were given land to cultivate, and I emphasize that they were Finns. Stalin was the one who decided to attack Finland.

Karelia is a region in Finland and Russia. Karelians are people from that area, speaking either a dialect of Finnish or a language closely related to Finnish. Soviet Union attacked unprovokedly Finland during WW II and annexed most of the Finnish part of Karelia. The inhabitants, more than 400 000 people, or over 11% of then Finnish population, had to leave at short notice and were evacuated to the remaining part of Finland, leaving their homes, their livelihood and most of their belongings to Russians. Many people also lost their lives during the war.

"The auction" refers to the situation, where Karelians came to the destination where they were placed to, and where the local house-owners came to pick some of them to their houses. It is likely that they picked families, which had older children who could help in the house works, A family which would have many small children wouldn't be as appealing, and therefore the words "five children and their mother were left on the road".
