I love that you keep your palette in the frame so we can see exactly what you do when you go for more paint, it can be so informative and very few watercolor teachers show that part in their lessons. Also, you are very good at describing what you are doing with your brush ~ very specific and detailed thank you so much. Can’t wait to give it a try!

i don't know ... the filbert give you cleaner, sharper lines, but i love the more painterly look of the flowers made with the round brush. each have their purpose. all the results are beautiful either way thank you jenna for the demo.

Us beginners need all the help we can get! So many videos are like 'just paint a stroke like this, so simple' - except it's not simple for beginners, especially ones that aren't naturally artistic! So thanks! I'll try this on the weekend. I especially liked how your gerberas turned out.

I have an old long handle, round Yarka sable that I used for oils a long time ago. It has lost its tip and rounded out to be a very comfortable and much used watercolor brush that is somewhat like a filbert. I love using this brush. I have a smaller Yarka filbert that I bought at the same time as the round. It is useful as well, but a bit too small for general use. Sometimes, sharp tips get in the way. I am sure that everyone has experienced moments when they wished that the brush they were using didn't come to a point! Nice place to visit Jenna!

When I painted in oils for 17 years, and mostly florals, I used a Filbert brush. Doing leaves is also easy. So I went back and use a Filbert brush for petals, particularly daisies, sunflowers, etc.

The filbert brush is my favorite brush because it's so incredibly versatile perdiodt.
@mickeyroth14542 жыл бұрын
If you haven't yet: try starting with the Filbert on it's edge. Then as you press down on the brush, rotate it so it is on the flat side. The stroke can end here or you can rotate back to the side while reducing pressure. Filbert are also good at loading brush with one color then dipping one side ( or corner) in another color.

I took this video as an artist discovering a new tool to aide her in her craft. Much like everyone else when they discovered a tool that made what they did easier. It's an opinion. By sharing this, she's giving a look into how each brush behaves when painting each type of flower, the leaves, and stems. While there are things she still uses a round brush for, there are also ones that she prefers to use the Filbert brush on. Again, it's an opinion. Every creator has their favorite tool(s). Each person will view the art and form their own opinions. That is what art is. Subjective. The meaning, the message, the emotions felt from any artwork is different between each person. That is another reason art is so beautiful. Whether you already knew of this brush or not, this was an informative video providing visuals to what this brush looks like in painting varying petals. For someone like me who is newer to watercolors, I am thankful for videos of this nature, as it provides me with a viewpoint on the different brushes, and aides in my development with watercolors. Thanks again for sharing!

Man when I finally wanted to get back into painting recently I spent a considerable amount of time in Michael’s just figuring out which brushes I should get, searching for some small sets with good variety to save money instead of buying each individually, and I focused mostly on making sure I had a variation of round brush sizes BUT I was particularly drawn a discounted Filbert 10 brush the only one left, and I didn’t want to pass it up, and then when I tested it I was IN LOVE with the effects I got. I can’t believe I haven’t used it since the first test, but I guess it’s because I’ve just been trying to practice with one or two round sizes but this makes me especially want to mess with it again, it’s such a great shape to work with.

I can see the value in using both of the brushes, particularly depending upon what you'd want your flower to look like as regards to one's mood for the painting session - loose and free or a little more controlled and refined. At least I see those attributes in each flower style. Am I taking this too seriously, associating moods with results and style, etc? It rather sounds like it as I reread this! I know what I mean, just having a hard time trying to say it! I think the Filbert is a good little brush with lots of capabilities.

I personally try not to overthink my painting, I just go for it -- whether it's color mixing or brushes I'm using, I just get in the flow state and go for it. That's how I like to paint - I recommend for people to try and let go and just go, but honestly, whatever works for YOU! 😉

Hi Jenna, you could sharpen the end of your filbert brush to emulate the wooden tip end of the rounds. Just either use a stanley knife or stick it in a sharpener. You could varnish it if you were worried about water damage :)

I saw you using a different-looking brush in your 10:1:10 challenge video & was curious. The handle looked a different color (& length) to me, so I wondered if it was a Princeton Neptune. But in this video (which I had to slow waaay down to see), I notice that the brand is Dugato. Something new? Are the bristles still synthetic, like Princeton? Do you like the longer handle? I was going to try a quill for my next new brush, but maybe I'll go with a filbert instead. Thanks for posting Jenna!! :-)
