Mr Grossmann made one for me 3 years ago and it’s great! Its not about it sounds better or worse then IRs. It’s about forging your own tone by yourself with ease and for real. And changing the speaker takes less then a minute! Great to see fatbox on your channel. It deserves more recognition than it had to this day. And check out the OAKBOX - it looks stunning! Cheers from Poland!

Thanks for this Video, Heck Yes!! Been waiting over a year to see someone with a Grossman. 100% agree with you - nothing against IRs, modeling, etc., but there is nothing quite like capturing a microphone moving air in the middle of the night while the kiddos sleep. Excited to see the upcoming speaker shootouts. In addition to any Celestion/Eminence speakers (they're great!), would love to see Jensen (tornado / electric lightning) and others, considering your uniquely great playing style and amps. Thanks again Jon, loved this one!

Love that you bring real speakers into the game. What a cool tool. After figuring out that the tone i was chasing, wasn't too far off what i eventually got together as improvement at first, the youtube world brought speakers to my attention. Last week i shot out four different speakers to settle on 3. A g12t-75 + greenback in a 2x12 and a cramback H for a semi open back 1x12. But the curiosity for speakers is still going. So i'm excited to checkout your shootouts, especially since your sounds are conistently good. I think i like what i've heard here today the most. for now. Could totally be bias too.

I ran the Randall ISO box for a while and it was good but I still had issues with the low frequencies. The attenuation was great, but the resonance of the low frequencies still bothered my apartment neighbors. Even though I didn't run it super loud, I had a hard time getting a quiet setup. I enjoyed using it for recording isolated speakers. I did also change it up slightly after a bit, with some extra sound deadening material inside the sealed cabinet, as well as some on the top lid.

@@SonicDriveStudioThe Redback (in my opinion) really doesn’t impress until it’s cranked hard so this will be a good environment for it. The top end is a bit unpleasant at low to mid volume even after months of breaking it in hard with my Splawn. Once cranked, it smooths out nicely. I really want to get my hands on a neo creamback soon. As much as I love my scumbacks, I think the creamback could give it a run for its money. ..or for more money.

I would love to see a video showcasing Weber speakers. I feel they are very under represented here on KZbin. Like most I tended to use cabinets loaded with celestions of some kind. I transitioned from a gigging musician to recording and music production. After almost 10 years I really missed the crative process of playing in a band. I didn't want to haul my 4x12 back and forth from my studio to rehearsal so I bought a used Avatar 4x12 that had been loaded with 75w ceramic Weber Silver Bells. I was presently surprised at the sound I was able to achieve. The amount of customization that Weber offers is ridiculous. Most speakers are offered in a variety of wattage options, ceramic or alnico magnets, and different construction methods. For such an awesome speaker company I still don't understand why they fly under the radar. I certainly didn't pay them much attention until buying that cabinet.

I think every guitarist goes through a couple of phases, where your gear turns more digital then back to more 'real'. Some do r once, some five times+ 😉. And some end up at 'real', some at digital, most somewhere in between. Funny to see Jon going from modelers to real amps to real cabs 😀. My eldest son sleeps 8ft away with a 5cm wall, but my youngest son sleeps on the same floor with not much more in between. Playing through speakers is out of the question at night , always headphones. Which DOES reduce my joy in playing guitar. For weekends I have a 8" frfr hooked up to an IR loader plugged into my analog rig. Just to control the volume a bit. I guess I just have to wait till im 50 and my kids make more noise at night then i do 😉

IRs do not respond dynamically. That's their downfall IF you are playing/recoring dynamically... Universal Audio says they have addressed that with their OX/Ox Stomp. I use IRs witht the best IR loader out there (Strymon Iridium with amp-sim turned off permanently...) as well as the UA Ox Stomp. I have to give the edge to the Ox Stomp. Now, having said, all of that, I also own a Rivera Silent Sister iso-cab loaded with a made in China Celestion Vintage 30... I tried micing it with various combinations of the celebrities of 'guitar micing world', including the top of the line SM57/R121 combo held together in a purpose built dual-mic holder... Lessons learned: 1. Do not be stupid: you do NOT place a figure-8 mic (the Royer R121) inside an iso-cab. The back side of the Royer R121 ribbon mic picked up the nasally sound of the top portion of the enclosure inside the iso-cab, and there was no EQ solution in the world to remove that... The SPL inside the iso-cab could be a problem for the actual 'ribbon' too - but I controlled for that. 2. Do not be greedy: Those who are fond of that 'distance with mic and speaker to let everything breathe..' conviction - yeah, I hear you but NOT INSIDE AN ISO-CAB!!! All that the distance gives you is the 'gift' of hearing more of the nasally ambience of the enclosure, and less of the speaker's direct sound. If you want the convenience of an iso-cab, you gotta give up that 'breathing' obsession 3. You BETTER LIKE that CLOSE-MICed-CAB tone, cause the best results you will get will be by moving those mics really really close to the speaker, and rejecting as much of the nasally enclosure tone as possible 4. Two SM57s, using the FREDMAN technique, with a purpose-built double mic holder give phenomenal results! Really, although I own more expensive/more exotic mics, this is my 'go to' Cheers!
@metalinsights966410 сағат бұрын
Interesting post. I have been experimenting with close-miking for several years now. I was wondering, how much distance from the grill cloth (with just one SM57) do you find ideal to get that "distance with mic and speaker to let everything breathe" thing? In case it matters, I record strictly classic metal, standard tuning, nothing too extreme.
