You should try experimenting with some short form content. You could do your top pulls from your collecting career and eventually start doing some newer pulls. For hockey I only know three. Waxbox, Hit Box and Boombox.

Okay I got nerdy and I did the math. Waxbox and Hit Box are about the same value, there is maybe 15-20% markup. Boombox is hideously bad, like 100% markup. Hard to say for sure, I gave $20 in value for the 'graded' and 'hit' cards which seems about right. They are both also Canadian and I did CDN prices so if you are in the US you mileage may vary.

I don't think that is fair. Say what you want, but the value proposed by these mail-out variety bundles isn't drastically different from what you spend on, say, a box of SP Authentic. You win some, you lose some. These bundles give folks the opportunity to try a bunch of different stuff without having to cough up a bunch of money each time they see something. If you already know exactly what you want to chase from the hobby, then these guys probably aren't for you and I get that (I don't subscribe, myself). But for $210, it isn't a bad idea and I actually quite enjoy Zeeree's un-boxing of these.
