It's weird, but I actually like Papa's viewpoint and honesty with Baby. It's a very pragmatic but still supportive sort of talking. He genuinely doesn't know the where's or why's or who's when the first came to be, which felt like he was supporting and acknowledging his son's fears without judging or filling his head with empty optimism. Then on the other hand, he admits that he doesn't think the dump is "the real world" but he doesn't give in to pessimism. His honesty is what allows him and his son to be, relationship wise, closer and more open.

One thing I noticed is that, in the movie (unlike the book) the elephant is REPAIRED in the wedding scene. In the book, her damage is permanent, and she wears a patch over her missing eye and a kerchief over her torn ear. I don't know how I feel about that change. Is it better to see the scars of trauma cured, or accepted and overcome?

The animation which opened my mind as a child was Harry Nilsson’s “the Point” (‘71). It presents philosophy and existentialism to a child’s mind…and super-catchy tunes.

That song... I've always wanted to do a downtempo cover in the style of, like, Portishead or Massive Attack or something to that effect. It's so good. So is this film -- I remember seeing it as a kid in the '90s and then wondering if it was all a fever dream for the next 20 or so years. Nobody ever knew what I was talking about when I tried to describe it, but it stuck with me.

@ShintogaDeathAngel7 күн бұрын
Hmm, I’m wondering if it was actually to make it more impactful, in the case of Pinocchio anyway. I can understand why they’d have a dismemberment shown that way (still freaky though) but a transformation can have the power taken out of it if handled wrong on screen.

Just noticed, the last thing the jack-in-thebox warns them of is ending up in the trash. This scares Baby so much, he panics, and causes that very thing to happen. A perfect illustration of how, the things we worry about the most, we draw towards us.

I will admit, I've never seen this movie, but I will definitely be checking it out shortly. It looks like a beautiful film. Lots of scary elements. It always shocks me how we've gone so backwards when it comes to animation. Whereas the live-action movies of the 50s and 60s were very clean and sanitized, the animation was gritty. And now, animation has become very sanitized, less gritty.

When the frog asks to tell their fortune, and they give their wishes for family, and self-determination, respectively, I can imagine that Fate or Time or whoever takes this seriously, then glances ahead to the future to see what cheat codes she can impart to them. From her perspective, 'What chain of events will give them what they want, if they have a certain reaction to certain events at certain times? And which string of words will most-succinctly help them pay attention to those pivotal moments, and feel hope at points when, normally, they might feel despair?'

For me, it was the movie The Point. I learned my biggest lesson from the Rock Man. "Did you ever see a pterodactyl?" - No. "Did you ever WANT to see a pterodactyl?" - No, I guess not. "There you go. You see what you want to see. And hear what you want to hear. And a rock in the rain is just cool."

Saw this movie months ago and had a very interesting experience with it. I thought i Didn't like it at first, despite the fact darker moods and subject matter in what are ostensibly children's media being what draws me to some books or films i may have missed out on back when i was the target audience for them. Maybe i thought trying to talk abt the nature of infinity in something like this was a hard sell even for more adult stories. Then, something about the ending reprise of the opening song and the final lines being "be happy" just kinda caused me to just cry a lot. Something about going through a really hard life and still being able to be happy has always really resonated with me. I like to think of this film as being an allegory for a father and son dealing with homelessness and exploitation, only being able to survive off the kindness of strangers but wanting so badly to take control of their own lives. Perhaps they held sympathy for manny at the end because they know full well what life at the bottom of the barrel is like, and they wouldn't want even an enemy to feel what they felt. After many trials and tribulations they were still able to succeed, so maybe manny can too. I wish more people can appreciate this movie for the complex feelings it inspires in its audience, even if sometimes it can be a bit difficult to understand.

@@ItsTheGooseItsTheGoose I'm fairly certain it has nothing to do with the multiverse though. Sure, that was a concept back then, but it wasn't as ingrained into society as it is today. This was also before Inception, so it has nothing to do with that. What _does_ it mean then? I have absolutely no idea... but I know what it doesn't. So, like Sherlock Holmes' "Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth." and the Cat in the Hat's plan of marking X's on everything to find out "where it's not;" all we have to do is keep wild mass guessing until we stumble on the truth!
