I'm racing towards collecting a full Mega Drive collection. And as I do I learn a ton of new things about the system.

I've never been a huge Genesis fan, mainly because you only got 1 system as a kid and Nintendo was the choice. There are a few games that came out on the Genesis that were instant classics, but I never felt like I missed out on too much. Great video Mike.

Yup the U.S was definitely Nintendo territory. In the UK we had a proper console war. Sega and Nintendo would take thanks out of each other. I think Sega ended up winning, but it was a good fight :)

Really interesting story mate amd really cool that I'm guessing the story surfaced from your EA game hunting! It seems like SEGA have pretty clueless when it comes to good console PR decisions over the years. Explains a lot really!

Oh my God, the amount of f*ups Sega made are legendary 😂 Their entry into the 32bit era and Gen5 is an absolute classic. You couldn't make it up if you tried. Did you know they turned down the PlayStation as their next console?

I just found this video and your channel because I was looking around for videos that talk a bit about gaming companies getting around cartridge licensing; I was really surprised I found a video that touched on such a random niche topic which had been posted so recently 😂 subbed btw lol

Interesting story here in the United States about the Genesis/MegaDrive Mike. When the unit was available here in 1989, the NES was so popular and with the introduction of the Game Boy, people didn't even bother thinking of buying any other game console because of Nintendo's dominance and marketing power. In fact. 1989-1990 was the NES's most lucrative years in the U.S., and the unit was already 4-5 years old. The Genesis/Mega Drive had very little market share and even Nintendo's top executives at Nintendo of America use to dismiss Sega because of their past console the Master System only received a small percentage of the market.. So for two years, the Genesis/MegaDrive tried many attempts to captivate the community in the country. Famous sports athletics, recording artists, aggressive ad complains... nothing seem to work. It wasn't till Sega of America's CEO at the time Tom Kalinske wanted to radically change the whole concept of the console. With him and with the help of the new character, Sonic "The" Hedgehog, Gamers found that the unit to be worth purchasing. At one point, Sega had a 55% market share over Nintendo and Nintendo executives were at one point baffled because just a few short years ago, the system was barely surviving. I heard that the Mega Drive was incredibly popular in Europe Mike. The stories I read and others explain to me that it sold insanely. Pre-orders was always full, and the distributors were backlogged for the console and their gamers that they themselves couldn't catch up at times. Amazing times that never can be duplicated that's for sure bro. 8^) Anthony..

Yup the Sega consoles were huge in Brazil, UK and Europe. That market share and the sales of the Master System funded their US campaign. In the UK the Mega Drive was more popular than the SNES, but not by much. We had a real console war on our hands:) Sony actually used the Sega model to launch the PlayStation. Ports of big Arcade titles, big sport franchises, cutting edge tech and great royalty deals for 3rd parties.

The European cover designs look much better than the US
@RetroGamerBoy4 жыл бұрын
The European covers seems to have a good hit rate across consoles. I remember how on the PS2 my mates in the U.S were always pissed that the cover art on the UK games were sometimes way better than in the U.S.
