If Black's plan is take the wheat port+road from the beginning then 8 5 10 makes so much more sense. Plus if the wheat port gets taken by the other 8 5 10 player, you can bail out to 6 sheep or 11 9 sheep... There's no getting around the fact that 8 5 4 is just a placement error.

Classic case of trying to tick too many boxes at the cost of very slow development: - wheat port! - coordinated roads! - plow another player out of the game! - all the centre to myself... ... ... ... eventually!

I know connecting roads early is usually a “beginner move”, but at 12:30 I think it would have been a strong choice instead of settling. You lock road uncontested. Obviously it paces hard but you’re already being targeted at this point regardless.

i thought so too, but after he settled on the 3 to 1 port he literally had all the numbers except 2 and 12. maybe he figured with the elite production needed the port more than securing road? probably calculated that he still had road in the bag?

I like settle more, taking road by connecting is really expensive and makes you a target at 7 points without a port. LR shouldn't be an issue considering his production and the mono, and it could be used to blitz two points

just played and won my first catan game! i played the board game as a kid but finally downloaded the app on my phone and won even after getting solo blocked on turn 1

Orange definitely made a mistake not taking the 8510, but I often find myself in games where opponents make silly choices like 411 coastal to plow me first turn - what do you do in those circumstances? It’s hard not to get tilted when you get stuck with subpar placements in 3rd or 4th position and then 1 or 2 make a pyrrhic play to screw you over on the wraparound. Also, what did you think of blue’s position? It seems like a good city and OWS setup although with extremely limited expansion opportunities.

8510 makes sure that only 2 people get the only good ore on the board. The way he placed it not only gave 3 players ore but gave blue a dominant ore wheat sheep game over black with a starting port. Better to lock the ore away from as many players as possible.

@@dandydrew Idk, I just really like that set up for black. They end up on an 8/6/5 OWS with roads on 4s, plus some extra lumber, ore, and a port. Feels like harsh criticism

@@fjc48 IMO 8 5 10 with the wheat port would have been better. You're sacrificing coordinated roads but you still get the plow and settlement on the 6 3 11 eventually with the flexibility of the wheat port / better city quality. Plus you get double wheat which makes you less blockable and completes the OWS. Even starting on the 6 3 11 may have been more preferable because you're committing to OWS without the added time needed to secure the 6 3 11.

someone did a study on online catan stats and it turns out nearly 50% of the time the winner had a mono while drew is no doubt an amazing player with an insanely high win rate, if you’re watching a game where he wins there’s gonna be a decent chance he pulls a mono 😉 obviously drew or anyone can win without monos, but wins make for better content and win = statistically more likely to have pulled a mono

Some thoughts: 3 Ore is just not reliable for consistent City / Dev production - not compared to 8 at least. Whereas the trickle of 3 wood should be sufficient for occasional road / settle placement. Doubling on the 6 increases its chance as a block target and the sheep production there would simply outpace everything else. It really all boils down to the 8 Ore and 3 Wood being more useful than extra sheep and a trickle of ore. Extra edit: The benefit of 3 players on 8 Ore also means it’s unlikely to be a block target often.

Resource layout this board seems sparse. Especially where the 2 12 and 3 ore are located. Yours is best balance play. Easier than IWS this board. Black better play is 8510 ore. Than 854 agreed. Only explanation is wanted wood. I say overload wheat to solve. Orange 834 seemed weak. Again a wood play and desire for wood. Think 8510 sheep. Blue. When one takes a port on placement. Should be one that can produce. This is placed to block. 36wood is more value imo. Or 114 wheat best value with 810 wheat and a road in hand. Do the black move here. Don’t need the ore.
