They were calling skinheads fairies, which is an old way of calling them gay. In this period it would have been a huge musical conflict, because the skinheads were into 1960s reggae, and would have hated what Black Sabbath were playing, and would have thought they looked like hippies. Skins vs hippies was the next youth culture war after mods vs rockers. But of course Black Sabbath weren't middle class hippies, they were hard working class blokes who could fight.

@@markyates1116 All true. The look developed on London housing estates where white kids and and the kids of West Indian immigrants were next door neighbours and friends, and all listening to Jamaican Reggae. The buzzcuts, boots and trousers rolled up to above the ankle came from Jamaican Rudeboys. The song is about the skin heads back in the 70's that wore combat boots. He is calling them fairies (slang word for gay) because they called him one for having long hair. The dwarf comes in because after seeing the skin heads and dropping acid(LSD) he did start to see the "fairies dancing with dwarves".

But the subtext is that skinheads were neoNazis and being called a fairy in the streets was either being told you were going to be beaten to death, or an invitation to any police/thug around to beat you to death. "Be gay do crime" was literal then, and hate crimes were ignored. This was a reaction to violence.

This band is the grandfather's of heavy metal. They were the first heavy metal band ever. They took the blues, jazz, funk and simply set them to heavier electronic instrumentation. Ozzie's voice was used as a fourth instrument in the band. The bass player Geezer Butler and lead guitarist Tony iomi are considered two of the best to ever play their instruments. Bill Ward was the most underrated drummer in music. To put it simply everything that has ever been done with heavy metal, was done by Black Sabbath first. You should try and listen to a song called warning off of their first album. It's one of the most underrated songs they ever did.

What I read is that the lyrics were inspired by the combat boot wearing skin heads they could see from the stage. It obviously goes off in some goofy directions with the smoking and tripping, but I guess that's how the song got started. NIB, Sweet Leaf, Hand of Doom, Paranoid, anything from Paranoid...Basically anything from their first few albums is awesome, and much of it after that is too. Ozzy with his own band featuring Randy Rhodes on guitar had some bombs too. Start with Crazy Train.

Good video. Watching your reaction is fun. I was 16 when this album came out - I bought it right away. Your insight is keen regarding this album's era being at the start of Heavy Metal. Black Sabbath's first two album's contained subtle jazz influences and Fairies Wear Boots is a good example. The opening crescendo builds to a melodic guitar solo that includes 6th tone riffing, similar to jazz. The drum breaks and subsequent shuffle also demonstrate jazz influences. This tune's saving grace are the meaningless and dumb lyrics, and that's exactly what rock-n-roll should be. Rock is not for the intellectual elites - it's for 16 years olds who just want to turn it up and sing along.
