I was reading JoJolion a few days ago and noticed that Josefumi's phone said "Josephumi" and I thought it was cool to think of Josuke as a mix of Josuke, Joseph, Jotaro and Kira all fused togther

@@Jojodoss the problem with japanese is that it is mostly based on context so the original line in Japanese would roughly translate to something like "Large sized fries are liked (by me) but as for fried chicken, not (available/ liked)" so the translators thought that he didn't like them because he expressed how he loves fries and then said but
@Pinnaporaptor Жыл бұрын
This is pretty interesting, I do enjoy translation stuff. WoU drops hard lines and it's nice to see the Large Fries song as intended. Josefumi to Josephmi is alright I think, as you've mentioned, people would probably stick with the original pronunciation/name until other official stuff starts rolling out later down the line, especially considering that is pretty much the name we've gotten used to haha.

*(**1:53** - **2:10**)* Tell me about it. For some ungodly reason, people _still_ refuse to stop calling Bucciarati "Buccellati" despite _every_ piece of official merchandise, the official manga translation, the anime, and the video games _all_ using "Bucciarati".
@thewolf2213 Жыл бұрын
I guess it's because his name comes from buccellati. It's like people calling Versus "Versace" because that's the reference. I call him Bucciarati though

Because "Bucciarati" is just the result of the japanese pronunciation of the name Buccellati. And since he is italian, Buccellati makes more sense. Using Bucciarati is like using Za Warudo instead of The World. But I call him Bucciarati too because I'm too much used to it now
@TeachMeBert Жыл бұрын
Except that, like I said, every single piece of official _JoJo's_ media calls him "Bucciarati", not "Buccellati". Even Japanese figures and artbooks have his name written as "Bucciarati" in English letters. Also, if Araki had ever intended for the character's name to be interpreted as "Buccellati", then he would have actually written the character's name in Japanese as ブッチェッラティ (Buccherrati) or something, which he _never_ has. Evidence for "Bucciarati" being the correct name: The way the character's name is written in Japanese (ブチャラティ _Bucharati)_ "Bucciarati" being used in official media and merchandise Evidence for "Buccellati" being the correct name: Stubborn fans with no reading comprehension

I mean, his name was canonically written down. On the back of his phone it has it bedazzled as "Josephmi." This isn't something that this book has done or that is a weird mistranslation, araki fully intended for him to be called "Josephmi"

Iirc, part of the Holly/Holy issue came from Holly mentioning that her Japanese name is “seiko,” or “holy child.” And this is her Japanese name, as in, it’s the name Holly chose for herself while living in Japan with her husband, speaking Japanese, doing paperwork, etc. So Holy makes sense as a literal translation, but we don’t really use Holy as a name in English.

The other translation I found interesting was that “Jojodoss” can be translated as “GigachadJojodoss”. I think I’ll still use “Jojodoss”since that’s what I’m used to, but it’s nice to see the emphasis on how much of a gigachad he is. As a fried chicken enjoyer, I’m glad to see Josuke is an enjoyer too, but sad to hear that they’re out of fried chicken
