I have a circa 1980 Remington BDL in 300 Win Mag. It does recoil a fair amount! Quite frankly I haven’t fired it much and maybe have half a box thru it. Adam….it behooves me that you don’t clean a new to you rifle before shooting it. At least start testing with a clean bore. Besides that you COULD have a serious carbon ring that could create pressure problems. I get it that most people hate cleaning rifles. Man I just put some Bluegrass on the boom box and get to it. Ron Spomer is correct that SOME rifles don’t like switching between all copper bullets and copper jacket bullets. I know you’re aware that Backfire proved this on a particular rifle.

I know Navy Seals were using the 300 Win Mag because I shot beside them at my local range one winter about 2002. They had a crate of customized 300 WM, and were in town doing cold weather training according to their CO who spoke with me. The CO was shooting his personal 300WM and it was topped off with a Schmidt and Bender scope. A brand that was unfamiliar to me at the time. He gave me all his brass!

The 300 win mag is the best big game caliber on the planet, for factory available ammo and rifles and not needing shoulder surgery after you shoot it. It will put down anything on the planet. Yes in Africa there are caliber restrictions for the dangerous five. Jim shockey took a cape buffalo with two shots. All things considered, for big game hunting the 300 win mag is still the king.

I've had great results with federal premium safari 180gr nosler partitions. Far as factory loads go along with the 180gr fusion and federal blue box with the Sierra flat base 180gr bullets. I'm down to two 300win mag rifles. And ruger 77 top tang safety and Remington 700 bdl with the blued stainless barrel that was my dad's. It's and absolute tac driver with the 180gr partitions and I reload 165gr partitions and 150gr accubonds for the ruger 77. Most people don't like this much recoil and even fewer can get past it. I don't really give it much thought I killed a buck with that 700 bdl back in 92 when I was 14 and 125lb I'm 47 now and 140lb so I just have to ride the lightning. Just remember nothing makes up for poor shot placement .

Huh, have you, huh, huh? lol Seriously, since you’ll have the perfect chance to test this, and since you’ll be having a part 2 for this rifle and it’s ammunition testing, before going to the range for the part 2, maybe thoroughly clean the barrel and then try any and all copper tipped ammunition you have for it, and shoot it first? Just to see if it groups differently, better? Either way, as always Hoot, great video!

I’ve tried cleaning between switching bullet types and switched without cleaning on multiple rifles, doesn’t make a difference. After all, why should it? A 300win mag seems like a whole lotta gun for the tiny deer you good ole boys have in your neck of the woods. As well I’ve always found it strange that people will shoot 180gr out of a 06 but when they step up to the 300 mag they drop way done in bullet weight. Kinda defeats the whole purpose of a magnum. And is often why they find it so destructive on game.
