I enjoy all of your videos, Trevor. I especially appreciate the ones where you go back to your roots and revisit the early days. Not because they feel sentimental, but because so many that enjoy your channel are beginners, and you've never forgotten what that is like, wondering if they can do it, too. I watch this video and realize "Hey, I can do that." And that's what I'm going to do. Thanks man!

Thank you so much, Trevor. This is actually (about to be) my exact setup. I recently bought an EOS Rebel T7 for mainly astrophotography but as I started taking normal photos too I really fell in love with it as well. Just a few hours ago I was finally able to order my long-awaited Star Adventurer 2i Pro Pack. I'm thinking of also buying a new tripod because I am using an old one and I don't really trust it. My camera came loose out of nowhere on it (yes, I caught it). I also will buy a ball head because I've seen a lot of astrophotographers and especially you recommend them. My main point of all of this is that you have inspired me to start astrophotography and have been such a huge help in getting me started. So far I am really proud of the untracked Milky Way shots that I have achieved. So much color and detail after stacking and Photoshop. I started doing calibration frames and stuff and that helped too. I've always been interested in space and photos from it, but you are one of the main people that have helped me actually make my dream of starting to do it myself come true. I really appreciate you and what you do and I hope you continue to share your astrophotography journies for as long as you can. Thank you, a lot.

Just yesterday I was outside taking pictures and thinking about the same question as I was standing there alone... you really do feel a deeper connection with everything around you. I actually began wondering if somewhere there was another creature in this fast universe looking toward us, doing what I was doing and wondering as I was wondering. I've actually given it a name, I like to imagine it will be my counterpart out there in the Universe. Might sound strange, but fills me with a feeling of connection to something bigger. :)

I really enjoyed the message at the end of this one. From Alabama, US, which seems to be notorious for being cloudy whenever anything cosmic occurs. I spent the other night complaining about the light pollution around my area, the fact my tracking mount hasn't shipped nearly 6 months later, and anything else that could come to mind. But just before the meteors started rolling in, I had an epiphany about how people in the past didn't worry about technology, they just watched the stars. I put my limited equipment away, reclined and just enjoyed the show for the first time in a long time.

I so miss this hobby but challenges with gear, weather and light pollution caused me to hang it up about 20 years ago. I am amazed at the newest tech now though compared to when I was doing it. All of the challenges I mentioned before have only gotten worse for me since then though but I still feel it calling my name to jump back in, especially lately.

Trevor, you pulled some heart strings of mine at the end of the video. Our evolutionary history as humans until the past couple hundred years has been tightly connected to the night sky. For example, nighttime events would often be planned by the cycle of the moon and we easily navigated using the night sky, and even the sun. If you saw what the night sky looks like for me, you might cry. My wife wonders why I don't use my telescope more (she bought it for me)... well, because we live next to a mall and having parking lot lights in the back and front of our townhouse. Oh, and there are high voltage power lines that are in my only field of view. So parking lot lights and a couple dozen power lines. All I can really do is look at the moon. At least I'm getting to learn a lot for when I put my telescope to use.

I never feel more at peace until I'm under that night sky. I am fortunate enough on a dark night to be able to see the milky way right from my backyard. At this point I use my tamron 70 to 300 (similar to the canon lens in video)to capture most of my deep sky objects so far. Although a wide 50mm f1.8 (always stop down!!!)on a canon rebel t7i has been my choice lately capturing multiple nebulae at once. Better light better glass with the nifty fifty, But enough exposure time at 300mm @ F5.6 will get great results. Fun fact: I use the canon 70-300mm profile correction in lightroom when using the Tamron lol. Great capture. Clear skies 📷 🌌

On that camera, the lens is an equivalent 120-480mm. About the only thing it needs is a hood. Such a light weight kit is an extremely good place to start. Even fully zoomed in, the kit weighs so little it would be next to no strain on that mount.

Two things, Trevor: 1) I totally agree with the philosophy of the connectedness. Just last week I was showing a photo I took of the craters Theophilus, Cyrillus, and Catharina to a local shopkeeper with whom I'm acquainted. She's from Syria and speaks limited English. She squinted at the photo, head at a slight angle as she processed what she was seeing. When she got it, a literal shockwave of comprehension exploded across her face; her squint turned to wide-eyed surprise, her pupils dilated, her jaw when slack and she took a half-step back like she'd been punched. After a second, she leaned back in for a closer look. Her response reflects what I've seen from people for a few decades now after sharing photos and thousands of telescopic views with random strangers on street corners. I think it is a primal feeling of seeing something not of this Earth for the first time, and making one understand their place in the universe. Thing the second: Why the ball mount, as opposed to a declination bracket?

I love this so much! One of my favorite areas of the sky to shoot. That "S" band of stars that frame up the Trifid and Lagoon for what ever reason is intoxicating to me. Bonus points for doing it with budget equipment. There is something to be said for when you say, "This set up is light weight" and the snatch it with 1 hand lol.

However I found it extremely difficult to focus even with the mask. It captured an image of Jupiter last night and managed to catch 2 of it's moons super bright as well, and then Saturn and Titan after that... with a Canon G7XMkII, they looked like stars but hey, I wanted to see if it could be done. Another great video and back to the basics. Really great processing to pull all that detail at 90 minutes. Fun to pull out the tracker and do it just because one can. Plastic lens, plastic camera body, plastic in the tracker plus bugs plus DEET. Tough combination. Picaridin 12% to15% works as well as 40% DEET and won’t melt plastic. Something to think about. Ash will notice it doesn’t stink either. Can also use a Thermacell and have nothing on your hands at all but a bit less environmentally friendly, not that DEET is.

Trevor: I looked up the sensor for the T7 for the purpose of seeing the read noise vs ISO curve. I suggest using the lowest ISO regardless of the exposure time to minimize read noise. The lowest ISO setting does not change the number of photons you collect. It only reduces the noise in the image. You can add the gain in post after stacking. Try once.

Great data collection. And processing. I just started last year and was trying to keep low budget. I use the words...inexspensive. Most of it isn't cheap..lol. as I searched for my first dslr I too picked up the T7. Decent price. 2 lenses. And I also use it for other things. After learning how to attach it to a telescope. The fun really began. I should of opted for the T7i. But it only came with one lens. The flip out screen would of helped from the crazy standing and viewing positions! My biggest down fall is processing the data collected. But I'm only a year into it. Nice thing about saving the data, I can always go back and try different ways to process. I've learned a lot from your videos and I thank you for putting the information out there.

Lucky you!!! I've been wanting to photograph those targets most of the summer with similar equipment, but between Monsoon rain clouds, and now smoke from Western fires, it's been hopeless here in New Mexico

Curious about why you chose 200mm rather than 300mm and why you stopped down to 6.3. Is sharpness the reason?

Is this literally how it came out of your camera? Or did you shoot in RAW and customized the image in Lightroom? But still then a great performance for a lense that has bin written off by a lot of photographers.

Only about half way through the video. But I had to stop to comment on this already. I got to the Astro backyard website from a Google suggestion. I used your link for the Star tracker and went ahead and got the carbon fiber tripod also. As soon as I saw that you are using almost the exact same gear as I am, I had to get that tracker. It hasn't shipped yet. But it will be my first! I've been trying my hand at 4 sec or less bright objects. But when I get that thing, I'll finally be able to capture much much more! Excellent video and article! I subbed immediately and can't wait to see what else you got! And one more thing.... I've been using the T3i with the 18-55 and 70-300 kit lenses. I have been trying hard to capture the Andromeda Galaxy. If anyone has suggestions on how to get even a tiny bit to show up with out a tracker and only about 4 sec exposure time, please help!

is there an affordable computerized tracker I can get to "aim" the cam ? I have nice equipment but not a nice telescope. would love to put a big screen tv outside connect the cam to the screen and then tell the computer "find jupiter and track it" like the computerized telescopes can do. I know you have to give it a base point it at the north star or something like that??? maybe a cheap scope with a decent tracker where I can rip off the scop and attach my camera? its a brute though the cam is 3 or 4 pounds and the lens is another 6 or so pounds. Suggestions? My HOUSE is a burtle 2/3 and I am a 20 minute drive to burtle 1. I REALLY want to play with this !!!

A very wholesome package of video in such a small length. Love it! Could you share with us if you've taken calibration frames and at what f-stop was a single exposure adequate? Cheers from Greece.
