I covered Don Haskins and UTEP back in 1983-1987. He hated the press as he didn't trust anyone. I called him about a series I did, writing about any player he chose, someone who worked hard but didn't get any press. He didn't trust me, either, even interrupting my first interview to find out what I was asking the player. When the player reassured him I was asking "nice" questions, Coach Haskins began to trust me. When the article came out, Coach liked it...and the next one, too. Coach would ignore the press after games, walking past everyone...except me. He'd stop, smile at me, say hi, then move on. The other reporters were dumbfounded, wondering what the heck was going on. LOL!

That’s how Haskins was brother. If you really had a chance to have a conversation with him you were special. Especially late in his life.

I was actually watching the TWU vs. Kentucky game in 1966. I was 6 years old and the game was in black and white. I remember thinking to myself that if these 5 " colored " guys could win the national championship then I as a young black boy could do anything that I set my mind to.
