Amazing how this ancient society embraced the same important ethical considerations that we still work with today! $

There was an older set of laws from that region older than Hammurabi's by an ancient king whose name begins with the letter A. I believe his name was either Babylonian also or Akkadian or Sumerian or other similar culture.
@HistoryXFinance8 күн бұрын
Yes, you're right! Hammurabi's Code is generally considered to be the first recorded code of law in human history. But, the Sumerian King Ur-Nammu's code dates back to the 21st century BC so it would be three centuries older and there was another set of laws, the Sumerian Code of Lipit-Ishtar of Isin, that was two centuries older than Hammurabi's code. While both Ur-Nammu's and Lipit-Ishtar's codes predate Hammurabi's, they differ in scope and focus. Ur-Nammu's code is about compensatory justice, outlining penalties in silver for various crimes, whereas Lipit-Ishtar's code is more on social structure, addressing inheritance, marriage, and the duties of slaves and tenants. www.history.com/topics/ancient-middle-east/hammurabi

Sargon of Akkad aka the great
@SpecialAgent6666 күн бұрын
@@jaredchilders3781 Sargon was a great ancient King installed in power by Goddess Ishtar. It's going to be a challenge to find who I Am talking about as he is not that popular but I recall his long name starts with an A.

Imagine believing that nobody before this, anywhere else in the world, had engaged in writing or the forming of laws.
@HistoryXFinance6 күн бұрын
That's technically not true though. Hammurabi's code is generally considered to be the first recorded code of law in human history - sure, but, the Sumerian King Ur-Nammu's code dates back to the 21st century BC so it would be three centuries older and there was another set of laws, the Sumerian Code of Lipit-Ishtar of Isin, that was two centuries older than Hammurabi's code. Important to keep this in context...

....and obviously Hammurabi could pardon anyone he wished...nice to see the more things change the more they stay the same🫣
@HistoryXFinance7 күн бұрын
True, his power to pardon shows how centralized authority worked back then and his laws do still influences us today. Ideas like "innocent until proven guilty" and making punishments that fit the crime trace back to his code. More here: www.history.com/news/hammurabi-code-legal-system-influence

What about the Code of Ur-Nammu come on why do the babylonians always get the credit?
@HistoryXFinance6 күн бұрын
I understand where you're coming from, but, it's probably because Hammurabi's code has more specific details and covers a wide variety of subjects including family law, property rights, and commercial transactions and has around 282 laws.

Slaves getting wages and owning property. Writing off unpaid loans and protection from exploitation. Not perfect but not bad either. $
