No they're not, I was 7 years old when I saw this. This was in the days before the Internet was big and tv ruled the home. Eastenders was the biggest soap on tv and we used to buy tv guides each week to read spoilers on the soaps, it would mention the actors names, even after all these years I still remember many of the cast's names hence Todd Carty. Even if you didn't watch football than you still would have heard about Everton fans fighting Liverpool fans in the news because they've been at eachother's throats for years. The aer Lingus one was obvious and air on a g string is an incredibly famous piece of music used in many tv shows and movies over the years, in fact at the time it was being used in a chocolate advert where they would mention the name of the song at the bottom of the screen. The last question you can just work out.

The question about the placement of stadiums is similar in that sense. The first questions is easy, but definitely more difficult than usual first questions. The question she failed on is imo the easiest one out of all of these. But it is very weirdly worded and just doesn't make much sense in general

These questions aren’t just easy, they’re very easy. She made them look more difficult than they are. He even gave her the answer to the first question, which anyone could work out fairly easily. Aer Lingus - easy question. Everton - easy question. Mark Fowler question is easy even if you didn’t watch Eastenders at the time. The last question is a deviation of a classic general knowledge question that comes up time and time again; “Which archbishop is known as the Primate of England?” - which is the Archbishop of York but it’s used as a trip question as the instant answer most will give if they don’t know is the Archbishop of Canterbury - which is “primate of all England” just to add to the confusion. Maybe you could say the last one is a 1000 or 2000 question, albeit a very generous one. If I somehow got on this show and these were the first five I’d be delighted. Seen much more difficult ones in the first five in the past

These questions were a piss take! They were actually horrendous questions that were hard to answer (not the Everton one as I think thats pretty common knowledge) the questions leading up to £1000 are silly answers with an obvious answer but these were really tricky.

The thing is - that it is possible to prepare to a certain extent - british geography , football , classical music , nursery rhymes , soaps and tv ,sayings , plants and animals are recurring themes - I don’t watch football , but I would have revised top 30/40 teams - players managers and locations before going on the show - I also would have revised east Enders and coronation street (which both come up often)

I could only answer the Bach one and the Aer Lingus one. My family never watched EastEnders either (and it's not like the average council flat family had a computer and internet back then), so I didn't get into it; I never took interest in football - I just knew Manchester United and Chelsea were famous, my nearest club was Brentford and my grandad supported Ipswich; I don't really know anything about bishops other than the Archbishop of Canterbury - I just knew the name of our vicar as "Father Peter". These were the hardest first 5 questions I've ever seen on WWTBAM!

Fortunately many of us paid attention at school. Don’t judge everyone by the same standard as we witnessed in the clip from the contestant. The Everton question didn’t necessarily require knowledge of football. Reasonable knowledge of UK geography would have been sufficient to know that Everton is an area of Liverpool. I think you will find if you watch the clip again that the contestant’s husband was horrified when he heard her answer which he knew was wrong......whether he knew the correct answer is of course pure conjecture.

Primate is the main bishop in a country : the top guy in Ireland is known as 'the Primate of all Ireland'

I just googled “primate etymology” (which I should’ve done before asking the question ) and apparently the use of primate for bishops in the sense of prime/first precedes the use of primate for monkeys/humans (first/best among the mammals) by almost 600 years. Cool.

Chris Tarrant was very professional with that lady.It's horrible anyone leaves with nothing in any variety.Are all the questions at random for different people?Love when they're EASY,but not when they get too difficult and tricky.

In all fairness I wouldn't have known that £1,000 question, never heard of Primate as a bishop and in fact the only questions I was dead certain on out of those 5 were the Everton one and the EastEnders one.

Something that occurs to me, watching these old clips, is: From where the contestant is sitting, can they not see audience members in front of them (and behind Chris Tarrant)? On the last question (and others) I feel I would automatically be mouthing out "primate" even though I shouldn't, and I can imagine other people in the audience would kind of instinctively do the same. In the documentary around Charles Ingram cheating one contestant said that he wondered at the time whetber someone in the audience was giving him subtle signals, so contestants can presumably see some of the audience. On the other hand, perhaps it's too dark for the contestant to see people's mouths/ faces. It must be difficult on occasion for Chris Tarrant not to let on if he knows the correct answer (in his body language and/ or tone of voice).
