Beginner contractors here’s a tip: setup a draw system with your clients, ask for the deposit then tell them at predetermined phases of construction they will come inspect and make sure everything is what they want, then get a signature and a check, then move to the next stage. Also, get checks cash through the clients bank if possible, it is removed instantly and lowers chance of canceled checks

Couldn’t have said it better that’s why for example family restaurants can be a hit or miss. They either work together and succeed or too many people have a hand on the pot and wanna start trying to dictate what they believe is best for the restaurant and then family ties get broken, everyone is mad with each other, etc.

Yeah that’s why people are hesitant to pay deposits, especially big ones. His contractor probably left the country. You pay as the job is complete and deposit should be used for materials with proof of receipts.
