Hey Steven, do you get paid upfront in a project, meaning as soon as you are hired, or in the middle of it, or after the game have been released ?

Usually in milestones! So in halves (small projects) or 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, monthly, etc. for larger soundtracks! Some soundtracks take years to complete, so it’s a unique situation every time!

If you do independently, and have a portfolio that shows you are a professional, ask for all money upfront if you can, for each track. Like lawyers do. So you have clients that trust you , and you will work a lot to not disappoint. You separate in milestones because so you can change price later, if needed. You may find yourself way more engaged in the work as you expected. At least so is my experience
