Taiwan is the name of the island as a whole, although the 'nation' of Taiwan is named as the Chinese Taipei in respect to the Chinese government, because there is no way Chinese Taipei could fight China for the mainland, but China could easily invade Taiwan in. A heartbeat. The 'nation' of Chinese Taipei also claims several islands around SE Asia. Taiwan is one of the islands claimed by Chinese Taipei, who happen to just name themselves after the main island of 'Taiwan'. Edit: By Chinese Taipei, I mean ROC, Republic of China. Chinese Taipei is the name that is used in agreement with PROC, (China) to refer to Taiwan as a nation without troubling or angering China.

The claim of Taiwan is the Qing dynasty borders because in 1949 The ROC had basically nothing expected a tiny bit of China and the island to Taiwan
@Wackaz3 жыл бұрын
Taiwan is historically Chinese territory. The earliest historical writings on the island is the year AD230 when the Wu Kingdom during the Sanguo era deployed 10k troops to Taiwan, the then-named Yizhou. Mid 12th-century, the Song Dynasty put Taiwan, which was part of the Penghu area back then, under the Fujian Province, which still exists today. From Song to Ming, Penghu had been consistently Chinese territory and it is during that time when the most native of Taiwanese which migrated there 7000 years ago were blended with the most advanced civilization of that time and became an undividable territory of China. Nearing the end of Ming and at the start of the 17th-century, the Netherlands invaded Taiwan when Ming was under war. Very soon the Spanish did too but they were kicked out by Netherland in 1642. Taiwan became colonised by the Netherlands. 1644, the Qing Dynasty was established. 1661 April, Zheng Chenggong under the title of General of South-Ming Dynasty, engaged in a war to take Taiwan back with 25k soldiers and a few hundred battleships. 1662 Feburary, Netherlands surrender. Zheng becomes a national hero. 1811, Taiwan population reached 1.9 mil, mostly immigrants from Fujian and Guangdong. Taiwan becomes an important argricultural area for Qing. It is also then Taiwan is completely de-westernised, unfortunately for the island, colonial powers will still step foot on it once again. 1884-1885, Sino-French War, France invades Taiwan. Head of Taiwan Liu Mingzhuan kicks the shit out of them. Unfortuantely China lost all other parts of the war and were forced to sign the Treaty of Tientsin, nevertheless, the French was forced out of Taiwan. After the Sino-French War, to strengthen Naval defence, Qing let Taiwan become the 20th province of China. Under Head of Taiwan Liu, it became one of the most powerful provinces then. 1894, Sino-Japanese War. The next year, Qing lost. 1895 April 17th, the Shimonoseki Treaty was signed, officially giving Taiwan up to the Japanese. Army General in Taiwan Liu Yongfu refuse to comply, fought for 5+ months, lost anyhow. Taiwan will be under Japanese colonial rule for 50+ years. 1937 July, the Japanese started the Double-Seven Incident, starting the 2nd wave of Sino-Japanese War. After 8 years, China wins and the Japanese surrender Taiwan. Taiwan has been Chinese territory ever since. The current valid dispute is whether Taiwan should be under the Republic of China or the People's Republic of China. It is important to note that both Chinas claim the entirely of China, both the mainland and Taiwan, with the RoC controlling Taiwan and the PRC controlling mainland. This is the One-China Policy. The current Taiwan separatists wants China divided, they want Taiwan to become on its own. This is against both RoC and PRC policy and the movement is made popular by the current incompetency of Kuomingtang as the DPP gets elected two terms in a row. So no, Taiwan is not part of the PRC. There is dispute on that issue. But it is definitely part of China, a united China. Be it RoC or PRC, Taiwan is and will always be Chinese. The Qing dynasty held on to Taiwan for about 200 years until it was colonized by Japan. Do I think Taiwan should be an independent state from this, no. The land should return to the original owner. Then after WW2 Taiwan was given back to China by the Allies. Afterwards the Communists and Nationalists had a civil war and the communists won and the nationalists (backed by the US) fled to Taiwan. Since the communists won that war they got ownership. It’s a Chinese civil war. The fought for the sovereignty of China. Which includes the territories of Taiwan. If they didn’t it’s essentially saying the US beat the confederacy yet the confederacy still gets to own Florida. It doesn’t make sense. Also, it would be dumb as hell if Taiwan ever became an independent country. The KMT doesn’t even want to be an independent country. They know their economy would collapse if they became separate from the mainland.

Pedantically: the UK did not exist as such in 1704. It was the Kingdom of Great Britain from 1604ish to 1707. I say 1604ish because James VI of Scotland also became the king of England by a separate inheritance in 1603. However it was initially still two separate kingdoms that just happened to have the same king. I am not sure how long it took for James to get the idea of "The Kingdom of Great Britain" accepted, though he made a proclamation to that effect in sixteen oh something. The challenge of uniting the Parliaments would take over a century, and that was bitterly resented both sides of the border. The Act of Union renamed the country the "United Kingdom of Great Britain", the first words being pure spin. Nothing new to Parliamentary practice of course. So... It is kind of fun that Gib has been owned by the UK for longer than the UK has existed.

I don't really like comparing metro areas because they could be drawn up in any order based on regular commuters/people actively engaging with the core city or conurbation.

The Han Island "dispute is hilarious on two levels. One is that does Canada REALLY need a couple of square kilometers of frozen rubble? It's not as if Canada is running out of that. The other ridiculous part is about this little European Imperialist Kingdom biting off the last available morsel of the New World in it's bid for greater greatness. Gilbert and Sullivan could have written an operetta about that part of the farce.

ROC was authoritarian because of political tutelage proposed by Dr. Sun Yat-sen after democracy failed. The idea was to educate the people and properly transition to democracy but the ROC faced many threats such as the warlords, imperial Japan and the communists. After the Taiwan area was fortified and protected and developing, a transition to multi-party democracy was installed. :) Democracy was attempted in 1912 and in the 1940s but failed unfortunately both times. It wasn’t until the late 20th century to early 21st century in Taiwan that it finally worked.

Actually it was Dr. Sun Yat-sen that made the CCP and the KMT work together, what shattered all of this was Chang Kai-shek.
@yunyizhe3 жыл бұрын
@@Claro1993 Not exactly. He accepted the Communist Party because he wanted a multi-party system and they were somewhat similar to the KMT at the time and he wanted all parties of China to work together to install his democratic republic. The communist party wanted their rule under their ideology and so the civil war started. The PRC does not adhere to his ideologies, they were founded on Marxist-Leninist-Maoist theory and hail Chairman Mao as their founder. Chiang Kai-Shek was a flawed man but sought to implement the ideologies of Dr. Sun. While unfortunately often violent in his methods (albeit resulting in less death than under Mao) he did protect China from Japan along with Taiwan from the communists.
@yunyizhe3 жыл бұрын
@@Hsalf904 I don’t know much about the USSR. But the PRC afaik follows the Marxist-Leninist idea of a one party rule of the proletariat, with a rule of a single communist party. Afaik the PRC has never been a multi-party democracy with free elections and still isn’t today.

There is no 'city' of that shape and size. It's Greater London. You can call it a conurbation, Met County equivalent, region, whatever, but Greater London is not a city. The only actual cities in Greater London are City of London and City of Westminster. Though you are right in that the Greater London metropolitan area does spread quite far into the southeast.
