This Crafteman LT2000 Lawn Tractor is throwing the deck belt off. Easy Fix!

I wish i lived closer to where you are. I have a Sears Craftsman LT 1500, and i think i know what's wrong with mine, but i'm not that familiar with working on mowers. Mine likes to throw belts& break them too. And i'm 70 years old and really shouldn't be crawling around on the ground wrestling with the mower deck. I live on a fixed income and when my money is gone( bills, groc., gas, etc.), it's gone. But, i need to get it fixed because all i have to mow my yard( 2 1/2--3 lots) is a push mower, and that is a work out and a half. Anyway, thanks for your video. Very informative.

Look at the condition of all the pullies and all the bearings. Something is not happy. The idler pulley might be bent or some build up maybe.

Also, in addition to what GlennsSpeedShop posted above, make sure you are using a quality belt that is the correct size! Cheap belts usually don't have the kevlar or aramid belts in them to make them really strong. Yeah, the Gates and Sten belts cost more, but there is a reason. Also, make sure that the "keepers" and/or "brakes" around the pulleys are not bent, and don't have any sharp edges on them that might cut the belt. Good luck!

The idler bearing and the spindle bearings are both sealed bearings but they can both be taken apart and greased. Or you can replace them. repair only takes a little time and grease. Don't remove the spindle. Take the pulley nut off and drive the shaft down from the top. Then you can pry the seal off of the bearing and regrease it. Yeah I'm cheap but I am also poor. Removing those spindles usually destroys them so don't try it. You can also match up the bearings in the spindles a lot cheaper than replacing the whole spindle. I grew up poor so I don't do things like line mechanics do. Also you can get better bearings than the cheap garbage that was put in those spindles to start with. Been bending wrenches for 55 or more years. first car I fixed was a Triumph TR6 for a returning Vietnam Vet named Turby. I told him all it was was a complicated lawnmower. lol

Sir it's throwing the belts because the bell guard brackets are missing.

I would of welded if possible with the thin material , to counter act the pulley force forward on the belt.

That would be best for the mower. A mower like this is only worth about $250.00 when I sell it and I already have a bunch of time and money into it. You just can't do full restorations and make it pay sometimes.

I watched it. You didn't raise and lower the deck while it was engaged. It'll throw the belt

how could you NOT replace that worn out bearing... it's easy and cheap.

@sicklecell9999 Seems all the bearing were worn out. At least take the cover off and shoot some grease inside.

Sounds like my problem. I had to weld up the deck a bit but didn't look at the angle of that stationary pulley until the belt kept popping off on lower levels

Is that pulley being pulled up from the belt tension? I could add a small bracing to it

I fix and sell about 10 mowers every year. No way I can remember what year any of them are. Likely about 20 years old...

Just had to do the same thing to my mower. 18 inch pipe wrench did the trick.
