This episode always gets me. This shows how amazing this arc is. It really hits hard on character development. You legit see Gon go from kind and sincere to a straight monster willing to kill to get his revenge. To Mereum, who starts out as a monster wanting to dominate the world, to someone kind and sincere, just wanting to be alone with the one he loves at the end. Really crazy parallel between the 2 characters. Great reaction!

Just in case yall didnt notice, that is the real Deigo and the one the ants killed was a doppleganger. He left his position as a cruel dictator long ago once he realised that wars and death were pointless and decided to live peacefully in a farm. It shows the parallel between Meruem who thought similarly until meeting Komugi. Diego's purpose was to live in peace and write poetry and Meruem's purpose was to be with Komugi, both ended up leaving their positions of power and tyranny which they once thought to be the most important aspects of life. Its a sad parallel because both had a change of heart but one was too late. Im glad both of you enjoyed this arc i loved your reactions and cant wait for the rest of this series!

The detail that I love about this arc is the gungi game which is specially made by Togashi-sensei for this arc. In all of Meruem and Komugi's games, we are never shown how they play except the game where Meruem uses Kokuriko's strategy and this episode. Kokuriko is a strategy that aims to separate the officers from the king pieces and then isolate the king pieces and finish him off (yeah the same tactic that hunters use against chimera ants). In the match where Meruem uses this tactic, he loses because Komugi knows how to turn things around, we are spoilers indirectly about the big picture of the battle and the hunters will fail to kill the king. But in this episode we see kokuriko's strategy again but Komugi uses it and wins because Komugi has developed a strategy and found a counter against it counter. we were given confirmation that in the end the hunter managed to kill the king. And the ending game where we only saw 2 pieces of gungi was absolutely beautiful

Kokoriko is an advanced Gungi technique developed by Komugi that focuses on isolating the King (the Gungi piece, not the Chimera Ant), separating it from the other pieces and killing it, just as Netero and the Hunters were planning to do with Meruem. However, Komugi unexpectedly develops a technique to counterattack it in the middle of a game, which means that the King's piece (representing Meruem) would no longer have to die (since it unexpectedly survived the nuclear bomb). Then, later on, when Komugi uses Kokoriko again, she develops a "counter attack to the counter attack" ("That move... It actually found a way out!"), representing the King's piece (Meruem), which apparently has to die in the end (because of Rose's poison). However, immediately after defeating Meruem using Kokoriko (symbolizing his imminent death), Komugi and Meruem begin an endgame together, a game they never finish. 1-5-1 Black King -> 9-5-1 White Lieutenant General, I believe, or something to that effect. Immediately afterwards, they die together, leaving Meruem's only black piece and Komugi's only white piece on the board, together in Gungi forever. This represents that the two have always been united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece on the ground, symbolizing his death, and then Komugi responds by placing her piece next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die by his side... The expression "Maybe I'm not worthy, but allow me to go with you" is an old Japanese idiom that Japanese women used to use to accept marriages, but since in their case it wasn't really a marriage, it shows their desire to have an intimate connection by wanting to die holding his hand. The black screen/black panels in the manga show that Rose's poison has made Meruem go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she's still there, because he can no longer see her. This is ironic because his name means "the light that illuminates/shines on everyone". He even obtained some photon powers related to God's light before his death, allowing him to fulfill the purpose of his name. What's more, as they play in the bunker before his death, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "reverses her reversal", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light". Despite being much weaker (and blind to life), her light shone much brighter than his. So, when he dies, Komugi holds him and feels his head, allowing him to finally "see" or know what his face looks like. So when they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness, while she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has always seen, and knows what it's like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows her face, allowing each to better understand the other as they disappear (the soundtrack used during their death scene is called "Understanding").

as you kinda pointed out, this is meruem who stood at the pinacle of all beings and komugi who by a society's construct was at the lowest standard, found their equal and that just shows us the beautiful side of the duality of humans, i believe theres a reason why in some cutscenes some episodes ago they showed us those war scenes, slaughter house scenes, its because humans are literally capable of the most love but also the most vile and horrific things ever, things we dont even know about, i think that why when netero was fighting meruem he said he wanted to beat him fast before he could be swayed, maybe meruem's fair way of chosing the worthy ones would be much more humane vs what humans have done and still do, maybe that was the next step in evolution and would create a better world, that's why i dont like to consider meruem and the ants monsters, because while what they did was horrific, its nothing close to what human minds and hands have done in the name of their own rightousness

Meruem killed a kid before. And here I am always bawling my eyes out for him and Komugi. The King nor Komugi realized they were in love. There's no other explanation why Komugi would be willing to die with Meruem even if she says "It's because only Meruem made her so happy" because that's love itself. Meruem wants nothing else but to see Komugi until his last breath. That's rather too strong just for a sense of companionship, right?

i creid and this is like my 12 time watching it. the king is the best character ever. pure genius by the author. the true epitome of evolution. i really fucking hope none of this doesnt matters in the future. im not up on the manga but i know the story switches completely again after the manga ends and im pretty sure Gon hasnt even appeared yet in the manga after the end of the anime. i really want both komugi and meruems nen to live on in some way. possibly inside of Gon. thats where i want this to go. i really hope their two nens live on somehow

Never I've ever thought that someone who killed a kid and eat its brain when he was literally just got born was gonna be the saddest death... Damn

Well he was a different species and they eat humans so it was natural. Meruem was just like a feral human child eating a cub because no one told it or taught it not to.
