This Deadly Disease Was Found On Our Fruit Trees - Phytophthora Gummosis - Fruit tree Canker

We have ben dealing with many problems this year in particular. The heat has caused havoc and we have been finding things left over from this summer heat's damage. Prevent stump rotting. This week we are doing some final fall maintenance and found Canker infecting a couple trees!

Always learning from other gardeners. Very good info, thanks. If I knew my tree was slowly dying I think I’d pull it and plant new. It would bother me too much to keep a dying tree. Never fun losing a favorite fruit tree.

Same here brother. Gardening and urban farm living is a practice for all. I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt that it may survive after treating it and see how it goes next season. If it can survive another summer then we may be in the clear! Fingers crossed.

Aaron, was your peach tree from Reid or a big box store? I cut down an almond tree (from Stark Bros) a while back that was full of gummosis and now only buy stone fruit trees from Reid after seeing CA rootstocks slowly decline here in our soils. Peach trees are also very susceptible to shot hole here. Reid advised that I spray my peach trees each year before they bloom. I follow that regimen with my peach trees and also with the mango trees if we have a wet winter to head off fungal issues during the growing season. Your video offers solid advice.

Most of our trees are his including this Red Barron Peach. I've been asking him for years for this tree and he grafted this tree for me finally! My heart sank when I found this problem 😭

Good to know about this treatment. I have replaced a couple 1st leaf fig trees that cooked this summer with 2 other varieties of peach. I'll be spraying every dormant tree this Feb / March prior to bud swell.

@@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard It's good you caught it early. Your tree has a good chance to recover. Also just to mention, I've been using plastic edging around the trunk of my trees to keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk. I too found that mulch on top of the root crown can bring issues.

We will be using a plant or milk based paint. I have not used the IV Organics three in one plant guard yet, but definitely want to give that a try.

For non Organic alternatives, Water-based latex paints are relatively safer than oil based latex paints, but it is definitely not OMRI approved. The oil is toxic and will do more harm than good to the tree trunk.

What organic or natural spray could be used. Copper spray is toxic😮

You are right, traditional copper spray used in the farming industry is mildly toxic when used properly, but very toxic when applied more than it is needed. It pollutes the soil by adding too much copper and it kills roots and beneficial fungus.

We will be using OMRI approved copper sulfate, only on the bark and just above the crown of the roots. We will then be sealing the sprayed treatment with an Organic paint so we don't lose the treatment due to rain and regular watering. We need to use the approved treatment as to the directions so we don't contaminate our precious soil.

Copper fungicides are approved to use for organic gardening. Many things that are natural can also be toxic if not used properly. IMO, AMZ is doing the right thing here to try to reverse the issue. Reid knows his stuff and I would have advised him to do the same thing. It's easy to lay down some plastic over the soil if concerned about excess solution falling on the ground but given the severity of the canker, I would do a soil drench too.

@EnlightenmentGarden I concur, this is my first issue with this disease, so I'm here to learn as well. If this is a success I absolutely want to share what I did to maybe help others. Reid is a good friend. I 100% trust his experience and advice. After all, these are his trees I'm growing!
