Tbh my first step would be to rent a Nikon Mirrorless with the newest firmware, get an adapter, invite some friends to do a photo shoot and see if the AF is good enough for you. If it works you can easily make the switch mid season and keep one of your dslr as backup. With the Canon R, you should be able to backup the jpeg files kind of realtime to your phone. Just sayin. But the big advantage with canon are the new lenses, but they are freaking expensive. Another point would be, depending on how many weddings do you shoot a year, just rent a backup body for a day?

That's a great suggestion (renting). I know it's not actually wasting money to rent a camera before buying it - because it helps make a smart purchasing decision - but emotionally it feels like any money not spent on the final gear itself is money wasted. I realize that's not a mature attitude. I also like the idea of renting as needed. Some of the emotional reaction comes in there too, but it would help with not making a major financial commitment until I'm sure of what I want to get.

Where will you make money, video or photo? Sounds like Canon is the winner because Nikon is under performing in video.

I very much agree about the video. I've since decided to stay with Nikon, even though I am getting into more video. I know it's not as good as Sony as Canon, but those two options have proved to be just too expensive for me to switch to
