Hi Daphne. I absolutely LOVED this video. I have been pondering the tower idea for awhile. I tend to work on larger paintings as well. I figured I would probably have to “pre-kit” before using the tower. I’m trying to think of how to explain this. I figured I would have to “kit up“ per usual then load the tower with the colors in the section I was going to be doing; usually a 4 x 6 replacement paper. Other than when I do exceptionally confetti, heavy areas, I can’t see how it would save me any more time. But it would be more convenient than opening one small container, pouring it in a tray, painting, pouring it back into the tray and replacing it. Only grabbing the colors I already had kitted up for that area.If that makes sense. It would be more convenient than faster, I would think. I have gotten to when I’m working on an exceptionally confetti heavy area I get a bunch of the trays out, pour the drills in it, then put it in front of or near the original container that has my sticker on it so I know what color it is. I will go through and grab the tray as I need it and then put it back in front of the original container so I know what color it is. If that makes any sense. It would just be a method of the drills are out, grab them, use them, put them back. I wouldn’t think it’s any quicker. It’s just more convenient. At least in my head it is. I am a visual learner, so I don’t explain things well lol. I don’t think you did anything wrong. I think using the tower is just a preferred method versus using your trays that are kitted up. That’s just my opinion. I don’t have anything scientific to prove it. I really do appreciate you taking the time to do this, film it, edited and post it. I’m sure this experiment took quite a long time. You put so much into your channel and I really do appreciate it. This was a fascinating experiment. ❤

Thanks for watching! I do get what you mean about ‘pre-kit’ as I essentially did the same. I do think it probably works better with confetti heavy canvases, so I will have to do some more testing!!
@ruthforget253 Жыл бұрын
I feel like the best way to truly test it would be to get 2 identical kits, and do the entire painting with each method. I feel like that is the truest test. I know that I did a huge unicorn painting for my granddaughter, and I would line up trays in front of me with the colours needed for each section I was working and I know that cut down on my time as I could just switch from tray to tray. I posted picture in the Facebook group,

I also feel like perhaps there would be greater time savings on a confetti heavy canvas, so I may go canvas hunting and see what I can find to test this out! Thanks for watching and sharing!!!

I bought my tower over a year ago and will say this. I only use it now for confetti heavy paintings. You didn't do anything wrong. I bought mine when I was struggling with a Dominic Davidson painting, and the tower was the only reason I finished that painting lol That being said I don't use it unless the painting is very confetti heavy. One thing I did do differently was I numbered my tower tray 1-60 with stickers that didn't fall off and I didn't have to switch out the stickers after each painting. You still will need your bottle case or EW storage for the colors that have a lot of drills. I don't recommend the tower for "normal" paintings if that makes sense. More for people that do landscape paintings. That's where most of the confetti is. My tower will only hold the bigger white trays, so I can't use my favorite trays in it. BUT after I bought mine I bought my husband the exact tower you have and the bigger white trays with the yellow stoppers and lids from Amazon. 4 trays are $13. He likes the tower, but he likes his "special" trays too. I have found over the last 14 months that I have had mine, I don't use it as much anymore because I work on more then one paining at a time. Imo the tower works great dor those that work on one landscape painting at a time. Thanks for testing this!!!

I have 2 towers and I use them all the time. Mine are filled with the large white trays with the orange stoppers and the other is filled with @bijoublissdesign Original size trays. These trays have magnetic covers and stoppers, and fit in the towers beautifully. I tend to do large diamond paintings, and I use the two towers along with the Elizabeth Ward storage. I do not put all my diamonds in the trays, only just enough to fill them, and then refill as I use them from the Elizabeth Ward storage. I have found that the tray towers save a ton of time with heavy confetti areas. Also, I have 4 cats. 😊 To keep them from knocking my towers over, I have put a bit of the Quake Putty on each corner. It keeps them solidly in place even when my cats rub their cheeks against them.

I use a hybrid of this method and pouring. I look at the area I am doing and tower the colors that have more area. If there is confetti, I tend to pour in extra trays and keep the drills in them for a bit in case I miss that one. It's also nice when I miss the stray color from the large areas. I still have overflow in containers, so I have to replenish the tower every once in awhile.

I have the very same tower system for my large bella trays. I too am very clumsy. So I placed those sticky mats under my tower to stabilize a bit more, so they do not slide anywhere. I bump that table probably a good 20 times each day. I have 100 Bella trays so mine are much taller then your tower. In the year plus I haven’t once knocked over or slid my tower off my table, even with all the other table bumps. Your regular method is what you are most familiar with. Give the tower method a little longer test, it does take a short learning curve to get the time saving. Place labels where you can easily grab the trays you need when you need them. I think I also prefer the Bella trays, as the lids slide out more easily, more then the cat proof. Just what has worked more easily for me. I’ve tried them all. I know I did do similar tests in the beginning. My test was 2 kits in similar in the same size & did end up finishing the one with the tower much faster, then I would using storage. I tested it for myself. That I finished the kit with the tower, where I only had the kit with the storage done to 3/4 in the same timeframe. (Both kits were similar in design & were the exact same size). Is it an investment absolutely. But a majority of my trays are the large Bella trays. I bought two of the towers that you have & attached them together (they come with a screw where they will double up). For the smalls I did invest in the smaller tower bella designed , as those now hold 24 smalls in a more compact version. I also have some 3 divider trays where I can work from three colors at one time. And I have Max trays & towers for the background colors that you tend to have a LOT of (like 310’s & such). But know that max tray is quite large, where it will hold up to three of the giant bags of drills. Hope this helps some. Good luck to you.

I have the same tower tray, I use the big white trays with the spout and the ones with the orange gate. I didn't have to remove any of the shelves, this way, I have 36 trays out, but they don't have lids. I used it for a lot of smaller paintings, but I tried one with a bigger painting, and because it had more colors, I still had to have extra trays and containers for leftovers. I could have bought a 2nd tower and trays, but I don't have room on my desk. I am thinking about investing in a roll around shelve that would hold up to 2 tower systems and can be pushed under my desk out of the way. I didn't do this to save time, though. I did it for convenience. Good luck with finding what you want. Thanks for sharing.

Wow. I’ve put about 200 drills down as a first time ‘painter’ and this exact idea burned in my brain. I guess I’m disappointed that you didn’t move faster, but I’m still hooked on the convenience. The tower method has got to be more convenient and (for me) less painful. I really did not enjoy the opening and opening of the little flip tops. I’m sure the little things are cheap and there are better choices, but I’m literally a total newb as of 5/7/23.🤪 I found Bella’s trays today and they look amazing…maybe if I’m fully in love I’ll start that investment. I have tried this method and I had pretty much the same results as you did. My biggest problem is that, like you, I do a lot of bigger paintings and the trays that fit in towers just don’t hold a lot of diamonds. I spent a lot of time refilling the trays and instead of saving time it took me longer. It was good when I only did those small cheap paintings from Amazon but it’s been a while since I’ve done anything but DAC and now all those towers I bought are sitting in a storage tote in my closet under the stairs. The diamond painting I’m working on now has a lot of confetti so I was thinking about getting them out again and then I watched this video and remembered all the reasons I stopped using them.

I tried a cheap foam tower with the smaller cheap trays. I’m a awful klutz too. I also found the labels didn’t stick. Then I thought about it and I would have to keep filling them if I worked from them. I could not kit to the trays and work from them as yet again klutz here. I found if you use the plastic tower with the large bottles in it where you can build up and out in draws it might save some time. Because you can build it you can save work space for large kits. I prefer the large squares 2” height but for massive paintings I would switch to the build a tower. Sturdy, saves space both for the drills and the unit itself. Expands for the amount you’re using. Pour from bottles to work tray as usual. Not a round lover because you have to screw and unscrew the tops instead of popping them but yep organized, inexpensive, space saving, oh! thought, “could the square fit in the plastic tower?” They don’t make them with square but I could sub. Pop instead of screw (“lids” for all you with a different mind set) and save time? Another trial? Thank you for this trial. I’m sorry but I was like “Oh my she didn’t measure the trays, especially with the tops as I new they wouldn’t fit. But wonderfully attentive and kind husband to provide such nice trays. Peace and love abide with you.💕

I ordered that tray tower to try it out. It doesn't work very well for most trays. The mosfa work ok. Bella's essential trays work with it too. I prefer the stamp pad holders because they are all the same size and tall enough to fit a thick tray. Sanfurney is the brand. More specifically- the 36 count one is the best. I used these until I was able to gradually build up my Bella tower collection. They are expensive so it takes time. You can easily sell off stuff in Dac Fans and get most of the money back. I am planning to destash all my storage. EW storage now holds my abs and specials. I like being able to see all the colors when blinging up. I am drowning in storage now that I never use anymore because I just kit up into Bella trays and keep buying more each week. I have to stop!

First I would like to say that I know this is only the first video to the other video but I wanted to share some advice that works for me. :) I still kit up in my round container bottles and my E.W. containers so those don't go to waist. I then pour (only what the tray is able to hold) the drills into the tray and label the tray. I do not however kit up every color. Because one, I don't have that many trays haha, but two I work in sections at a time well actually I work on the background of the image first, but because I do that I am able to use only the colors in that area in the trays, I hope that makes sense. and when I know that the color is gone or that I don't see it in the area that i'm working on I put it back into the bottle and put that tray back in its bottle and use it when I come across another color I know I will use a lot. I hoped that helped a little bit or made sense to you at all. but that's what works for me :)

@TxTwister6 Жыл бұрын
I've used both methods but have not tested for time savings. My thoughts were that the tower method would be more convenient for confetti heavy pieces. I'm using the tower method minus the tower right now because I'm using Bella trays and a mixture of sizes (small, large, 3 divider without the dividers and the max trays) I do like having the drills already in the trays but I just have them stacked on top of each other and pull as needed. The painting I'm doing with this method is the Filigree Stag. It's not confetti heavy imo and I do seem to be completing the sections pretty fast but I don't think it's due to the "tower tray method". I think it has more to do with just having the colors ready for that section handy and ready to go. I have a ton of trays and 12 Elizabeth Ward trays. I like seeing the colors in the Ward tray but I also like having the colors already in trays ready to go. Although I have a bunch of the max and large trays, I do find there's still not enough room to shake my drills to line up when it's a color that I have a lot of. So, when I'm working with that color, I just pull a large tray that is not dedicated to a color and just pour from the kitted up try and work that way. I will probably kit up my paintings using both methods depending on how I'm feeling for that painting. I think it ultimately comes down to preference and what you are comfortable working with. Without testing both methods independantly on two of the same paintings, one may never know if there's a time savings. Besides, it would be a lot of effort to truly test because there will be interruptions like potty breaks, phone calls, taking a sip of your drink, etc. I do have a few paintings that I have multiples of and maybe if I think about it when doing them I will focus to see which is faster but it won't be anytime soon. It would also stress me out to get an accurate test done lol. Ultimately, if I had to choose one method to use, it would be the Elizabeth Ward trays because of space savings. But I will probably switch between the methods or even do a combo depending on the painting I'm doing and what I feel like utilizing at the time of kitting up.
@TxTwister6 Жыл бұрын

This was interesting. I was wondering if you used the long Bella Art De Nicole trays so that there is a larger surface area for the drills, would the time drop? Also maybe the colour of the trays for familiarity i.e. yellow trays for areas of yellow, green for green areas etc. Just a thought. Maybe you paint faster than you think. I paint for enjoyment so time spent isn’t important but for a busy person such as yourself I can see how saving time would be important I hope you solve your dilemma. You would notice the time savings with further testing. A couple sections is not enough to show the difference. I noticed when I was finishing entire paintings with 2-6 hour differences when compared to another painting of the same size and shape. Degree of confettiness determines how much faster the towers work out to be. We all speed up the further into a painting we go. Also you want to work with trays that are easy to open and close. Cat proof requires 2 hands and will slow you down. No lids is the ideal setup honestly but I understand your worries about knocking it over by accident. As for kitting up and trays being too full ---what I do is I use two small trays per big bag. So I pour the excess into the back up tray of the same color. Hence my continued obsession to buy new colors in sets two small and 1 large per set. I am either kitting up into all large trays or all smaller trays depending on the kit.

I am severely ADHD, you the tower method or multiple trays at the same time would cause my anxiety to reach 100%. The canvas I am working on Dreamer Designs Butterfly Orchid Fantasy is very heavy confetti. I use one tray, and single place either an entire symbol, number or letter. I go quite fast. Why don't you have your craft desk against a wall? Here in Southern California I would not think of not having anything against a wall. Anyway, do what makes you happy. Have a wonderful day.

The amount of money and space needed always put me off Also let's not forget the risks. I have been using craft mate for years and for me works best. I do not work from the canvass. I hold the tray in my hand and put those colors down. Then pick up the next 7 colors. I will only put it in a tray when multiplacing. I am very fast using this method.

Please don't be offended at me, but what's the hurry? Relax and enjoy the process.
