Central Asian Shephers have their ears and tails cropped to protect them from being torn off by predators. It's very rare to see an un-cropped CAS, as most people do not own them unless they are being worked as guardians. Whatever your stance on the matter, this is purely an explanation of why they are cropped, not whether or not it's ethical.

It's amazing how genetically healthy old working breeds of dogs are. In my home country Iran, we have a huge native shepherd breed called Sarabi, which can easily live up to 16-17 years old. I wish more and more breeders focused on health of the dogs and strived to revive the classical look of the working breeds, such as German shepherd, chow chow, bulldog, etc, which were all much healthier than their contemporary counterparts.

It is so nice to hear about breeds that never normally get mentioned. I have a huge soft spot for working breeds, especially if they're allowed to work! I'm going to look your breed up in a minute. :) I have had greyhounds for over 30 years. Most were racers before I got them. They're a very misunderstood breed. The last time I checked the world record age for one, it was about 17½ years. I've had them up to 14 but then lost them to illness, though our first two went to separate, freak accidents. One badly broke her hind leg after turning in a ploughed field to chase a rabbit - still on the leash! Unfortunately, she had arthritis in her hips and shoulders and taking off the leg - it was unfixable - was not an option. She was my soul dog, but her eyes told me she was ready to go because of the pain. It was nearly 30 years ago and thinking of that moment has just reduced me to a sobbing wreck. She was 13, our others were 12-14. Okay, taken a deep breath! Generally speaking, they're actually really genetically healthy for a pedigree dog. They've been around for thousands of years with only a little bit of interference back in the early Middle Ages, to make them a bit stronger for hunting deer. Even now, some are very slender and petite while others are wider and more muscular. Our two fastest ever dogs (based on their racing records) were the slender type. We still have one of them now. He'll be our last dog as both my husband and I are physically disabled and getting worse over time. Fortunately, Buddy is really good at walking next to a mobility scooter! People don't realise how heavy they are! Anything between about 33-38 kg, even a bit more. "Racing weight" can be seen when they stand up. If you can see the last three ribs at the back, they're there. They shouldn't be any thinner - nor fatter if they're working. House dogs, i.e. when they retire, spend their lives on their own sofas. You might not have bought them one, but you'll get kicked off the most comfortable one 🤣. (I know of dogs who "retired themselves", including the brother of my other fast one, who decided to trot out of the trap in his final race - his retirement was already being planned - and while the race went on he jogged a lap of honour! 😂 Went to live with a vet above a fish & chip shop. A very happy boy!) Sorry, I'm talking about my favourite subject (maybe my second favourite, but I won't start on my grandchildren!), I get carried away. I'm going to do an image search on the Sarabi! Thanks for introducing them to me!

Wow! How gorgeous they are! I was scrolling down thinking they looked a bit like a mastiff and one was titled the Sarabi Mastiff. You're so lucky to have such a stunning dog virtually to yourselves! But they shouldn't spread around the world, they'll be misunderstood and not get the right owners. They need a strong alpha, I'll bet. Again, thank you!

Yeah ectropion and cherry eye are conditions that are on the rise in breeds like central asian shepherds and caucasian shepherds. The breeds are not man made so the dogs have a variety of colors, coats, head shapes, and sizes. When trying to standardize the breed saint bernard was used. Hence how ectropion is now in the breed. Both the caucasian and central asian shepherd were standardized in the USSR'S red star kennel.

Thanks for mentioning about the ears. I thought cropping might be likely, because of the job. Very unusual for such a long life span.

They were cropped for working purposes. He’s a live stock guardian and it protects them from predators

I had to google about the ears. The Central Asian Shepherd is a livestock guardian / working dog, whose ears are cropped close to the head and whose tails are docked in a bob. Livestock guardian breeds are at risk for attack by the likes of coyotes, wolves, foxes, badgers, or other vermin dependent on locality. Ears and tails are easy targets for predators as they try to neutralize a livestock guardian dog and feast on the flock.

Since they were originally used as guard dogs as a matter of course they have their ears cropped and tails docked.

@Susan Rosales I see. Still seems cruel. Is this particular dog a livestock guardian?

@@counselthyself2591 people own all types of “working dogs” that aren’t actually working. Many Shepards breeds are working dogs as well and don’t have their ears docked like Australian shepherds, German shepherd and they don’t have their ears docked. It’s an excuse to cut ears for aesthetic reasons.
