My father is a musician he is the one who got me into art and music, he told me that art and music is an melody that goes great together, as art is like a musical tune in the work of a painting breaking it down into a single note of each part in it's base. So finally seeing the music theory play apart in art makes me really happy, i been needing to improve my anatomy just haven't gotten around to it.

I am new to your channel and I have been drawing since I was 10, I’m almost 35. I have taught myself a lot, I have taken many, many classes and am a decent artist in my personal opinion, however, there is still a lot of learning in my future. I have never had anyone teach the way you do in your videos. They are informative and interesting and make soooo much sense. I am grateful to everyone that has taught me and I have learned a lot but I wish I had someone like you teaching me when I was growing up because the way you explain things and show things creates these connections in my brain that as someone whose been drawing for almost 25 years I NEVER put together myself and it was only after you pointed them out that the lightbulb turned on. Thank you for inspiring artists new and old. You’re incredible.

I have learned that tempo is an important part of a dynamic drawing. Funny that tempo is all about music theory, but it also has to do with the relaxation of the movement of the pencil with the hand, dance as if you’re confident, the movement is better felt with more relaxed tempo

I'm happy I popped in here, thank you for sharing this idea! I'd like to riff off of you for a second here: While it's important to have your fundamentals and your style choices to make your art, there are some other things about music that you can apply to help improve yourself. Iteration: Writing a song doesn't happen in one go, it takes many passes! Don't be afraid to erase parts of what you've drawn or even the whole thing, and draw it over. Also recognize when you don't like how something looks. If you're aware that you don't like something about it, you have the power to move that line or fix that shadow and adjust your art to your taste. Distance: It's easy to lose yourself in the process of writing music or creating art. But it's absolutely crucial that you pay attention to yourself and give yourself breaks. This'll allow you to step away from it and return some time later with fresh eyes on the piece. Improvisation: After the fundamentals of a track are laid down, allow yourself the space to let yourself flow and add layers on top of those fundamental chunks. A good guitar solo over a track doesn't happen by looking at the theory and constructing it "logically"; it happens when you allow yourself to play! After your base is laid down, let your hands go crazy, find new ways to add style into your line work, into your paint strokes, just have fun and let it be. Sharing: All of the greatest music artists had people they trust that they'd share their craft with, like fellow musicians, friends, and family. Share your art with someone! It's rewarding to share, and even more rewarding if you share and they manage to point out some areas to work on if you're asking them for a critique. Finally, realize there's always going to be something to fix or add. Forget about thinking of "when it's done" and just recognize when you feel you should move on, and do that proudly. You'll go on to create more and better things as you go and you'll have so much to show for.

You put into words what I discovered about a year ago. At the time I was looking to break out towards professional art. But I found my figures looked stiff. So I started looking for "the way" to do it. I used Mike Mattesi's FORCE method. But then it all looked like jello people. Then I learned the contemporary envelope method, where you "cut out" the form like unwrapping an envelope. But then it looked too stiff again. Then I went back to basic construction. Thought maybe that's what's lacking. Nah, same problem. And finally, after trying different methods that were meant to be "the one", I came to the conclusion I really just need to use all of them to actually get a complete and satisfying figure drawing. Start off by finding the location of the figure on the canvas with the envelope, draw out the gesture lines to get the energy in there, then construct ontop of it, whilst exaggerating where you need to to add more dynamism and that's where style itself comes from. And you can do all of this in any order. Hell, you don't even need to follow my structure or anyone's structure for that matter. What's important is that you don't pigeonhole yourself into thinking one technique is better than the rest. They all come together to make a whole. And if there's anything anyone takes away from this comment, it's: Don't think of gesture and construction as individual things that are incompatible. You need both. You can add any manner of set dressing on them. But those two are integral towards making a figure that both makes sense and looks alive! Great video, subbed!

I'm 48, went to school for graphic design, worked as a comic book illustrator for indies in 90s, some animation work (storyboards) even being mentored by the likes of Peter Chung. 2 years ago I learned I have had ADHD (combined subtypes AKA the worst kind) all my life, why I sucked at times, failed at times, and have discovered a LOT about how I, "art". One thing to mention here is that a huge portion of the art community is neurodivergent. A word on that learning format: We don't possess working memory, or daily functional memory which partially explains why we forget things so quickly. (Getting progressively worse as we get older. Especially those who are untreated.) Memorization is really the only way and practicing in the traditional sense doesn't always work. Along with memorizing, we need to apply it. If just sketching as practicing doesn't help much then creating and completing projects can. (Doing both will be beneficial too.) There is a scientific approach that will really show our particular mechanism in action: The Testing Effect or Jason Brubaker's Cognitive Drawing. Observe the reference for a few seconds, cover it, draw it, check it, draw it while looking at the reference, cover it, draw again, rinse and repeat. (Basically) We must also keep our pride in check and accept the fact that almost all of us will not be able to draw in a way that doesn't feel like "cheating" to our brains that have been brought up in the neurotypical way. (WHY CAN'T I JUST DO IT "RIGHT" LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE!?!) Maybe you can't use pencil and paper, only digital. Maybe your style has to be even more unorthodox...I discovered that ADHD people may also have to use "backwards thinking" or "backwards design". Ever wonder why you feel the need to ask so many questions, and cling to an instructor to the point that you have this wild thought: If they would show me their work or some blueprint--I could understand! That's it!! You are feeling the need to see it done and MEMORIZE the process...you need the answer first and then work BACKWARDS! Why do you think we can understand music so well??? We are hearing FINISHED pieces first, then we are learning the notes, chords, scales, time signatures, counting bars and beats etc. (Can you tell I know music too? Lol.) So with art we can fall into that DANGEROUS WORLD of the career STUDENT! Always watching videos, looking for books, taking classes, because we don't understand the way we learn. Most of us fall there--I mean, we are basically the bread and butter for ArtTubers and Udemy. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Back in the day, there were so many print ads and tv commercials (70s-90s) for trades and you could receive "on the job (hands on) training." A lot of us can excell in these trades (electrician, construction, plumbing et. al because we can learn the way they teach it!) So, my method: Personally, I draw digital. At this age, with all the ADHD induced medical issues because you forget appointments and procrastinate...! I have Carpal Tunnel and severe neuropathy. My meds have worn off so typing this is like wearing lava gloves so you better be thankful! When I draw, comics mainly, US styles (¯\_(ツ)_/¯), I will go with a sort of shapes, and gesture method that won't look done to any of you and then I start to ink. What that looks like, is using the selection tool a lot and making the shadow shapes and and some of the contour line shapes. I keep the energy, while trusting my experience, and utilizing the digital tools for corrections. Always use reference, neurodivergent, or not...and I ask for criticism! Body doubling may also be a necessary motivational and progress tool--more often than not. We usually run in packs without realizing it LOL so making a group to work together will help tremendously. Also, make a list of other current projects/development task or interests, no more than 4 or 5 and switch when you feel that distractive pull. cycle and come back. Uh, did I miss anything? Probably. Hope this helps. AMA.
