Welcome to Standing Stone Kennels! In this video we talk about retrieving drills you can do with your bird dog or gun dog to help them mark at longer distances. It is pretty common to play fetch with your dog in the back yard or field and that can make dogs become conditioned to the distance we can throw bumpers. Utilizing this retrieving drill with your dog can improve the distance they can reliably mark downed birds for this fall! Follow along to watch Maverick and Thunder work though this simple retrieving drill and how we help handle them. Make sure to throw a comment down below and let us know how you and your dog do.

Spray your clothes with permethrin to prevent ticks in the field. We use it on our clothes when we go in the field and when we go out backpacking. Works great for tick prevention. You can pick it up at Walmart in the camping section

Just want to add for those that don’t know - if you have cats, it’s extremely toxic to them. So keep your field clothes out of reach of cats, preferably in another room entirely that they can’t access.

Great video, especially when you are using "hot", fired up dogs. I'm in the middle of training my 8 month old Drahthaar to retrieve. She has lost a bit of confidence recently both in going out for the retrieve (so hunting short or stopping and looking back) and also delivering to hand. Some are placed gently in the hand others are dropped just at my feet. I will be giving this drill a try to get her out further and more confidently! Thanks.

Perhaps if you start with marks where you are standing with the wind directly at your back, he has no crosswind to fade with. Then after he learns to mark with the wind at his back and he runs straight to his marks, you can start introducing cross-wind marking.

I call BS. Excepting constructive feedback helps us grow. Knowing you do not, "know it all" and others have something to offer is ideal.

Great video👍 I've seen some trainers use a hedge row or fence to keep a dog on a straight path. Even seen tall grass cut to make a path.What do you think?

Just brain storming, would it help if you have access to a straight running dog, to run them together? Adding in the competition of getting there first as well as preventing them from breaking down to soon?

When the dog is on the line, you should make sure he is sitting in a straight line. The line should be from the base of his tail ,up through this spine, and then directly to the area of the fall. If you line him up left or right of the fall, they will tend to run right or left of the mark. Precision at the line helps the dog.

Do you think using a dogs name for a release can be confusing for a dog?
@scotthaller7268
@scotthaller7268 3 жыл бұрын
That is the traditional way Retrievers have been sent for marks. Blinds are sent using “back” (usually queue a Blind first using “dead” or “dead bird”). It’s worked for years and the dogs understand the difference.

Idk. I honestly would appreciate if he 💯 stopped talking to the camera and properly calmed the dog down and then continued with what he was saying. The most important thing is not, "us" the youtube viewers, it's the dog. That is what makes Ceasar such a success, he stops everything and gives the dog 💯 and then continues what he was saying. People long for that attention and seeing someone give 💯 attention to a dog and the pay off makes them want to do better. Still with that said, I mostly enjoy this channel, voice good, sound quilty good, video quality good, shows concerns for dogs well being, seems organized, definently actually uplands, good catch phrase.

These dogs should not be bred to with the amount of noise they make, huge fault for a gundog...! it is Hereditary genrerally but the training exercises you are using is renforcing it, you even say good job when on the release him. You need to go back to basics and not be doing these huge long retrieves. It is making the dog nuts. Man, you will never get this noise out of the dog now.....

Good feedback based on person experience. Over time we will see if it holds water with these pups.
