I actually think the voice acting for both Dracula and Death are actually quite decent especially for the time. It was everyone else that has that awkward ps1 bad voice delivery. I do miss the comedic tone of it though, it's an era that'll never be relived again.

It's basically like if they redubbed the original silent hill or resident evil, the chances outright replacing the comical nostalgia pisses people off. It's the same with the silent hill hd collection, I prefer the newer voice acting as I think the whole theory before of the acting being deliberately bad or awkward is genuinely some form of coping mechanism.

There's also the fact Max is notoriously bad at puzzles. XD But yeah, considering how the wording on the Gold and Silver Rings are and they weirdly have "..." twice in their description along with them being the only ones to point out the "inscription" part, the only way I feel like anyone comes to the conclusion of not figuring the puzzle out is assuming that there are other rings in the game that also are like "Inscription: (insert words here)". I feel like the only way to make it even more clear for people is by having the two rings have a clock and goat head design to better point to the big clock face, where the goat ring has the "clock" description, and the clock ring has the "tower" description.

THE ANSWER is YES 53:43 Technically yes, there are 3 places left to explore on that map, but they are not visible with the eye. 1º In the coliseum there is a roof missing to break that gives you the holy sword 2º Just above the map is the hallway that connects the Olrox area with the Chapel, in the hallway that looks like a marble bridge the ceiling breaks and the invocation "Sword familiar" is found. 3º In the Underground Caverns area on the way to kill the Scylla you will see an ice floor, it is breakable, it gives you access to another session with the boatman to get the "Holy Symbol" relic. The water does not hurt you. 4º the secret stairs on the top of the castle, at the entrance before Fight Richter, the secret switch on the stone 1:01:41 -> check the switch on the stone and as an Extra, I add a 5th place that is not accessible unless you use a glicht, that is, at the entrance of the castle under the clearly visible slab, you can access the entrance to an area that was never added for the Psx version, only for sega saturn (Underground Garden), after using that glitch you will enter 2 small rooms, one that descends and gives access to a save point, there is nothing else, after doing this, the slab at the entrance will be uncovered forever, leaving you freely access that blocked area in Psx that leads nowhere since the "Underground Garden" area does not exist in PSX.

I booted up my PS4 for the 1st tine in nearly 2 yrs to plat SotN after watching your playthru. Now you've finished, a few tips for NG+...... 1. Learn the SOUL STEAL spell. Heals you AND weakens enemies. Uses lots of MP but worth it. 2. The Faerie companion is the best one. She'll point out odd walls & use healing & status items from your inventory if things go south. 3. Certain items have situational uses even if they appear weaker. The Mirror Mail is great in rooms with gold Medusas. The AlucarT item set drastically increases your Luck; good for farming rare drops. Experimentation is key. 4. The library in the Inverted Castle is home to two of the rarest & most powerful weapons in the game. Farm the floating grey heads & the Lion sentries to get them. Luck stat of 50 ir higher is advisable. 5. Try starting a new game & typing RICHTER as your name for a more traditional Castlevania experience.........

The riddle of the two rings is pretty deceiving: Wear-in-Clock-Tower. But that looks to me more like a "clock room" than a "clock tower", even looking at the geography of the map. I guess there was some mistranlation there.

Yeah, I assumed the clock tower was the one with the clockwork gears. The best part of the whole gold/silver ring sidequest is that Maria could have just decided to wait around for you right in front of the room with Richter. Instead she chose to hide in the most difficult to reach part of the castle. It's like she wanted you to kill him.

You had some really cool weapons, I don't think I've ever come across the Chakram in like 15 playthroughs, or I didn't even notice it was not a 1 time use. You missed three of the coolest though. Obviously Crissaegrim, but that's more gamebreaking and less awesome. Sword of Dawn can be found in a wall in reverse castle near where the double jump was originally, it lets you summon all kinds of skeletons which is useless but cool. And then there's the Rune Sword which drops off the Dodo Bird in the reverse castle entrance, which just throws a huge sword in front of you. Also you missed the Sword Familiar which levels up and becomes a sentient death machine. It's hidden in a ceiling in one of the passages to the left of Olrox's Quarters. And obviously the entire Richter mode which becomes available after first clearing it. So if you'd want to go back, there's even more content to find.

AWW i'm so sad he went RIGHT PAST Dawnbreaker Sword as he was exploring the first area of the upside down castle! It's so useful and fun! Literally flew past it in the bat! I'm also glad no one in chat told him that Schmoo drops the best weapon in the entire game, so he could keep the experience pure. The sword Schmoo drops trivializes the entire game if used, bosses dying in mere seconds.

This game is a classic. Its influence is undeniable, having laid much of the groundwork for the metroidvania genre. The soundtrack is masterful. The graphics are beautiful. The amount of love poured into it by the devs is insane, with tiny little details everywhere. It is also FLAWED as all hell. It is also also NOT the best metroidvania-style game in the series. Circle of the Moon is better. Aria of Sorrow is better. Dawn of Sorrow is better. Portrait of Ruin is better. Order of Ecclesia is better, and in my opinion the absolute best game in the series. All of these are criminally overlooked and underrated, and it is a damn shame that all of them are stuck in the shadow of Symphony of the Night.

Circle of the Moon is plain terrible, one of the worst Igavanias, but I could agree with the other ones (though I haven't really completed Dawn and Ecclesia), but in the end I love SotN too much to budge it's position in my list.

9:20 Yes, it's luck. If during the first fight with Dracula you defeat him without taking damage and without using any of the secondary weapons like the cross, your stats with Alucard will be higher.

Every single moment of Max in the Clock Towers is pure gold. Cackling like a demon over here. Also, I knew the chat would try to spoil Max on the Crissaegrim as soon as the Schmoo showed up. We all know about it, but imo, it shouldn't be known about till a second playthrough. It's handy if you genuinely need it, but it trivializes any challenge the game could have once you get it, I think.

Good to see that you enjoyed the game by the end. I can't deny there are some biases at play when I think about this game. As the Super Metroid comparison was brought up (Fairly so, given that the two are what defines Metroidvanias to this day), I'd say I'm on the other side of the coin with Max. I enjoy both games greatly, but find myself preferring Symphony over Super Metroid. Everything Max brought up at the end was absolutely correct. The game is pretty aggressive with backtracking and the game lacks really reliably good sources of uninterrupted mobility. Not to mention, with the way the game has been sliced into 3 variations between PS1, Sega Saturn and PSP, The missing content can be felt pretty bad and it's among those games that desparately needs a definitive remaster with everything included. However, the reason I prefer it to SM comes down to just the fundamentals. I enjoy the Castlevania slant of Metroidvania over Metroid's own brand. Metroid is like a maze, where there is a straight line from point A to B, but hides the path forward with winding paths. Castlevania is like a labyrinth. It's a sprawling mess of inter-connected hallways and your exploring to get to it's center. While the more open-ended design of Castlevanias will lead to alot of issues like backtracking and brain-rot trying to keep all the paths clear in your head, it also allows freedom to take the game at your pace and feels rewarding on future playthroughs, when you can optimize your route for a more smooth experience. Metroid does have that, but usually it's for upgrades over progresion, with some exceptions. More importantly though, Symphony of the Night's game-feel and controls feel alot better to me. This is a problem specifically with Super Metroid for me, I just can't vibe with it's controls as much. They feel really loose and hyperactive. Your run-speed and knockback feels way too extreme for the cramped corridors, tech like wall-climbing and shine-sparking felt cumbersome to me and the gunplay didn't have that crunch I want. Symphony of the Night feels like a dream to play. The swordplay feels crunchy, I like performing tricks like dash-cancels and dropkick shenanigans and I always enjoyed how the equipment and spells gave you alot to discover and experiment with. There are some spots, where it does falter like the bat's airdash and repeated gravity jumps. In comparison though, I rarely ever have a moment, where the controls feel like they're fighting with me, whereas in Super Metroid, I'll get that on occasion. Then again, I suppose it's not the fairest comparison between series, given that Super Metroid isn't even my favorite Metroid game. If I compared Symphony to Zero Mission, the odds would be closer and my vote towards Symphony would be given for more reasons of aesthetic and thematic over any gameplay advantage.

the strongest weapon is the Alucard Shield hands down the second and favored best weapon of all is Crissaegrim (or Valmanway) a drop item Alucard Sword is holy elemental as I remember, hence it has more consistent better match ups than Osafune, while the Masamune and Yasutsuna, 2 drop items are better than Osafune but technically speaking Muramasa dunks on them all since you can increase its attack to the max, just that it is slow

If you or anyone here has a chance the YT channel for Double Fine (Psychonauts/Brutal Legend) has a series where they play games with the people who worked on them and there is a 2+ hr video of them playing this with IGA and he tells cool stories about the game how at one point 6 people worked on the game and there was at one point a customizable bedroom for Alucard.

Using the high jump under the librarian will give you items randomly as long as you dont make him hit the ceiling. Repeat jumps without touching the floor or ceiling will yield you Dracula's Tunic (strong armor but Gods Garb you gain from Guardians is the strongest) and the other item he'll drop is the Axe Armor which morphs you into the classic Axe Lord enemy complete with minuscule jump height and funny hurt animations
